To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM ZUOKERMAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York city, borough of Bronx, in the county of Bronx and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Envelop, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to mailing envelops, and the object thereof is to provide a simple and inexpensive envelop which will afford an easy inspection of its contents by the postal authorities and which will prevent the contents thereof from falling out during the transportation of the same in the mail. I

The invention is characterized by an envelop blank having slits so related that the interengaging slit parts are adapted to interlock.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of the specification, in which like characters indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure l is a rear elevation of my envelop, with the closing flap raised, the same being shown partly in section to illustrate the details of construction; Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the envelop closed to prevent the contents thereof from dropping out; Fig. 3 is a horizontal section through the envelop illustrating the portion of the flap within the envelop as the flap is pushed through the slot in the rear; and Fig. 4 is a similar section showing the engagement of the flap with the rear of the envelop when a pull is exerted on the flap to extract the same from the slot.

Before proceeding to a more detailed de scription of my invention, it may be remarked that the blank used for my envelop is substantially the same as that used for ordinary envelops, but it differs from the ordinary blank in that While the blank is cut out, slits and slots are cut in the flaps of the envelop.

Referring to the drawings, the closing flap 5 of the envelop is provided with slits 6 which will coincide with the inner seams of the envelop formed by the edges 7 of the side flaps 8 when said closing flap is folded over the rear of the envelop (see Figs. 2 and 3). the end is partly obstructed by the said side flaps, as clearly shown in the drawings; but the side flaps and rear flap are not gummed together about the slot, so that the end of the closing flap can pass between the lower and side flaps. The length of the slot 10 is substantially equal to the distance be tween the slits 6 at the edges of the closing flap 5, that is to say, the distance a-a is equal to the distance 6 The closing flap 5 is also provided with a notch 11 in each of the slits 6 between the ends thereof. The notches 11 form a tongue 12 at each edge of the closing flap, which is bound to come in engagement with the edges of the side flaps 8 when a pull is exerted on the closing flap after the end thereof has been inserted through the slot 10. The engagement of the tongues 12 with the edges forces the tongues to move toward the front of the envelop. They cannot move toward the lower flap, being prevented by the engagement of the lower flap with the side flaps. This movement of the tongues toward the front brings the notches 11 into engagement with the edges 7 of the side flaps and thereby locks the closing flap in the slot 10, as clearly shown in Fig. 4.

The tendency of the tongues 12 to move toward the front is further accentuated by the gum which is supplied to the edge of the closing flap, which gum tends to curl up the said tongues 12. The reason for providing the closing flap 5 with gum is to permit the use of the envelop as a firstclass mailing envelop if desired.

I claim:

1. In an envelop, a closing flap having slits at the edges transversely thereof, said slits converging toward each other, the portion of the flap between the slits having a notch at each slit, whereby said portion presents a tongue at the edge in each slit; side flaps; and a lower flap secured to the side flaps so that a portion of said side flaps is below the lower flap, said lower flap having a slot extending over the edges of the side flaps covered by the lower flap, the length of the slot being substantially equal to the distance between the slits at the edges of the closing flap, said slits be ing adapted to coincide with the edges of the side flap under the lower flap when the portion of the closing flap between the slits is engaged into the envelop through the slot,

said notches being adapted to engage the edges of the side flaps at the slot when a pull is exerted on the closing flap.

2. In an envelop, securing flaps presenting inner edges at the back of the envelop, and a closing flap having slits at the edges transversely of the edges, said slits converging toward each other, the portion of the closing flap between the slits having a notch at each slit whereby said portion presents a tongue at the edge in each slit, said envelop having a slot in the back thereof for receiving the portion of the closing flap between the slits, said slits being adapted to coincide with the inner edges of the envelop when said closing flap portion between the slits is introduced into the envelop through the slot, the notches in said closing flap portion being adapted to engage thesaid inner edges at the slit in the back of the envelop when a pull is exerted on the closing flap after said closing flap por tion has been inserted into the envelop.
