. DOOR-BUFFER.

Be it known that I, DOCTOR FRANKLIN OLIVER, a citizen of the United States, and a' resident of Oakland, in the county of Alameda and State of Oalifornia', have invented a new. andlmproved Door-Bufier, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved door buffer which is very simple and durable in construction, easily attached. to the door and wholly independent of the door lock, the door buffer being arrangedto permit the door to close gently on slamming the door thus preventing injury to'the door and door casing and reducing the shock incldent to the slamming of the door to a minimum.
In order to accomplish the desired result use is made of a brake mechanism, an oscil-' lating member, and means for actuating the said mechanism by the'said oscillating member on slamming the door, the said oscillating member oscillating free of the brake mechanism on closing the door with ordi-.
'- nary force.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

The casing A of the door buffer is let in and fastened to the top rail of the door B,
' as plainly shown in the drawings, and on the casing A is held a vertically disposed pivot C on which is mounted to swing an actuating member D, preferably of L shape and having its forward end extending into -an opening A in the front plate of the easing A (see Figs. 1, 2 and 3). The forward end of the actuating member D is adapted to be engaged by a striking pin'E arrangedon the plate E secured to the'headjamb of the door casing B, as plainly indicated in Fig. 1. It will be noticed that when'the door is D is swung inwardly in the direction closed the free end of the actuating member of. the arrow a (see Figs. 3 and 5). V
On the pivot pin O is mounted to swing and to slide a movable brake member F operating in conjunction with a segmental brake member G fixed'in the casing A. The movable brake member F is preferably of U shape, thefactuating member D, andthe free ends F of the movable brake imember F are beveled (see Fig. 4) and adapted to movein frictional contact withthe beveled side edges G ofthe segmental faceof the fiXed brake member G. Normally the movablebrake member F hasits beveled edges F free of the beveled edges G of the fixed member G, but when the door is slammed the movable brake memberF is caused to slide radially and between its'side bars oscillates,
as hereinafter more fully describedto 'engage the beveled edges F with the beveled edges G. elongated slots F formed in the side bars of the movable brake member F'to allow the latter to slide in a radial direction. On the sidebars of the movable brake member F is secured apin H extending through a slot D formed in the forward end of the actuating member D, and the said pinI-I is pressed on by one end of a spring I held in the slot D and seated'at the forward end thereof, the spring having its outer portion coiled around a pin J attached to the free endfof the actuating member D. By the arrangement described the spring I is held in place in the slot D to press at all times against the pin'I-I. A spring K is connected at one end with the pivotal end ofthe actuating member D and the other end of the spring is attached to the fixed brake member G so as to hold the actuating member D normally in a forward position, as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3. 7 1

A door buffer provided with a fixed segmental brake member having beveled sides, an approximately U-shaped movable brake member mounted to swing and to slide radially, the free ends of the said movable brake member being 7 beveled and adapted to engage the beveled edges of the said fixed brake member, and actuating means connected with the said movable brake member to impart a swinging motion thereto on gently closing the door and to impart a swinging and sliding motion to the said movable brake member to frictionally engage the latter with the said fixed brake member on slamming the door.
