When the throttle valve closed, and the steam therefor shut oli 'from the engine, the parts will be in the position shown in full lines in Fig. 1. lhen the throttle is opened ,steam will be admitted tl'irough the pipe 34 `to the lower side of the piston 30 forcing the' same. upwardly thereby oscillating the arm 2 6 and the shaft 23 to open the damper 22. As soon as the throttle valve is closed the piston will be forced tonormal position by means of gravity of the counterweighted arm 26 and the damper lclosed. This damperwill shut oft the flow of furnace lgases through the enlarged tubes and preventthe heat from otherwise injuring the superheater elements located therein. l
From the above description it Will be seen that the automatic control is reduced to the simplest form and to the minimum number of parts.
