Be it known that I, EDWIN J. Amps, a citizen of the United States, and a resldent of Moundsville in thecounti of Marshall and State of west Virginia, a've invented a new and Im roved-Superheater, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact descri tion.

The detail construction of the cylinders, engines, and frame 1,. may be of any form, as the samelform no part of the present invention being shown to display the, advantages of the superheater forming the invention.
Mounted on the'frame 1 is a boiler 7 having a fire\box 81- of any usual or preferred kind. The smoke stack 10 is provided with a cover 11 pivotally mounted so as to be operated by a rod 12. The smoke stack merges into and forms part of a superheater housing 13 which extends preferably for the full length of the boiler 'Z' and is provided with an auxiliary stack 14. The stack 14 has associated therewith a pivotally 10 mounted cover 15 designed to be operated by a rod or link 16. The lower part of the housin 13 may be secured directly to the boiler as shown in Fig. 3, or may be bent around and connected together so as to de- 15 fine an independent housing or tube. From the construction just described it will be seen that the smoke and hot products of combustion may pass out stack 10 when the lid or cover 11 is open, but when the lid or cover is closed the smoke and hot products of combustion will pass out stack 14, the
cover thereof being, of course, held open.
In traction enginesit is often found necessary to transport the same over roads or other places having a greater or less amount of grades so that special means must be provided for directing the steam to the cylinders of the engine. According to the present arrangement a dome 17 is provided which is connected by suitable pipes 18 and 19 to the opposite ends of the boiler 7 so that if one of the pipes is covered with water the other pipe will be feeding steam to the dome and thus maintain a proper pressure in the dome from which the steam is directed to the engine. One end of the dome is closed, while the other end is provided with an aperture designed to receive pipe 20, which pipe projects to a central point in the dome but does not fit snugly the dome so that there is ample space around pipe 20 for steam from pipe 16 to enter the dome By this construction and arrangement a substantially even pressure of steam is provided for pipe 20 which has connected therewith a superheating pipe 21 coiled around dome 17 and finally connected with the discharge pipe 22 connected with the steam chest of cylinder 5. After the'steam from pipe 22 has been utilized in the high pressure cylinder 5, the same isexhausted into pipe 23 and from thence it is discharged into a coiled pipe 24 which is arranged in housing 13 so that the exhaust steam is thus superheated or again raised in temperature.
The steam from coil 24 passes into a discharge pipe 25, and discharge pipe 25 leads to the low pressure cylinder 6. The exhaust from low pressure cylinder 6 may be directed to the atmosphere or to either of the smoke stacks, as desired, for assisting the draft.
In starting there is of course no steam in the pipe 25, or at least there is only a small amount of steam even after the cylinder 5 27 carriesa puppet valve 28 designed to be I set so as to be opened at any desired pressure. The puppet valve 28 could be, for instance, set so as to close when the pressure in pipe 25 was half that in pipe 20. If the puppet valve was set for operating in this manner the low pressure cylinder would be provided with live steam at the time of starting with the pressure half that of the high pressure cylinder so that substantially a maximum impulse is provided at the starting. As the high pressure cylinder exhausts into the coil 24 the amount of live steam supplied to pipe 25 will be gradually diminished until there is substantially no live steam supplied and thus a minimum amount of steam will be used while a maximum result will be obtained.
When first starting the fire the cover 11 is raised and cover 15 is closed so that a direct draft will be provided. After the fire has'been properly started the cover 11 is closed and the cover 15 opened so that the draft will be through the housing 13. After the proper amount of steam has been raised and it 1s designed to startthe engine, the manually operated valve 29 is opened so as to allow the live steam to pass through the puppet valve 28 into the pipe 25. After. this has been done the steam is turned on to the cylinders 5 and 6 in any desired way and live steam will be utilized in both cylinders until the exhaust from the high pressure cylinder 5 will be suflicient for supplying the low pressure cylinder 6 with steam. When this occurs the valve 28 automatically closes under .the pressure of the steam. If desired, the valve 29 could be closed also. In connection with these superheating coils and the 'domes, it will be observed that the same is arranged on top of the boiler 7 so as to receive any heat radiating therefrom as well as the heat from the smoke and hot products of combustion pipes. It will also be noticed that this superheater covers or protects the upper part of the boiler and consequently prevents the radia-. tion at that point.
In Fig. 4 will be seen a slightly modified form of the invention, in which the front part of the boiler 7 issurrounded by a housing 1-3 which thus receives heat by radiation from the boiler as well as from the smoke and hot roducts of'combustion designed to be directed through the smoke, stacks 10 and 14 respectively. In this form of the invention the boiler 17 is mounted in the same manner as shown in Fig. 1, but the superheating coil 30 is wound or passed mast c around the entire boiler so as to receive a maximum amount of heat therefrom. In
this form of the invention it will be observed that the steam may be taken directly from the boiler 7 by the pipe 31 or may be caused to pass through the superheating coil 30 and be discharged out pipe 32. The
pipes 31 and 32 may be connected to one or more cylinders in any desired manner,
the same not forming any part of the invention.
Having thus described my inventioml claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a superheater device for traction engines, the combination with the boiler of a traction engine, of a steam dome connected to the upper part of said boiler and in free communication with the upper part of the interior of the boiler, means for directing steam from said steam dome to a point of discharge," and exhaust reheating coil surrounding said dome, and means for automatically connecting said dome and said coil for maintaining a predetermined pressure in said coil.
