SPECTACLE-TEMPLE PIVOT-BUTT.
Application filed June 25, 1914. Serial 310. 847,182.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY F. SHINDEL, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Glenside, in the county of Berks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spectacle- Temple Pivot-Butts, of which the following,
is a specification.
My invention relates particularly to twopart spectacle temples of the class shown in Patents Nos. 536,2 l8 and 8&1555, issued to T. A. \Villson on March 20, 1895, and January 22, 1907 respectively, wherein a separately formed pivot piece is employed in connection with an ordinary temple wire or shaft; and it consists in the improved construction hereinafter fully described andv claimed in connection with the accompanying drawings, the main novel feature being an attached pivot piece formed of an endwise doubled wire as set forth. 7
Figure 1 shows a completed spectacle temple embodying my invention. Fig. 2 shows a fully formed pivot-butt piece ready to be secured to the temple wire; the latter being indicated in relative position and with a clamping cap-piece strung upon it. Figs.
3 and 4t are enlarged views and illustrate respectively the flat and grooved wire employed to produce the pivot-butt as shown in Figs. .1 and 2; Figs. 5 and 6 indicating modified forms of the wire which may be employed. Figs. 7 and 8 indicate modified forms of the finished butt, and Fig. 9 is an edge view of the same.
In the prior patents referred to the separately formed pivot piece employed is made from a stamped sheet metal blank, shaped as required. My improved separately formed pivot piece is simply made from a piece of wire of any suitable cross-section, by doubling the same and adapting the brought-together end portions thereof to engage the temple shaft and the bend portion thereof to form a suitable pivot-eyed end, as will be specifically described by reference to the preferred embodiment of the invention illustrated in the drawings.
A represents an ordinary wire or shaft such as is commonly used for spectacle temples; and B my improved separately formed pivot piece which is attached to an end portion of the shaft A so as to form a pivot-eye butt thereon. This pivot piece B, as shown, is formed from a short piece of wire by bend- Specification of Letters Patent.
Pat'entcdFeb. 15-, 1916.
shaft A between them, the bend of the wire being shaped to form a pivot-eye end.
The term wire is used to include a rod or strand of any suitable cross-section, formed-by drawing or otherwise; the piece 2 shown in Fig. A as of suitable form for the purpose, being a semi-circular grooved wire of uniform metal thickness which when flattened forms a thin strip of the cross-section indicated in Fig. 3, having beveled edgesB, 3 as shown. lVhen this grooved wire is doubled as illustrated, the opposed end portions l, 4: are adapted to encircle and grip the shaft A with the edges 3, 3 abutting so as to form a ti ht sleeve tl1ereon;fwhile the bend-portion 5 thereof forms a pivot-eye opening 6, I r -The pivot-eye 6 may be readily located either in line with the axis of the shaft A,
or to one side thereof, as differently shown in Figs. 1, 2, 7 and 8. And the bend-portion 5 may serve as a pivot-eye end in the form indicated in Fig. 7, though it is preferably flattened and shaped as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2 to form a better finished pivotend, with a suitably located stop-shoulder 10 provided therein as is frequently desired.
In attaching my improved pivot piece to the shaft A, the opposing grooved portions 4, l, are forced together upon the interposed end of the shaft so as to tightly inclos e and grip the latter; and are further secured, as shown, by a clamping ring 12 at the eX- tremities thereof. This ring 12 may be merely an encircling band, but is preferably a cup-shaped cap-sleeve as shown, having a central perforation through which the shaft A is passed, and adapted to inclose the ends of the opposing grooved portions 4, 4, of the pivot piece andto form an ornamental finish I pivot piece B thereto, but any .possible turning of the shaft on the latter may be readily insured against, as by forming av bend or change in form in the shaft wire in the manner set forth in said Patent No. 841,755. It will be readily understood that the invention thus provides for combining advantages of appearance and strength, with simplicity and economy of construction.
Vvhat I claim is:
1. A temple pivot-piece of doubled Wire, the opposing end portions of the wire having grooved inner faces and the bend-portion thereof forming a pivot eye.
2. A temple pivot-piece of doubled wire, the opposing end portions of thewire having grooved inner faces and the bend-portion thereof being flattened and forming a pivot eye.
3. A spectacle temple comprising a shaft portion and a separately formed pivot piece of doubled wire; said shaft portion being interposed between and secured to the parallel end portions of the doubled Wire and the bend portion of the latter forming a pivot eye.
of doubled wire; said shaft portion being clamped between the parallel end. portions of the doubled wire and the bend portions of the latter forming a pivot eye.
5. A temple shaft provided with a pivot piece consisting of a doubled wire having opposing grooved portions which jointly engage the 'temple wire and a bend-portion forming a pivot-eye temple end.
6; A temple shaft provided with a pivotpiece consisting of a doubled wire having opposing grooved portions which jointly engage .the temple Wire and a bend-portion forming a pivot-eye temple end, and a clamping ring for said grooved portions.
7 A temple shaft provided with a pivotpiececonsisting of a doubled wire having opposing grooved portions which jointly en-- gage the templewire and a bend-portion forming a pivot-eye temple end, and a cap for said grooved portions strung upon the temple wire.
In testimony whereof I ailix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
