' i To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARENCE F. BENJA- MIN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the town of Milford, county of New Haven, and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Carpenters Squares and Miter- Gages; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to whichit appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in combined carpenters squares and miter gages, and pertains more particularly; to a folding rule capable of being utilized as a square and miter gage and wherein the pivotal sections are adapted to be retained in any angular relation, and it has for its primary aim to provide a rule of the above character embodying novel means for fixedly adjusting the rule sections in anypredetermined relation. 7 j V The invention further aims to produce such a device whereby accurate adjustments may be obtained in a facile manner.

Adjacent the bend or neck 11, the locking device is enlarged and provided with: a knurled surface 14 to facilitate the removal of thelatch from a notch against the action of a leaf spring 15 which is fixed 1n the rule section 5 and formed with a flat portion 16 adapted. to, engage with a corre 'spondingly contoured face 17 of theneck 11, when the locking device is in normal inoperative position, to retain the latter from accidentally jostling out of position.
In proximity to the periphery of the head or disk '3 is a resilient finger or'brake shoe 18 which is adapted to be engaged by the cam 10 of the locking device to force the shoe into frictional contact with the periphery of head 3, this locking means being employed when the operator wishes to adjust the rule sections at an angular relation not obtain-' able by the latch and notches, as when a notch is not registering with the latch. The cam is operated by pulling or swinging the locking device backwardly from normal position asshown in Fig. 4. Thus, the locking device serves as a single means for applying thebrake shoe, and throwing in the latch. The resilient brake shoe is fixed at one endportion between the side plates 6 by rivet 19 and is preferably formed withan extension, 20 rwhich constitutes a wall for the chamber 21in which the locking device is housed. Upon increasing the angular relation between the rule sections, the latch 9 will antomatically retract from the notch but on tending to decrease the angular relation the latch will tend to enterthe notch deeper, this being a noteworthy fact since a carpenter invariably marks along the outside edge of his tool.
It sometimes happens that an acute bevel is desired thereby necessitating contraction of the rule sections to almost closed position. In order that the operator may have access tothe pawl, the abutting edges of the upper plates 2 and 6 are cut out,ras at 22, and the locking device provided with a pin 23 whereby the locking device maybe operated to move the latch 9 or cam 10. The abutting face of section ,1 is provided with a pocket 24 between its side plates 2 to receive the projectinglocking device therein and permit of the rule folding compactly.
What is claimed is:
1. An instrument of the character described comprising pivotally connected sections, one section being formed with a series a .of notches, and a locklng device pivoted on the other section and including a latch adjustable on the device and adapted to engage in a. notch of 'thefirst section and means for adjusting the latch.
2. An instrument of the character described comprising pivotally connected sections, one section being formed with a series of notches, and a locking device movably mounted on the other section and including a yieldable latch adapted to engage in a notch of the first section and means for adjusting the yieldable latch of'the locking device. In an instrument of the character described, movably connected sections, one of which is provided with a series of notches, means on the other section toengagein the notches of the first section to retain-the sections in fixed. adjustment, other means on the, other section for lockingthe sections in fixed adjustment, and a common operating means for the aforesaid means.
4. An instrument of the character de-' scribed comprising pivotally connected sections, one section being formed with. a series of notches, and a locking device movably mounted onthe other section and comprising a body portion and an integral. latch extending alongside of the body portion of the locking device, and a screw member car.- ried'by the latch and adapted to bear on the body of the locking device for adjusting the, latch.
5. An instrument ofjthe character de* scribed comprising pivotally connected sections, one section of which has a series of notches therein, a locking device pivoted on the other section and adapted to engage in a notch of the first section to hold the sections in" fixed angular-"relation, said" device the other section, and means carried by the;

11. In an instrument of the character described, pivotally connected sections, a fricgaging with the other section, and positive means adapted for fixedly holding the sections at a fixed adjustment and being movably mounted on the first specified section for actuating the frictional brake.
