COMBINATION GAS-VALVE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Feb; 15, 1916.
Application filedJune 1,1915. 'seria1no.31,42a
' To all'wlzom it may concern Be it known thatI, J AMEs W. AsHBAUoH, a citizenof the United States, residing at Bremen, in the county of Fairfield and State of Ohio,.-have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Gas-Valves, of which the following is a. specification.
This invention relates to combination gas valves and is designed generally as animprovement in combination valves wherein thegas and air leading to any type ofordinary burner structure are regulated. I The present invention is designed particularly as an improvement over my previous patents shown and described in Patent Nos. 852,591 and 1,093,026, issued on May 7, 1907, and April 14, 1914:, respectively.
The main object of my invention resides in the provision of a structure wherein the orificial outlet for the gas is decreased in size as the structure controlling the admission of gas to the valve structure'as a whole, is decreased, the size of the orificial outlet of this gas from the valve structure is also proportionately reduced in size. This arrangement i's resorted to to maintain the velocity of outflow approximately constant for all practical limits between wide open and closed positions of the structure governing the inlet of gas. I find it desirable to maintain approximately the same rate of flow of gas out of the valve structure as a whole, in order-that it may properly mix with the required amount of air as it passes through the mixer structure. In this connection, my preferred arrangement is such that the regulation of the size of the orificial outlet is rendered automatic by the turning on or off of the ordinary valve structure for controlling the admission ofgas.
A further object of my invention resides in. the combination'of gas admissionstructure, together with the outlet control with I a supplemental air regulating structure of the nature so that the amount of air permitted to enter the mixture structure as a whole, is reduced or increased as the volume of gas'passing therethrough is reduced or increased respectively. p
A further object of my invention resides in the provision of a peculiarly novel type ofnozzle element whereby the fiow of gas from the structure as a whole, may be regulatedby increasing or decreasing the size of its outlet.
The preferred embodiment-of my invention is shown in the accompanying sheet of drawings, inwhich similarcharacters of reference. designate corresponding parts, and in which:
Figure 1 is a' view in elevation, partially in section, showingmy Iimproved valve structure, F ig. 2 is-a vertical section of the.
structure shown in Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on line 33 or F ig. 2 and looking in the direction of the arrows, Figs. 4 and 5 are side elevations and plan views respectively of-the nozzle element used by me, Fig.6 is a view looking into the face of the valve structure and showing the regulator shutter'partially' closed and also showing the nozzle element closed to decrease the sizeofthe gas outlet, and, Fig 7 is'a view showing the shutter structure at its greatest opening and'also showing the gas outlet at its greatest opening.
In the dr awings, there is shown avalve casing 1, this valve casing being of tubular construction and having a tapered inner bore. One side of this'valve casing is provided with a type of fitting shown at 2, this fitting being threaded as at 3, to receive the gas supply pipe, the fitting tube itself forming the gas intake portion. Within this casing there is rotatably mounted a correspondingly tapered'valve plug 4., this plug being of a hollow structure'such as is shown at 5' and being further provided with a transverse slot 6 of a length so that the valve plug may be turned through an arc of approximately 180 degrees between closed and open positions of the valve. This slot is so positioned with respect to the gas inletportionthat in-it's'normally open position, it is 'in communication with the reduced passage 7 formed in this-gas inlet portion and by means of these passages the gas is permitted to enter the hollow space 5. Within this hollow space there is confined a nozzle element designated generally by.
the numeral 8, this nozzle element being provided with a plurality of longitudinally extending slits 9 at its outlet end, this outlet end being further rounded orreduced in size as is'shown at 10. The opposite end by the valve plug 4 in order that there shall not be a relative movement between the nozzle element and the plug during the normal operation of the device. The rounded end 10 of the nozzle 8 cooperates with an outlet fitting 15 adjustably held in the forward end of the valve plug 4 by means of the threaded connection shown at 16, the interior of the fitting 15 being correspondingly rounded as is indicated in order that the prongs formed by the slits 9 may be wedged toward each. other to reduce the size of the outlet. I
Theforward'end of the valve plug 4 also rigidlycarries an air shutter 17, this shutter being in rigid engagement with the plug by means of the flange fitting shown at 18, this fitting coming into wedging engagement with one face vof the shutter by means of the threaded connection 19, thus forcing it into wedging engagement with the shoulder 20 I on the end of the valve plug. This shutter cooperates with the bell member designated 21, in that it plays over its straight end 22, this end being provided with a semi-circular opening 2-3. The opposite end of the plug 4: 1
1s provided with anoperating. handle designated 2 1, the-collar'member 25 forming a portion ofthe handle structure and being held in position on this plug by means of the washer 26 and the screw 27. The washer 28 and the threaded collar 29 are also provided to maintain-the plug in its true position with respect to-the casing during the normal op;- eration of the valve as a whole.
The operation of my device is as follows: Assuming the parts to be in the positions indicated in Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 6, it will be noted that the nozzle member has been forced forwardly sothat the prongs formed by the slits 9 have been forced toward each other to reduce the size of the gas outlet and this reduction is made so that the-gas will issue in solid cylinder form. This reduc tion in size is effected by the engagement of the screw or pin 12 with the cam face 11 on theend of the nozzle member, thus forcing it forwardlyinto wedging engagement with. the outlet fitting 15. Movement of the handle 24, downwardly as indicated in F ig. 7 will turn the valve plug 4. so that the passage 7 in the inlet formation 2 will be entirely uncovered, thus permitting the maximum amount of :gas to enter the plug. At the same time, the pin 12 has been so moved thatthe nozzle 8 may move rearwardly a slightdistance to enable the prongs to eX- pand to therebyincrease the size of the orificial opening. This rearward movement is effected by the resiliency of the prongs 6 in their cooperation with the tapered inside wall of'theoutlet fitting 15. Duringthis operation the shutter 17 has been moved from the position indicated inFig- 6 to the position indicated in Fig. 7 thus uncovering practically all of the slotted opening 23 in the 'bell2l and thereby permitting the en-- trance of the maximum amount of mixing valve is completely open. Also, the amount of air supplied to eifect the combustible "mix. ture is'similarly regulated and both of these:
regulations take place automatically by turning of the handle 24: one way or the other.
