To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS N. RUssnLL, a citizen of the United States, residing at (bk-ago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway- Cars, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to railway it has for its object the provision and improved form of car end tion.
It is common in railway cars to brace the upper framework of the car very strongly cars, and of a new construcagainst movement longitudinally of the Car relative to the lower framework thereof.
I t is the object of my invention to provide a car end which may be connected atits ends to the upper and the lower framework, respectively, the -form being such that there may be a maximum of strength vertically so as to protect against the closure members'be ing bowed outward along a horizontal intermediate line. As is well known, in the use of a car carrying a load, enormous stresses are brought to bear upon the ends of the cars, and it is accordingly necessary that very great care be. given to the matter of providing a strong well-braced construction of closure members so as to insure the car being maintained in first-class condition under ordinary conditions f use.
The objects of my invention have been attained by the use of a construction such as that shown in the draw ngs involving the use of steel plate closure members having pressed therein in vertical position. a plurality of strengthening ribs or corrugations, the upper edge of the closure plate, whether of one or more sections, being very securely fixed to an end plate which is, in turn, strongly made and securely braced.
It is another object of my invention to provide a car .end of the type described which shall be given the maximum strength at about a point where the maximum pres sure is brought; to bear against the .end.
It isanother object of my invention to provide a new and improved juncture between the several sections of a multiplepart end-closure plate.
It another object of my invention to improve the form and construction of cars in sundry details hereinafter pointed out.

I Referring to Figs. 1 to 4, in which corresponding parts are designated by the same reference characters -10 indicates the end sill and 11 the side sillofa car embodying one form of my improved construction.- As shown in Fig. 1, a beltrail 12 is provided approximately midway between the side sill 11 and the side plate 13, the side plates 13 at opposite sides of the car being secured together by an-end plate 14. Gussets-15' are secured to the side plates '13 short distance from the end plate 14, bracing members 16 being employed for connecting the gussets with the end plate, whereby the end plate 14 is very strongly r inforced and braced relative to the side plates 13. Secured upon the'outer faces of the side sill 11, the belt rail 12 and the side plate 13 at each side of the car are the vertically-extending side sheathing boards 17 secured in properposition upon' the side sills "11, and suitably supportedtherefrom, ihore are decking hoarrls 18 of any suitable type. 1. In a railway car, the combination of a sheet-metal end plate comprising a vertically-extending portion having an oilset flange at its lower edge, and two sheetmetal end-closure plates arranged side by side below said end plate with said flange overlapping their upper edges and firmly connected thereto, the ends of the vertically-extending portion of the. end plate being turned at an angle to extend along the outer face of the side sheathing. the offset at the lower edge of the end plate being faded out at the turned ends thereof.

In a railway car, the con'il'iination of an lower end to said end sill and having a plurahty of strengthening ribs pressed therein extending upward in vertical position from said end sill to substantially the upper end of said plate and spaced at intervals between the side edges thereof, and an end plate structure extending downward on the outer face of said end-closure plate, said end plate structure comprising bracing means for strengthening it againstbowing outward at an intermediate point whereby the end plate and the end-closure plate mutually reinforce each other against strain longitudinally of the car.
5. In a railway car, the combination of a sheet-metal end plate comprising a verti-.
cally-extending portion, a sheet-metal end- ,1 closure plate secured at its upper end to said end plate, a tie-plate secured to said endclosiire plate at its side edge and extending along the side of the car, means for securing said tie-plate to the bell rail of the car, and a flange on the lower end of said end-closure plate secured to the upper face of the end sill of the car, said end-closure plate being provided with vertically-extendingstrengthening ribs adapted to-strengihen said end closure plate against being bowed outward relative to said end sill and said end plate.

In a railway car, the combination of a sheet-metal end plate con'iprisiiig a vertically-extending portion, a sheet-metal endclosiire plate secured at its upper end .to said end plate, a flange on the side edge of said endclosure plate extending about the side sheathing and firmly secured thereto, a tieplatc secured to said flange at its lower end and extending diagonally downward along the side of the ca r, means for securing said tie-plate to the side sill oi the car, and a flange on the lower end of said end-closure plate secured to the upper face of the end sill of the car, said end-closure plate being provided with vertically-extending strength ening ribs adapted to strengthen said ndclosure plate against being bowed outward relative to said end sill and said end plate.

In a railway car, the combination of a sheet-metal end plate comprising a vertically-extending portion and two portions conforming to the slope of the roof of the car, a sheetanetal end-closure plate extending up inside of an offset flange formed on the lower edge of the vertically-extending portion of the end plate, means for securing said flange to said end-closure plate, the ends of the Vertically-extending portion of said end plate being turned to extend along the sides of the car and being secured firmly thereto, and a flange on the lower end of said end-closure plate secured to the upper face of the end sill ot' the car; said end-closure plate being provided with vertically-extending strengthening ribs adapted to strengthen said end-closure plate against being bowed outward relative to said end sill and said end plate.
