portation, storage and display of crackers, 7
and other articles.
Further said invention has for its object to provide a receptacle of the character described which shall have no projecting corners or edges to interfere with the packing of said receptacles in large boxes or cases. Further said invention has for its object to provide a receptacle of the character specified, having a plurality of openings in its front, and means for closing said open ings from within in such manner that said closing means shall constitute a substantially flush surface.
Further said invention has for its object to provide a receptacle having a plurality of openings therein, one of which is adapted to be closed by a transparent covering section, and the other by a non-transparent covering section which latter is adapted to engage with the former to produce a substantially smooth wall completely covering the inner side of the receptacle to the rear of the openings therein.
To the attainment of the aforesaid objects and ends our invention consists in the novel details of construction, and in the combination connection and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, and
. then pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification wherein like nu merals of reference indicate like parts Figurel, is a front view showing one form of receptacle constructed according to, and embodying our said invention; Fig. 2, is a section taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, is an enlarged detail rear view of the front of the receptacle; Fig. 4:, is a section taken on the line 4L4 of Fig. 3, and Fig. 5,
areceptacle of the character usually employed for the transportation, storage and display of crackers, and analogous articles. The said receptacles are ordinarily formed of sheet metal, and provided at their tops with hinged covers 11, and at their front portions with a plurality of openings, one of which is adapted to receive a transparent covering section, and the other adapted to receive a name plate section which is usually made ofmetal or other non-transparent material( 4 The receptacle is provided adjacent to its upper edge with angular flanges 12, 12. The horizontal surfaces of said flanges are disposed in a horizontal plane slightly below the top edge of the receptacle in order to form a recessed top to receive the cover 11,
and the reinforcing flange 18 provided upon the under side thereof.
1% denotes a recess provided in the upper frontedge of the receptacle to obtain access to the free front edge of said cover 11 in order to raise the same. 7
The front of the receptacle 10 is provided with two parallel, horizontal openings 15, 16, having inwardly inclined. flanges, 15 16, respectively. The flange 16 surrounding the lower opening 16, is made of less depth than the flange 15?, surrounding the opening 15, the purpose of which will be hereinafter explained. Upon the opposite side walls of the receptacle, adjacent to the front wall are secured guides 17, 17, which extend from the angular flanges 12, 12, at the top of the receptacle, down to the bottom of said receptacle. The upper portion of each of said guides 17, consists of a pair of parallel members 18, 18 which are soldered or otherwise secured at their rear connected Each of said guides 17 has the lower portion of its inner or rear member 18 made wider than its upper portlon to form a flange sec edges to the inner side wallof the receptacle;
18, 18. The extreme lower end of the section 20 is partly severed therefrom, and then bent outwardly in prolongation of the rear member 18 to form a tongue 21 directly above the bottom of the receptacle.
22 denotes a rectangular covering section for the lower opening 16 which covering section is preferably made of glass or other transparent material. T he said transparent covering section is adapted to be fitted intermediate the flange sections 20, 20 of the guides 17, 17, and has its outer surface hearing against theinner edge of the inclined flange 16, and its lower edge maintained in position intermediate said guides by the retaining members or tongues 21, 21.
23 denotes a covering section which is preferably made non-transparent and arranged to the rear of the upper opening 15. In the construction shown said covering section 23 is made of sheet metal and is designed to be suitably marked upon its outer side, to designate the contents of the receptacle. The said covering section has its up per and lower longitudinal edges 2 1, 25 folded upon itself to reinforce or strengthen the covering section. The said covering section 23 is of such width as to permit of the same readily passing between the opposite edges of the angular flanges 12, 12 at the top of the receptacle, and be received intermediate the parallel guide members 18, 18. The lower corners of the covering section 23 are cut away at 26, 26 to form shoulders which are adapted to rest upon the upper edges of the guide sections 20, 20, and form a depending edge or projection 27 which is adapted to extend intermediate the guide sections 20, 20 and below the horizontal upper edges thereof. When said covering section 28 is properly in position within the guides 18, 18, the depending edge or projection 27 thereof will extend below, and to the rear of the upper edge of the transparent covering section 22, and thereby serve to hold the same duly in position within said receptacle and with its front surface against the inner edge of the inclined flange 16" surrounding the lower opening 16.
It will be observed that by means of our invention we are enabled to provide a receptacle for crackers and the like in which the inner side of the receptacle front is practically smooth and unbroken and thus affords no space or crevice in which crumbs can collect or settle. Further it will be noted that the means for covering the openings in the receptacle although composed of two separate parts are firmly secured in place without requiring any separate locking mechanism for accomplishing that end.
Having thus described our said invention, what we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1- 1. A storage and display package comprising a receptacle having a-plurality of openings in one side thereof, a pair of guides adjacent to the ends of said openings, members extending vertically-forwardly from said guides, a covering section arranged intermediate said members for covering one of said openings, and a second covering section disposed within said guides for covering the other of said openings and engaging one edge of saidfirst-named covering section to secure said first-named covering section in vplace, substantially as specified.
2. A storage and display package comprising a receptacle having a plurality of openings in one of its sides arranged one above the other, a pair of guides in said receptacle adjacent to the ends of said openings, flanges extending vertically-forwardly from said guides, a covering section disposed intermediate the flanges on said guides for covering the lowermost of said openings, and a second covering section disposed within the upper portions of said guides for covering the other of said openings, and en gaging, at its lower edge, the upper edge of said first-named covering section for securing the latter in position within said receptacle, substantially as specified.
3. A storage and display package comprising a receptacle having a plurality of openings arranged therein one above the other, vertical guides at the opposite ends of said openings, flange members extending forwardly from the lower portions of said guides, a covering section for one of said openings disposed intermediate said flange members, and a second covering section sup ported upon said flange members for covering the other of said openings, substantially as specified.
to said flange members, a covering section disposed intermediate said flange members, and in front of said retaining members for covering the lower of said openings, and a covering section, disposed within said guides, having its outer surface engaging the inner edge of the other of said openings and serving to maintain the outer surface of said first-named covering section in engagement with the inner edge of said lowermost opening, substantially as specified.
5. A storage and display package comprising a receptacle having a plurality of openings therein arranged one above the other, and having inwardly extending flanges along the edges of said openings, and the inner edges of said flanges arranged in vertical planes, one behind the other, vertical guidesiarranged upon opposite inner sides of said receptacle adjacent to the ends of said openings, each comprising a pair of separated parallel members, and a flange member extending vertically forward from the inner of said parallel members and at right angles thereto, a covering'section fitted intermediate the flange members at the lower ends of said guides, and having its outer surface engaging the inner edge of the flange of the lower of said openings, and a second covering section disposed within the upper ends of said guides to the rear of said first-named covering section and supported upon said flange members and having its outer surface engaging theinner edge of the flange of the upper of said openings, and its lower edge engaging the rear upper portion of said first-named covering section whereby to hold the same in position within said receptacle, substantially as specified. V
