To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 'LAMos LEGERE, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing in South Bethlehem, in the county of North Hampton and State of'Pennsylvania, have inventeda certain new and useful Improved Apparatus for Concentric Punching, of which the following is a specification Thev principal. object of the present invention is to provide apparatus for the concentric punching of shrapnel casings and to that end embraces a punching die, stripper and centering collar so disposed, arranged and connected as to providea more efficient and commercially valuable punching apparatus than like apparatus now 1n general use.
Other and further objects of the present invention reside in the providing of general details of construction and in the arrange ment of parts as will hereinafter more fully appear.
With these and other objects in view, the

For the purpose of illustrating my invention, I have shown in the accompanying drawings one form thereof which is at present preferred by me, since the same has been stood that the various instrumentalities of which my invention consists can be variously 1 arranged and organized and that my invention is not limited to the precise arrangepose of which will presently appear.

since said collar has no function'in the operation of punching. A billet 13',heatedto a temperature of about 1500 F. (a decisive yellow in color) is now fitted tothe bore of' the stripper 16, and thepunch lowered. As
'the billet is forced down throughthebore of said stripper any scale upon the billet is scraped therefrom'by the top edge of the stripper bore. In practice the depth of the die bore and the height of the billets are so proportioned that when the billet has reached its lowest level (see Fig. 8), the top of the billet is still engaged within a portion of the stripper bore. the billet the punch forces out the billet walls so that they. engage the tapered walls of the die. That portion of the billet which has been held within the bore of the strip per is accommodated by the space at the point designated a. As the billet is further punched, the Walls of the shrapnel casing being formed are forced upwardly around the .punch until finally the position shown in Fig. 9 is reached, at which time the operation of punching is completed andthe progress of the punch is stopped by well known mechanism, not shown in the drawings. The shrapnel casing now being completed, the punch is raised to its full height with the said casing clinging thereto. When the top of the stripper reaches an abutting position with the underside of the straps 20, the movement of the casing is stopped and as vsaid punch continues to move upward, said stripper strips the punch free of said casing. The stripper is now removed and the shrapnel casing lifted from the die.
It will now be apparent that I have devised a novel and useful construction which embodies the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description and while I have in the present instance shown and described the preferred embodiment thereof which has been found in practice to give satisfactory andreliable results, it is to be understood that the same is susceptible of modification in various particulars without departing from the spirit orscope of the invention or sacrificing any ofits advantages. 3. Apparatus of the class noted embracing a die having a counter-sunk cavity therein and a stripper equipped with a portion shaped for removable insertion within the counter-sunk portion of said cavity.
4. In apparatus of the class noted, the combination of an operatively disposed punch, a die holder operative to be centered beneath said punch, a die having a billet receiving bore, a stripper operatively fitted to said die and having a bore therethrough in concentric register with the die bore and a centering collar having a boss, which boss is adapted for removable insertion within the stripper bore, said'collar having a central opening therethroughof a diameter of substantially the same diameter as the greatest cross-section of said punch.

In apparatus of the class noted, the combination of an operatively disposed punch, a die holder, a die having a tapered billet receiving bore therein, which bore terpunch, a die holder, a die having a tapered billet receiving bore which bore terminates in a tapered counter bore and a stripper having a tapered boss adapted for removably fitting within said tapered counter bore, which stripper including said boss has a bore therethrough in concentric register with said die bore, the bottom of said boss having an overhang relation with said die bore.
7. Apparatus of the class noted embrad ing a die having a "cavity therein, a stripper equipped with a portion shaped for removable insertion within said cavity and a cente-ring collar removably seated upon and partially within said stripper.
8. Apparatus of the class stated embracing a die having a cavity therein, and a stripper equipped with a portion shaped for removable insertion within said cavity and constructed to slightly overhang the same.
