xa'rnEErNE in ianxnmnn.or' passare, NEW JEnsEY. 1
V EownEn-PUEE.
Be litknown that I, KATHERINE K.
.BAxELAAR, a citizen, of the? United States,
andi a resident of Passaic, in the county of Passaic and State of NewJersey, have invented anew and-Improved Refillable Powder-Puff, of which the following is a full,
clear, and exact description.
,The object ofthe invention is to provide a-new and improved reillable powder puff, arranged to permit the user to lill the puff with any kind, of face powder of the users choosing, toprevent the powder from coming out-too freely, and to allow the yuser to readily appl any 'desired amount of powder to the face and Ato rub it overv the desired space on the face.
In order' to accomplish the desiredA result,
use is made of a casing having a filling mouth and formed of two sldes united I alongtheir edges except at the said mouth,l
one of the sides having perforations, closing a means' for ynormally holding the said mouthv inclosed position, and a perforate distributer overlying the inner face of the said perforate 'de t0 distribute the powder vin thecasing to the said perforations and to retard the passage of' the powder. to theouter face of thesaid perforate member. Use is also madeof separable fastening de. vices for fastening the sides together vat the mouth anda special closingap ar.-
I ranged within Vthe mouth to prevent the powder from seeping out 'of the mouth.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specication, in
which similarcharacterspf reference indi-v cate corresponding parts 1n all the views.
Figure 1 is a face viewfof the powder puff Fig' 2 is :in-enlarged sectional side ele-4 vation of the same; Fig-t3 is a perspective view of the powder puif with the mouth and closing 'iiap in open position; Fig. 4 isl a 5 is lacross section of the same with the v vormed of two s1des A and yB of powder puff material such ascotton plush, chamols cloth or the like. The pile of the sidesv A sectional elevation ofthe same; and Fig.

The-powder puff is in` the form ofa casing, preferablyfmade circular in shape, and
and B extends onfthe outer -ffaces thereof and the edges of the sides A and Bare fas- "ed together, preferably by stitchesC, ex-` -re iiiwti 1i f Letters Patent# I Patented.Feb.8,'1'916.' application nieuwe 9,1915. s'eamasao'zo.
cept for ashort distance to provide a filling mouth D for filling the interior of the casing with pow/der E ofthe users own choosing. The s1de A is vprovided in its-body portion with perforations or apertures A formed 'by punching or stamping out correspondmgportions of the body of the fabric. the openings, however, being 'normally coveredy by the pile on the outer face of the 'side A. By this arrangement the powder E within thel 'casing is not liable to flow out `ofthe openings unless Athe pui with its perforate face is llghtly struck against the sideof the face orother part to be powdered. 's'It is'understood that when the'pow" der puff is used in this manner some of the powderA also 'passesout from between the pile onto the' part ofthe face touched at the time. The side A can nowlbe used for rubbingthe powderin place, but preferably the'other side B is used for this purpose so asv ,to prevent too much powder from being applied "to the face.
Iniorde'rl tostill'mo're 'restrict the outiiow ofthe-powder E through the openings A',
use is made of a piece of tarlatan or otherV netting' F- overlying the inner face -of. the
side A `.andsecured on its 'edge to the edge4 of the -slde A, preferably bythe same stiltches to` It will be noticed thatthis piece of C used forfas'tening the sides A and gether.
a fabric F acts as aA distributer to distribute thepowder `to the'openings Aand at vthe same time to prevent the powder fromiiow- -POWde-I" Da S'SBS through the openings A andf i l .'1nto the p1le of the side A and some of the,
ing too -freely out ofthe openings A.` The mouthD is adapted to'be closed by separa- 4blelfastening devices .G -inthe form of a stud G and a socket 'G' vsecured to short pieces of liningsI-I and' I, -of closely woven` fabric, of which the piece I-I is doubled and secured along one edge to the sideAalong the mouth thereof and the piece I is 'secured along one edge to the side B of the casing 4 at the-mouth thereof. f When thesides are pressed togetheratthe mouth the studG engages the socket G to close the mouth and hold the same closed.
l In orden to preventthelpowder from accidentallypassmg out Vthrough the mouth ,use is-made of a closing iiap If formed by .folding the opposite or free edge ofthe lliningl I. On the outer face of the closing are " at pposite sides ofi the fastemng members flap secured sockets J v adapted to Ybe studs J, J are disengaged from each other.
to allow of completely opening the mouth to fill the easing with powder. After this has been done the sockets and studs are reengaged with each other to hold the casing a closed at the mouth.
The powder puff shown and described is .very simple in construction and allows convenient filling of the puff with any kind of face powder of the users choice, and the powder can be readily passed out of the casing in small quantities to the pile of the side A and to the face of the user, so that by the use of the side B the powder can be readily rubbed over the portion of the face to be powdered. As the pile overlies the openings ALin a loose fashion, it is evident that the powder is retained within the casing while carrying the puff about and the powder is also restrained from passing out of the openings by the netting F.
Having thus described my invention, Il
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

5. A refillable powder puff, comprising a flat casinghaving a filling mouth along its its edge for filling the casing with powder, the easing being formed of two sides formed of pieces of pile fabric mounted along their edges except at the' said mouth, the pile of the pieces being on the outer faces of the sides, one of the sides having perforations, separable fastening members on the inner faces of the sides at the mouth for closing the latter, a fabric closure within the said mouth and formed of two pieces of closely woven fabric, one of which is doubled and attached along one edge to the inside of the said casing 'at its'mouth, the other piece of fabric (being not doubled)l andattached along one edge to the inside of the opposite side of said casing at its mouth, the opposite edge of said piece of fabric being folded to form a closing iap and carrying means for releasably engaging a fastening means attached to the said doubled piece of fabric at a point adapted to bring it into engagement therewith, and a piece of netting overlying the inner face of the said perforate side of the casing, the edge of the said netting being secured to the edge of the perforate side.
the said casing having perforations for the passage of the powder from the interior of the casing to the face of the said perforate side, a closure formed of two pieces of fabric material, one of which is doubled and attached along one edge to the inside of they -said casing at its mouth, the other piece of fabric being attached along one edge to the inside of the oppositeA side of saidcasing at its mouth, the opposite edge of said piece of fabric being folded to form a closing flap,
