' Specification of Letters Patent.
P tent-mast. e, 1916.
Application filed April 16, 1915. Serial No, 21,716.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LEWIS PIRDUN', a citlzen of theUnited-States, and a resident of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Burners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full,.
clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in burners and more particularly to such as may be employed for sup lying fuel to furnaces in'which fluid fuel 1% employed.
One object of the invention is to so construct the burner that it may be operated to supply either gaseous or liquid fuel with steam or air, or so that both gaseous and liquid fuel may be mixed and injected with steam or air or both into the furnace.
A further object is to providebm'ner appliances of the character specified, whereby matically governed by the steam pressure in the boiler of the furnace with which the burner is employed, or "whereby gas sup as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings; F1g1118 1 is a top plan view of the device, partly m section; Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1; Flg. is a sectional view on theline of Fig. 3, and Figs. 5 and'6 are detail views.
1 represents a cylindrical shell compris ing two parts securely bolted together, and
from one of said partsof the cylindrical shell, a plate 2 projects. A bonnet or casing 3 is secured to the plate 2 and the cyllndrical shell, to form a chamber 4 lnto WhlCh steam is led preferably from the steam dome of the boiler furnace to which my improved burner suppliedfuel -such steam in the chamber 4 being utihzed 1n the op eration of the burner as hereinafter explained.
The cylindrical shell 2 is threaded at one end for the reception of a nozzle 5 from which the fuel will be projected, and this nozzle may be made:at outlet end with a threaded socket 6 to receive a cap 7 for closing the same when not in use. The rear Tulsa, in the county of Tulsa and: State of the shell and is threaded exterioz'ly for the reception of a jam nut 10 and a roupling 11. The coupling 11 carries a manually operable. air inlet valve 12, and through said coupl ng, a gas inlet pipe 13 projects, said gas pipe projecting past the air inlet valve and terminating forwardly of the same within the rear portion of the inner "nozzle or tube 9.
The cylindrical "Shell 1 is provided interiorly with; a beveled annular flange l4 and the tube 9 is rovided exteriorl with two annular shoul ers 15 and 16. close fit between the shoulder 15 and flange 14 is efl'ectedby suitable packing interposed between them, and a close fit between the shoulder 16 and the rear end of the shell 1 is efiected in a similar'manner. By "the provision-of the internal annular flange 14, said shell is divided into two annular chambers '17 and 18,the latter chamber communicating. with the bore of the outer or forward nozzle or tube 9 .Aninlet pipe 19 for hydrocarbon oil communicates with the chamber 17, and the inner nozzle or tube 9 is provided (where it passes through the chamber 17) with an oil inlet port 20. A valve 21 is employed to control the passage of oil through the port 20 into the nozzle or tube 9, and the stem 22 of this valve passes through a suitable stufling'box'23 on the shell 1, and passes through the chamber 4 formed by the bonnet 3- A, lever 24 is pivotally supported by a post or arm 25 within the chamber 4 and the long arm of'this lever is pivotally connected with the valve stem 22. A rod 26 nozzle 5 at the forward end of the inner is connected with the short arm of the lever 24 and passes into a chamber. 27 on the A steam pipe28 communicates withthe chamber 27 and is intended to convey steam from the steam dome of the-boiler to said chamber, so that the diaphragm 28 will be subjected to the steam pressure of the boiler at all times. Another chamber 29 is also located on the late 2 and contains 8. diaphragm 30. 'llhls chamber is also connected with the steam dome of the boiler by means of pipe 28 so that the diaphragm will be at all times subjected to the steam pressure 33, the latter being pivotally supported by a post or arm 34. To the long arm of the lever 33, the stem 35 of-a valve 36 1s pivotally connected, said valve serving to control the passage of steam from the chamber, 4,:
through a port 37 to the chamber 18 withinf the shell 9. Both valve stems 35 and 22 project through an opening in the bonnet 3 and are threaded at their free ends for the reception of nuts 38. Disks or washers 39 on the valve stems adjacent to the nuts.
thereon, serve as abutments for springs 40. which encircle said stems,--and the other ends of'these springs bear against the hon net 3. lit will be observed that the springs 40tend to move the valves 36 and 21 away from theirseats so as to open the steam and oil ports 37 and 20, and that the of steam against the ' diaphragms 30 and 28 tends to close said valves.
In the operation of my improved burner, gas will enter the rear end of the inner nozzle or tube 9 and mix with the air entering through the valve 12. The mixed gas and 'air will flow forwardly through the tube 9 and mix with oil entering at the port 20; The forwardportion of the tube 9 will be heated by the steam surrounding it in the chamber 18, and thus the oil in the fluid mixture will be vaporized, and the whole will leave the outer nozzle 5 mixed with steam emitted from the chamber 18, the
pressure of such steam also servin to carry the fluid fuel into the first boat 0% the iuruses in a manner to insure perfect combue tion.
As the supply of oil and steam to be mixed in the burner is governed by theboiler steam pressure automatically operating the valves 2?. and 23 as previously explained, the supply of oil and steam will be commensurate with the need to maintain the necessary combustion-in the fire box withoutv wasm. As the pressure of steam in the boiler increases, the oil valve 21 will operate to restrict the flow of oil into the inner nozzle or tube 9, and the valve 26 will be simi: larly o erated to reduce the how of steam to the amber 18 within the shell 1.
If gasis notavailable the burner may be operated with mixed air, oil and steam, the
quantity of oil and steam being automatisupply to the burner maybe regulated and controlled by the operation of the valve 26.
It will bev observed that my improved burner is adaptable for use with mixtures of air, gas, oil and steam, or withoil, air and steam, or with air and gas, as the circumstances in any given case may require.
Variousshght changes might be made'in the details of construction of my invention without. departing from the spirit thereof or limiting its scope and'hence I do not Wish to restrict myself tothe precise details herein set forth. v
Having fully described my invention what I claimas new 'and desire to secure by Lettors-Patent, is
1'. In. a burner, the combination with an elongated shell havin a nozzle outlet at one end, of an inner nozz e passing through said shell and terminating at its forward end near the nozzle outletv of the shell, said in ner nozzle and shell forming two annular chambers, means isolating said chambers from each other, an oil inlet communicating with one of said annular chambers, an automatically actuated valve for controlling the passe e V of oil from said last-mentioned chain er into the inner nozzle, a steam inlet communicating with the forward annular chamber, automatically actuated valve for controlling the passage of steam through said steam inlet, and an air inlet communicating with the. inner nozzle in rear of the 2. In a burner, the combination with an elongated shell, and a nozzle at the forward end thereof, of an inner nozzle passing through said shell and terminating near the first-mentioned nozzle, automatically con trolled means for admitting steam between the shell and the inner nozzle, separate automatically controlled means for admitting oil -into'the rear portion of the inner nozzle, and
the passage of oil from said rear chamber a into the nozzle, means for supplying steam to the forward annular chamber, and a forward nozzle communicating with said firstmentioned nozzle and with the annular steam chamber.
Mill
4. In aburner, the combination with an elongated shell having an internal annular flange, and a forward nozzle secured to said shell, of an inner nozzle inclosed within said shell and communicating with the forward nozzle, said inner nozzle having an annular annular chambers around said elongated nozzle, the, forward of said chambers-come municatin with the forward nozzle, means for contro ling the supply of steam to said forward chamber, means for supplying oil to the rear annular chamber, a valve for lever having 'one arm connected with the stem 'of said valve, and a 'steamlactuate'd diaphragm connected with the other arm of said lever.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribmg w1tnesses.
