Be it known that I,, Gnome J. Han, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Ornaha,-c ounty of Douglas, and State of Nebraska, have ,invented. certain new and useful Improvements inValves, of which the following is a fuIL'clear, and exact descri tion. m
heinvention relates to improvements in valves and more particularly to valves, such as are employed for gage and other valves that are ada ted for use on and about steam boilers and ocomotives.

The inner face of theen'd portion 15 of the extension or valve guide 12 is provided with a seat or recess fon'receivinga packing washer 22 of fiber, vulcanized rubber or the like, and the valve stem is provided with 11v fixed collar 23 which engages the inner face of the washer. A spring 24 is coiled about tion, is shifted longitudinally;to and from j I the valve stem and bears againstthe 'end of the valve casing and against thehub of the hand wheel 19. This spring presses the collar 23 of the valve stem againstthe washer 22 to thereby maintain a steam and watertight joint between the valve casing and stem. The spring also presses the hand wheel 19 against the nut 20 and prevents the loosening of the nut. Preferably, as shown, the hub of the hand wheel is provided with an inwardly extending, annular flange 25 which extendsover and incloses the spring 24,
The improvedconstruction shown can be cheaply manufactured. The plug, body portion or bonnet and thehandle may be formed of cast iron and preferably of malleable cast iron. The valve and valve seat are. preferably formed ofbrass. The-valve and also the valve seat can be conveniently removed and renewedlnasmuchas' the valve is pro vided ,with a square shank or body portion which fits into a correspondingly shaped bore of the extension or guide 12, the valve is held against turning and has a straight, longitudinal movement to and from the seat.
In this way, the valve cannot twist on or' 'cut the seat. The external conical seating surface 9 of the valve seat has a, very sharp taper, 'as'shown, so that the slight longitudinal movement of the annular valve on this seating surface prevents scale from I forming thereon, and at 'alltimes maintains. the seat clean, so that the valve can be se curely closed. Moreover, if' the valveis closed when the parts are hot, the valve will shrink onto its seat asit is cooled and will not shrink away from itsjseat and leak, as in prior constructions. r
- The spring 24 is heldunder considerable tension, so .that. the packing washer 22 is compressed to form a securesteamand water tight joint about the valve stem, and the spring also serves to, develop sufficient friction between'the, hand wheel and the nut 20 to prevent the loosening ofthelatter.

scale is'deposited onparts of thegage cock and. corrosion occurs. In the present con-= struction,. the parts of the" gage cock may be conveniently oiled without disassembling them, so that liming up. a d corroding i .'prevented.

The annular or cup-shaped valve 421su'rrounds the valve seat and is provided with a conical face of sharp taper which cooperatesv with the tapered bearing face 34 of- 'the valve seat 33. This construction prevents scale fromlodgingon the seat and effectually prevents leaking'of the valve when'the parts are cooled.
