Description
UNITED STATES CHARLES MELSOM OHARA, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN HAND CORN-SHELLERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 117,105, dated July 18, 1871.
T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatl, CHARLES MELSOM OHARA, of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Hand CornSheller patented by me, November 23, 1869, and May 2, 1871; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.
The improvement is in the substitution for the plates of equal Width and length hitherto employed of plates of,unequal Width and length, and in the substitution for the leather straps or loops hitherto employed of metal loops cast on the plates, thereby greatly cheapening the cost of manuiacuture and making it more convenient and durable.
Hitherto hand corn-shellers have been made with plates of equal Width. This is open to serithe leather loops heretofore used are expensive,
both in themselves and in the labor and rivets required to put them on, and they are not suffi' ciently durable to stand exposure to the weather to which they are often subjected.
To obviate these serious objections is the object of my invention, which consists of a hand cornsheller provided with one short narrow corrugated plate with metal loop attached, and one longer and wider concave corrugated plate with metal loop attached, hinged together.
In the drawing, A is the metal thumb-plate, and B the accompanying metal loop in which to place the thumb. C is the metal fingerplate with its accompanying metal loop D, in which the middle finger is placed.
By this constructioni. 6., the unequal Width of the platos in which the fin ger-plate C is the widesta support or reenforce is aftorded for the fingers, against which the thumb may exert greater force With less fatigue to the hand; and by this same arrangement a provision is made for shelling the smallest ear of pop-corn as well as the largest ear of Indian corn. Again, by reducin g the len gth of the thumb-plate A, th e strain, by reason of length of leverage on the hinge, is lessened, and only one hinge is made necessary, thus greatly reducing the cost of putting together.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, s
The improved hand corn-sheller herein described, consisting of the thumb-plate A and curved finger-plate G hinged together as shown, and provided With metallic loops B D outside, and shelling corrugations on their inner surfaces, as and for the purpose specified.
CHAS. MELSOM OHARA.
