ATTORNEY I UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEEIoE,

FILTER-FUNNEL.
To all whom 'it may concern.'
Be it known that I, O'ris GQGRAHAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements inv Filter-Funnels, of which the following is a speciicatiom My invention relates to funnels for filllng tanks and other receptacles, and especially to funnels adapted to remove solid matter from the liquid being poured, as well as to separate two liquids of different speclc gravities, as oil and water, or the llke.
The objects of my invention are, first, to provide a funnel that shall remove from the liquid all solid matter; second, to provide a funnel that shall remove any foreign liquid of heavier specific gravity that may be inpoint portion l and conical termiXed with the liquid being poured;
third, to provide a funnel from which the removed liquid of heavy specific gravity may be easily drained after pouring has ceased; fourth, to provide a funnel that is simple in construction, positive in operation, strong, and cheap to manufacture.
I attain the above objects by means of the construction described in these specifications, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which therefore becomes a part of this application for Letters Patent.
Like characters designate like parts throughout the several views of the drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of a funnel embodying my invention, the view as shown being partially broken away to better illustrate the several parts; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical secti-on of a funnel embodying myy invention.
Referring to the drawing, numeral 1 is the receiving portion of the funnel and 2 is the discharging portion, portions 1 and 2 being integrally .connected by a conical, portion 3, as shown in Fig. 2. The discharge portion 2 has an extension 4 within the conical portion 3, said extension terminating approximately slightly below the junction portion 3, as shown in Fig. 2.

the -illustration showing a very fine mesh wire gauze.
A defiecting member 6 is mounted upon the straining member 5 in such a manner as to deflect the liquid being poured toward the side of receiving portion 1 of the funnel, whence the liquid passes downward through the exposed annular portion of the screen 5, between members 6 and 1, into conical' portion 3. At this point the liquid is caused to turn upward in itsow, andshould there be present in the liquid being poured a small amount of any foreign liquid of heavier specific gravity, the change of direction of flow will cause a separation of thetwo liquids, the heaveir foreign liquid remaining in the conical portion 3, while the lighter liquid passes upward'through that annular portion of screen 5 included between member 6 and extension 4, and then downward through that portion offscreen 5 included within the periphery of extension 4, Iand thus out through discharge portion 2. A
baffie plate or collar 7 may be attached to extension 4 to provide against the inertia of the foreign liquid causing same to' impinge against extension 4 with suiicient force to create a vertical component suliicient to carry said heavy liquid over 'into eXtension 4.
A drain pipe 8 is provided for the purl pose of removing the liquid residue remaining in cone 3 after the pouring has ceased.
An annular lip 8a is provided upon portion l to prevent overflowing the funnel when in use 'My invention' may be made of any size Having thus disclosed my invention, what I claim is:
1. A funnel'com'prising a receiving chamber, a discharge member, a separating chamber adjacent said receiving chamber and intermediate said receiving chamber and Said discharge membera straining dia.-
l said tube being attached to said diaphragm and extending outside of said conical portion, an inverted dish shaped disk mounted if upon said diaphragm Within the cylindrical y portion of said funnel, the periphery of said disk being intermediate the periphery of the cylindrical portion of said funnel and the :f
periphery of said discharge tube.
lIn testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereunto aiixed my y Lsignature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
