To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD G.BUDD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have-invented certain new and useful Improvements in Windows, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to windows having .metallic sashes and adapted for use in buildings and railway cars. The invention is directed to the provision of an improved means for securing the glass or other panel of a window to the metallic sash.
The object of the invention is to provide such a securing means which will hold the parts rigidly throughout a long period'of use, which may be manufactured and assembled at low cost and which permits of removing the panel when such removal is desired. 7
The preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a front view of a window sash broken away in part, Figs. 2, 3' and 4 are transverse sections through the top, bottom pressed to the cross-sectional shape illus-' trated in those figures. At one edge of the strip a flange 7 is provided and at the other edge a fold 6 which incloses the flange 7 so as to unite the edges of the strip of metal and to provide upon the frame-member a flange extending forwardly of the sash.
The frame-member illustrated in Fig. 2 is formed of two strips of sheet-metal and this construction may be used for all of the frame-members if desired.
Referring now to the means for securing the pane of glass within the sash, the glass is positioned on one side by the inwardly extending flange on the frame. consisting of the folds 6 and flanges 7. To hold the pane of glass on the opposite side,"I provide retaming strips 18, consisting of strips of sheet-metal pressed to a substantially U.- shaped cross-section, as shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 4. This strip is secured in position by means of screws 19 coacting with the framemernbers. For this purpose, the retaining str ps 18 are provided with raised pads at lntervals throughout their length to form seats for the heads of the screws 19. As the sheet-metal employed in the construction of the frame-members is quite thin, the retainmg strips 18 would not be fastened to the frame-members sufliciently securely, if the screws 19 engaged threads formed in openings in the frame-members, since the re taining strips 18 are subjected to considerable strain, particularlyin windows for railway-cars. For-this reason, I provide additional devices for receiving the threaded ends of the screws 19. Threaded openings are formed'in the sheet-metal frame-members at intervals along the length of the retaining strips 18 and in each of these openings 1 provide a nut 21 threaded. both lnterlorly and exterior-1y. This nut is provided with a head 22 having flattened sides and of such dimensions that the distance between opposite flattened sides is the same as the distance between the side-walls of the retaining strips 18. i
- In assembling the parts, the nuts 21 are screwed into the threaded openings in the frame-members until the heads 22 of the nuts engage the frame-members and the nuts are brought to such positions that' two 'of the flattened sides thereof lie parallel to the length of the frame-member, as shown in Fig. 5. When the pane of glass 8 is positioned against the folds 6, Its edge being preferably provided with a soft gasket 23, the retaining strips 18 are positioned on'the opposite side of the pane of glass and pressed against the frame-member so that the side-Walls thereof straddle the heads'22 of the nuts 21. The screws 19' are then inserted through the openings in the pads 20 and screwed into the interiorly threaded openings in the nuts 21 until they hold the retaining strips 18 firmly upon the framemembers, By this construction, side strains on the retaining strips 18 are taken up by the heads 22 of the nuts 21 and transmitted directly to the frame-members by the nuts 21 and independently of'the'screws 19. main function of the screws 19, therefore, is merely to hold the retaining strips down upon the frame-members and the principal strains on these screws are in the direction of the length of the screws. Having described my invention, what it claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is":
