Be it known that we, JOHN H. BREWER and JOHN CHARLES, citizens of the United States, residing at Hagerstown, in the county of, WVashington and State of Mary,- land, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mechanical Movements, of

Our inventlon relates to new and useful improvements in a mechanical movement,

s ans. hi :a ifi nrwhm the lever 13 is lowered it will draw the pawl 22 away from the teeth 6 and the pawl 10 on the lever will engage the teeth. 6 and when the lever is raised it will allow the bar 3 to drop so that the pawl 22 will engage the next higher tooth. In lowering the bar it will be understood that the movement of the lever is opposite from that in raising the bar. In raising the bar the pawl 10 engages under the teeth and by pulling down on the lever the bar is raised. In lowering the bar the lever is lowered so as to engage the top of one of the teeth and as the lever is raised forces down the tooth and lowers the bar. While engaging the lever with the teeth the pawl 22 will engage and hold the bar in position. As the pawl 10 is brought into contact with the teeth the lever being in its lowermost position the pawl 22 will be drawn from the teeth by means of the wire 25. As the lever is raised to lower the bar the wire 25 will again force the pawl 22 into engagement with the teeth, thereby locking the bar until the lever is again in position for lowering the same. In order to secure various ad- "ustments for o eratin the lever the erforations 15 are provided in the lever and the links 16 may be connected by means of the pin passing through any of the perforations. so
I-Iaving fully described the invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a mechanical movement the combination with a guide and a toothed bar operating therein, of aplate mounted in the guide, a link connected to said plate, an operating lever supported by said link, a pawl pivotally connected to said plate and lever adapted to engage the toothed bar.
2. In a mechanical movement the combination with a guide and toothed bar operating therein, of a plate secured to the guide, a link connected to said plate, an operating lever supported by said link, a pawl. connected to the plate and lever and engaging with the toothed bar, a rotatable shaft secured to said plate and link, a second pawl adapted to engage the toothed bar, and
means connecting the second pawl and rotatable shaft.
3. In a mechanical movement, the combination with a guide and a toothed bar operating therein, a plate mounted in said guide,
link secured to the plate, an operating lever supported by said link, a pawl pivotally connected to'the plate and lever engaging with the toothed bar, a second pawl adapted to engage with the toothed bar, a rotatable shaft secured to tile plate and link,
means for adjusting the rotatable shaft, and
means connecting the second pawl and rotatable shaft.
4. In a mechanical movement the combination with a guide and atoothedbzzr operating therein, of a plate secured to the guide,

6. In a mechanical movement the combination with a guide and a toothed bar slidably mounted in the guide, of a plate piv otally secured to the'guide, a pawl pivotally connected to the plate, a lever pivotally connected to the pawl, a link connecting the plate and lever, a rotatable shaft secured to the link and plate, means for rotating the shaft, a second pawl secured to the guide, and meansconnecting the second pawl and rotatable shaft.
7 In a mechanical movement the combination with a guide and a toothed bar slidable in the-guide, of a plate pivotally mounted in the guide, a pawl pivotally connected toothed bar, a lever pivotally connected to the pawl, a link connecting the lever and plate, a rotatable shaft connected to the link and plate and provided with a bifurcated extension, a threaded bolt passing through the shaft and engaging the plate, a second pawl pivotally. connected to the guide and adapted to engage'thebar, and means connecting the second pawl and bifurcated eX- tension on the shaft.
8. In a mechanical movement the combination with a guide and a toothed bar slidable' therein, of a. plate pivotally mounted within the guide, a curved projection secured on the plate, a pawlpivotally connected to the plate, a lever pivotally con nected to the .pawl,a link connecting the plate and lever, a rotatable shaft secured to the link and plate, a threaded bolt passing through the shaft and adapted to engage the curved projection on the plate, a second pawl pivotally connected to the guide and adapted to engage the toothed bar, and flexible means connecting the second pawl and rotatable shaft. 7
9. In a mechanical movement the combination with a guide and a toothed bar slidable therein, of a plate pivotally mounted within the guide, a curved projection on the plate, a pawl pivotally connected to the to the' plate and adapted-to engage the plate, a lever provided with a plurality of perforations pivotally connected to the pawl, a'link connected to the lever and plate, a shaft rotatably connected to the plate, a threaded bolt passing through the shaft and adapted to engage the projection on the plate, a second pawl pivotally connected to the guide and adapted to engage the bar, and a flexible connectionconnected to the second pawl and rotatable shaft.
10. In a mechanical movement the combination with a guide and a toothed bar slidable therein, a pair of plates pivotally mounted within the guide,'a pawl pivotally mounted between the plates, a lever pivotally connected to the pawl, a pair of links connecting the lever and plates, a shaft rotatably mounted between the plates, a second pawl pivotally connected to the guide, and flexible means connecting the said second pawl and rotatable shaft.
11. In a mechanical movement the combination with a guide and a toothed bar slidable therein, of a pair of plates mounted in the guide, curved projections secured to connected to the guide and adapted to engage the toothed bar, and a flexible connection between the second pawl and bifurcated extension of the rotatable shaft.
