i M 4 6 L gi EDMUND MORRIS, .OF GEANDRAPIDS, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNCR 'lO WILMARTl-I SHOW CASE COMPANY, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN,
A CORPORATION OF MICHIGAN.
METHOD FOR REMOVABLY SETTING GLASS PLATES.
Application filed June 14, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, EDMUND Mom-us, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of ll lichigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Methods for Remov'ably Setting Glass Plates; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the an to which it appertains to make and use the same.
lrly invention relates to improvements for removably setting glass plates or panels in show cases, and more particularly to a means for securely, yet detachably setting and holding in place the glass plates or panels used in so called frame show cases and similar structures, and its object is to provide means whereby, when a glass plate or panel has once been fitted to and set in its proper position in the frame work of a case it may, if desired, be repeatedly removed and replaced and it will when so removed and replaced, always fit snugly into the place and position where it was first fitted and set, doing away with all looseness and the necessity of subsequent fitting and fixing into position.
While my improved methods is not limited to use in so called, knock down constructions, it is particularly adapted to such construction, that is, in show cases which are erected at the manufactory, but which are then disassembled and shipped in such disassembled or knock down condition, as will more fully appear by reference to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1, shows a transverse section of a corner post or other portion of the frame work of a show case which is recessed for and adapted to receive an edge of the glass plates or panels of a show case, with two of such glass plates or panels in constructional position, also showing suitable clamp for holding the same in place, said figure also illustrating my improved method for providing a closely fitting seat or bed in the frames for the edgesof said glass plates; Fig. 2, is a plan view of the spring edged strip which I employfor holding the glass plates or panels in place for the double form of post or frame shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3, shows a transverse sect1on of a post Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 8, 1916..
Serial No. 34,128.
or portion of the frame work of a show case, and the spring edged strip of the forms used where only one plate or panel of glass is to be secured; and Fig. 4, is a plan view of the spring edged strip which I use in connection with the form of st or frame work shown in Fig. 3.
Like numerals refer to like parts in all the figures.
1, represents the corner post or any part of the frame work of a show case which is adapted to receive and hold the edge of the glass plates or panels; 2, are such glass plates or panels; 3, is a spring edged member held in operative position by the screws l, for holding the glass plates or panels in constructional position in the frame of the show case.
In erecting a show case, utilizing my improved method therein, 1 first set up the complete frame work and fit everything to its place. I then supply two or more of the recessed angles of the frame work, which are intended to receive the edges of the glass plates or panels, with a requisite quantity of a plastic material 5; the edges of the glass plates or panels 2, which are to be beveled as at 2, are then pressed into place as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, after which any surplus of the said plastic material which may be forced out beyond the edges of the frame work when the plates are embedded is removed, and the glass plates or panels are allowed to remain in said position until the said plastic material has sufficiently hardened so that it will retain its form and position. After said plastic material has once set so that it will retain its form and position, the glass plate or panel and the frame are marked so that the said plate may be returned to the same place and position in which it was first set, after which such plate may be repeatedly removed and replaced, as occasion may require, and such plate will always thereafter fit into its place as snugly and perfectly as when originally embedded into place in the plastic material.
It will be found of quite an advantage to dust or paint the edges of the glass plates or panels where they come in contact with the said plastic mater1al when they are first embedded therein, with talc or some similar substance, so that in. the first removal of the plate or panel the plastic material will not adhere to the same. The plastic lit) material to be used may be any one of several well known substances, viz: putty, preferably prepared so that it will set and dry rapidly; plaster of Paris; modeling; compound; various waxes prepared with a hardener; etc.
I do not wish to be understood as limiting my improved method to the use of any particular form of plastic material, as there are a great number of substances Well known, which may be employed with equal good results and advantage.
My invention consists essentially in beveling two or more of the edges of the glass plates or panels, forcing the edges of such plates which are so beveled into a bed of plastic material which has been previously placed in the angle of the frame which is intended and adapted to receive the edge of such plates or panels, permitting said plastic material to set or dry so that the same will hold its formand position when the glass plate or panel is removed, so that said plastic material will form a permanent beveled edged bed or seat to removably receive and hold the glass plate or panel in a snug and firm position. After the plastic material has once set or dried, the glass plates or panels may then, as occasion may require, be easily, quickly and repeatedly removed or replaced, and yet the same will always fit closely and snugly in the original position in which it was set.
The fitting and setting of glass plates or panels of show cases into constructional position, so as to prevent and avoid their being loose and shaky in their frames is a diflicult problem, but by utilizing my present invention, the fitting of such glass plates or panels may be easily, effectively and cheaply accomplished, and when the plastic material employed has once become fully set, the glass plates or panels serve to brace and strengthen the frames, so that the whole structure becomes more firm and rigid, thus very materially reducing the liability of breakage of the glass plates or panels as a required to be beveled, that is, any two of i the edges which form a right angle, and the said plastic material is to be supplied in the angles of the frames to receive such beveled edges, the other two edges of the plate or panel may rest directly on the framework. Or again, three of the'edges may be beveled and the fourth edge rest on the frame, or, all of the edges may be beveled. The essentials of my invention being embodied in beveling a sufficient number of the edges of the plate and supplying a plastic material bed for such beveled edges, so that the plate or panel may be firmly held in its frame with all of its edges in contact with either the frame or the plastic material bed, and yet such plate, by rea son of two or more of its edges being beveled, may be easily removed from its frame and again replaced in its original position without subsequent fitting or fixing to snugly and firmly replace it in such position in which it was originally set.
I claim:
A method for detachably and tightly securing a plate or panel of glass in a frame, comprising; beveling two or more of the several edges of the glass plate, providing the angles of the recesses of the frame which are adapted to receive the beveled edges of said glass plate with a plastic material which will harden, embedding the said beveled edges of said glass plate into said plastic material, leaving said plate in said position until said plastic material has hardened, and providing detachable means for holding the said glass plate in constructional position in its frame.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature to the foregoing specifications and claim.
EDMUND MORRIS.
