This invention relates to gas burnerssuch as are used for heating purposes and has for its object to provide a novel gas burner which will not back fire. r I 'accomplish this object by introducing the `gas into the burner passage of the burner tube between the ends thereof and providing meansfor dividing the iiow of gas into two streams and directing the two streams in opposite directions. I iind that with such an arrangement there is no danger that the burner will back fire.
In order to give a proper understanding of my invention I have illustrated a selected embodiment thereof which will now be described, it being understood, however, that the shape and constructional features of the burner may be varied in many ways without departing from the invention.
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a burner embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line m-m, Fig. 3; Fig. 3 is a section on the line y-y, Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a section on the line a-a, Fig. 2.
My improved burner, which is provided with the usual burner passage having burner openings situated at intervals along its length, is provided with means for delivering the gas to said passage at a point intermediate of its ends and is also provided with a deflecting device which divides the stream of gas that is delivered to the pas.- sage andy directs or diverts the two parts of said stream in opposite directions and toward opposite ends of the burner passage.
`In the device herein illustrated the burner passage has a general U-shape, although this is not at all essential to the invention as the latter might be embodied in a burner having a straight burner passage.
The burner passage is shown at 1 and is formed in a U-shaped burner member 2, said passage having a plurality of burner openings 3 communicating therewith as usual in gas burners. The gas is delivered to the burner passage through a delivery "Specification of Letters Patent.

pipe 4 which has associated therewith the usual air mixer 5 into which the gas is delivered from a pipe 6 through a tip7. This air mixer may be of any suitable or usual construction. The delivery pipe 4 comf munioates with the burner passage 1 intermediate of its ends so that the gas delivered from the pipe 4 will flow through the `passage 1 toward opposite ends thereof. I have also provided the burner passage 1 with a dei'lector 8 situated to divide the stream of gas issuing from the pipe 4 and to deiect the two portions thereof toward opposite ends of the burnerpassage; In the embodiment of the invention herein shown the burner member 2 is provided with a boss 9 `having a port 10 which leads into the burner passage 1 at right angles thereto, the de- Hector 8 being situated opposite the port 10 so as to bisect the stream of gas passing through the port and deflect the two parts thereof in opposite directions, as shown by the arrows in Fig. 3. The delivery pipe 4 is screw-threaded to the boss 9. I propose to make the deflector 8 of such a length that it will extend into the port 10 a sulcient distance to divide the stream of gas into two portions before it passes into the burner passage 1 as clearly seen in Fig. 3. There are no burner openings 3 communieating with the inlet port 10 and therefore the gas cannot escape from the burner passage until after it has been completely deflected into the portion of said passage beyond the defiector. I have found from experiments that a burner will not back fire when it has this constructiony wherein the gas is delivered into the burner passage intermediate of its ends and the deflector 8 is employed for dividing the stream of gas and deflecting the two parts in opposite directions.
Although my invention is applicable to any burner regardless of the particular shape of the burner member, yet I have herein shown it as it might beemployed in a burner having two independent burner passages 1 and 100, both of which have a general U-shape and are incorporated in the same burner element 2. The burner passage 100 receives its supply through a pipe 40 which communicates with the passage 100 through a port 101 and the passage 100 is provided with a deflector 80 adjacent the end of the port 101, which deflector divides the stream of gas issuing from the port and deiects it toward opposite ends of the passage 100. The pipe 40 will also be provided with an air-mixing chamber 5.01:' usual construction.
While I have herein illustrated a selected y embodiment of my invention, I do not wish tov be limited to the constructional features shown.
I claim: Y
1. A gas burner having a continuous U-shaped burner passage provided with burner openings, a vgas inlet port leading intosaid passage between the ends thereof, and a deilector extending from said passage into the inlet port to bisect the stream of gas as it passes through said port and to deflect the two portions of said stream toward opposite ends of the burner passage, said burner openings being situated. only in the portions of the passage beyond the deflector. 2. A burner element having a general U-shape and provided with two separate Copies of this patent may be obtained for U-shaped burner passages, each' having burner openings and a gas'inlet port leading thereto' between its ends, and means in each passage adjacent the port leading thereto to divide the stream of gas passing through the port into two parts which are deflected toward opposite ends of the burner passage.
3.A burner eomprisinga casting having a pair of U-shaped gas passages extending side by side and having burner openings to deliver substantially in one direction and a pair of gas inlets communicating each with one of said passages at apoint intermediate the ends thereof, one of said inlets having a port extending below one of said passages.
