Description

H. L. BRUEN. FLY KILLING DEVICE. APPLICATION FILED Nov. 18. 1914.
HENRY [BRQEN wi t Memo HENRY L. BRUEN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
FLY-KILLING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 1, 1916.
Application filed November 18, 1914. Serial No. 872,825.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY L. BRUEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fly-Killing Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to an improved fly killing implement and has for its primary object to provide a light and simple device of this character which may be employed for striking and killing flies without danger of injuring tables, chairs, or other articles of furniture upon which the insects may happen to alight.
It is a more particular object of the invention to provide a device of the above character embodying a flexible metal blade or plate covered or coated upon both sides 5 with a rubber solution.
It is an additional object of my invention to provide a fly killing implement which may be readily manipulated and is capable of manufacture at comparatively small cost.
With the,ab0ve and other objects in View, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described,
claimed, and illustrated in the acoompanying drawing, wherein- Figure 1 is an edge elevation of my invention, a portion of the rubber coating being broken away; Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a plan view. 1
Referring in detail to the drawing, 5 designates a flexible steel blade or plate which is preferably of rectangular form and gradually restricted or tapered at one end as at 6 for attachment to a suitable handle 7 which may be formed of either metalor wood as preferred. The metal blade 5"is preferably formed of sheet steel and provided with a multiplicity of openings 8.
The opposite faces of this blade as well ast-he edges thereof are coated with a rubber solution 9, said solution however, not filling the openings 8 so as to obstruct passage of air therethrough.
In the use of my improved implement, it will be understood that the handle 7 is grasped in the hand and the rubber coated blade swung or wielded through the air and directed to strike and kill a fly or other insect. Devices of an analogous nature which are not provided with the protecting coating of rubber or other resilient material often seriously injure or mar the finish of tables, chairs, and other articles of furniture. It is manifest that by means of the present invention, this objection is overcome as the rubber coated blade which is itself capable of flexing, will rebound when the article on which the fly has chanced to alight, is struck. At the same time however, in view of the simple construction of the invention, the manufacturing cost thereof is but slightly greater than the ordinary wire mesh implement which is commonly employed for this purpose.
It is to .be understood that in carrying out my invention, the metal blades may be made in various shapes and sizes and attached to the handle in any preferred manner.
What I claim is: v A device for killing insects consisting of a flexible, foraminated metal plate of uniform thickness throughout its area, a coating of soft, elastic, vulcanizable material entirely covering all exposed surfaces and the edges of said plate but leaving the passages through the openings in the plate unobstructed, said coating also being of uniform thickness throughout its area, and a suitable handle connected to one end of said plate. a
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in the presence. of two witnesses.
