WILLIAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and-useful Improvements in Necktie and Ribbon Pressing Devices; and'I do-declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such aswill enable others skilled in the art to which it apper-tainsto make and use the: same.
My invention relates broadly to improvements in pressing devices and more particularly'to an article of this character which is designed to press neckties and ribbons;-
The object of the inventionis to-provide a comparativelysimple device which will effectively remove all wrinkles from neckties or ribbons and whichr'nay be'simply a'nd in expensively manufactured and marketed.-
With the above and minor ObJGCtS in view,
the invention resides in certain novel features of construction and combination herein described and claimed and shown in the drawings wherein Figure 1 is a front elevation of a device constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a rear elevation thereof; Figs. 3 and 4 are end views;'Fig. 5 is a transverse section as seen on the line 55 of Fig. 1; Fig. 6 is a bottom plan view; and Fig. 7 is a detail vertical section as seen along the plane of the line 77 of Fig. 6.
In these drawings, constituting a part of this application, the numeral 1 designates an upright rectangular frame in the upright side bars of which a pair of horizontal stub shafts 2 are revolubly mounted, one of said shafts being provided with an appropriate form of crank 3. Rigidly mounted on the shafts 2, is a cylindrical roller or reel 4, this reel having a longitudinal groove 5 in its periphery and one wall of this groove being provided with a clamping strip 6 which cowhich is movable radially in said groove and which is carried by a pair of curved spring arms 8, the latter being secured at their free ends to the opposite end portions of the reel. These end portions of the roller are preferably reduced in size, where the spring arms 8 contact therewith in order that said arms may lie flush with the periphery thereof.
The strip 6 and the clamping bar 7 constitute means for connecting one end of a tie or ribbon to the reel 4, said bar being capablepf being moved outwardly against the tenslonof the springarms 8'by the provision of aheaded pin 9,w'hich slidesywithin an opening; formed diametrically through the reel.- By pushing the head of this button inwardly,thebar will be pushed-outwardly, thereby allowing. the free'end of the tie or ribbon tobe inserted beneath the same;
I Projectingioutwardly from the upper ends ofthe sidebarsof' the frame 1,is a pair of arms l0'whose outer ends are'bent toform coil-springs 11, the f-reeends of the latter being,: continued downwardly in the formof movablearms' 12-.- The'xfree ends of these arms 12 are rigidly secured to the opposite e'ndsof a pressingibar" 13 which lies parallel with the reelv and contacts therewith, when no article is clamped within the device. It will= be' understood that the tension of the coilsprings 11 isexerted to normally move this bar 13 inwardly toward the reel.
Rlsing through one end of the lower side bar of the frame 1, is an upright bolt 14 whose lower end is formed integrally with one end of a coil 15, the other end of said coil being continued to form a horizontal guide arm 16 which lies directly beneath said bar and which normally has its free end seated between the parallel arms of a U-shaped clip 17 which depends from the opposite end of said bar, said free end being preferably turned downwardly as shown.
Adjustable longitudinally on the arm 16 is a pair of guide rollers 18 whose upper edges are adapted to travel in a groove 19 formed in the lower side of the bottom bar of the frame. 7
With the parts constructed as above described, one end of a tie orribbon T may be inserted beneath the clamping bar 7 this article being then trained beneath the pressing bar 13 and beneath the lower bar of the frame, the guide arm 16 having been previously swung downwardly out of the clip 17 as seen in dotted lines in Fig. 1, and laterally to the position seen in dotted lines in Fig. 6. This arm is then again swung to its normal position and the guide rollers 18 are adjusted longitudinally thereon until they contact with the opposite edges of the article. The crank 3 is now rotated, thus winding the tie or ribbon upon the reel 4 during which operation, the pressing. bar 13 contacts yieldably with the article, thus pressing all wrinkles and creases, which will be entirely removed if the article is allowed to remain upon the device for a number of hours.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that a comparatively simple device has been provided for carrying out the objects of the invention, yet that the efliciencv thereof will not be impaired by such simplicity.
I claim;
1. A device of the class described comprising a cylindrical reel having a longitudinal groove in its periphery, a clamping bar in said groove, a pair of curved spring arms secured to the periphery of said reel and to the ends of said bar, a transverse pin sliding diametrically through the reel and abutting the under side of said clamping bar, whereby it may be forced outwardly, and a pressing device adjacent said reel.
2. The combination with a reel upon which an article to be pressed is to be wound, and a pressing device adjacent said reel, of a fixed and a movable guide bar lying parallel to each other and between which the article to be pressed is adapted to be passed, the movable bar being pivotally connected to the fixed bar, means to normally retain the two bars in fixed relation, and a pair of stops on the movable bar, one of said stops being adjustable longitudinally on said movable bar.
8. A device of the class described comprising a rectangular frame, a winding roller rotatably mounted therein and having an actuating crank and means for the attachment of the object to be Wound, and a guide bar lying parallel to one side of the frame and to the axis of the roller, said bar having one end anchored to the aforesaid side of the frame and being coiled adjacent said end whereby to impart resiliency thereto, to allow the bar to yield toward and away from the frame.
