To all whom it may concern 7 Be it known that I, ERNEST KARL, acitizen of the United States, residing at Lit ch field, in the county of Litchfield and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Tympan-Gage, of. which. the following is a specification. g
The present invention appertains to tympan gages for printing presses, and aims to provide a novel and improved appliance adapted to be employed upon the platen of a printing press for properly holding the sheets whereby they receive the impressions regularly. I I It is the object of the invention to pro *vide a tympan gage whichqis adjustable to hold various sizes of sheets, and to hold the sheets at various positions upon the platen, the device being comparatively simple, practical and inexpensive in construction, being readily applicable to various printing presses, and serving its oflice in a thoroughly efficient, convenient "and practical manner.

Each of the stops 1 1 is bent 5 froma' bla'nkof sheet metal, and comprises I a body 13 resting slidably upon the strip 8, and having a lip 11 at one end bent back or reflexed under one edge of the strip 8 while the other end of the body 13 has a pair of lips 15 which are bent back or refiexed under the other edge of the strip 8 to grip the strip and hold the stop in position. The lips 14 and 15 are received by the rabbets 8 of the strip 8, whereby the stops 11 will not project below the lower surface of the strip, which would be objectionable. The side edges of the body 13 are provided with notches 16, forming flanges 17 and the flanges 17 are bent upward, to provide finger pieces which may be readilygrasped by the fingers for shifting the stop along the gage strip. The body 13 has a tongue 18 projecting from between the lips 15, at the respective end of the body 13, and the tongue 18 is bent back over the body 13, and is bowed, as seen in Fig. 8. The tongue 18 has a head or enlarged portion 19 at its free end, which is bent upwardly, and the head 19 has a pair of feet 20 at the opposite sides. of the tongue 18, which are adapted to rest upon the platen 1. The head 19 has a lip 21 at its upper edge, which is bent angularly away from the tongue 18, whereby the lip 21 overhangs the edge of the sheet, while the edge of the sheet rests against the feet or stops 20. The side gage 12 is carried by a slide which is mounted for movement upon the strip 8, and this slide is bent from a sheet metal blank, and embodies a body 22 resting slidably upon the strip 8, and having a pair of lips 23 at each end, and the lips '23 are bent back or reflexed under the edges of the strip 8, and are received by the rabbets 8 of the strip. The body 22 has a portion 24: projecting from each end between the respective lips 23, and each portion 24: has lips 25 at its side edges bent back upwardly. The body 22 has a pair of notches 26 at each side edge, and the notches 26 form flanges 27 which are bent upward to provide finger pieces whereby the slide may be readily moved upon the strip 8.
The side gage proper embodies a strip 28, cut from sheet metal, and having a portion 29 at one end curved to one side, and the curved end portion 29 of the strip 28 is provided with a head or enlarged portion 30 which is bent upward. The head or portion 30 is provided with a pair. of feet 31 at the opposite sides of the end portion 29 of the strip 28, and the feet 31 are adapted to rest upon the platen 1. The head 30 has a lip 32 "at its upper edge which is bent angularly relative to the head 30,'to overhang the edge of the sheet, while the edge of the sheet rests against the teeth or stops 81.
In use, when the device is properly applied to the platen, the stops 11 may be adjusted along the strip 8 as well as the side slots for the reception of securing elements I and the strip 8 may be adjusted to the position desired. It is thus possible to adjust the device for holding various sizes of sheets, and for holding the sheets at various positions upon the platen. The sheet rests against the feet 20 and 31 of the stops and side gage, respectively, under the lips 21 and It is also to be noted that the strip or shank 28 of the gage 12 may be slid relative to the slide, since this strip 28 rests slidably upon the body 22 and portion 24; of the slide, under the lips 25.
Attention is directed to the fact, that the open longitudinal slot 10 in one end of the strip 8 allows the said end of the strip to be moved by longitudinal movement into engagement with the right hand bolt 6, while the lateral slot 9 at the other end of the strip 8 allows the last mentioned end of the strip to be moved by a lateral or swinging motion into and out of engagement with the left hand bolt 6. The slot 10 allows the bolts 6 to be spaced farther or less apart, since the right hand bolt 6 may be disposed at any point within the slot 10, without disturbing the position of the strip 8 when it is clamped to the guides.
The other advantages and attributes of the invention are thought to be obvious from the foregoing, taken in connection with the drawing, without further comment being necessary.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. In a device of the character described, a pair of angle iron guides applicable to the side edges of a platen, the guides having depending flanges provided with T-shaped carried by the side edges of the platen, the other flanges of the guides having longitudinal slots, elements slidable in the last mentioned slots, a strip engageable with said elements to extend across the platen, and gage elements slidable upon the strip.
2. In a device of the character described, a pair of guides applicable to the side edges of a printing press platen, a pair of adjust able clamping elements carried by the guides, a strip adapted to extend across the platen and having a longitudinal open slot at one end for the reception of one clamping element, and a transverse slot adjacent its other end for the reception of the other clamping element, and gage elements slidably mounted upon the strip.
3.
