Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIGE.v
JOST STENGEL, OF CROTON, AND CHARLES C. DAVEY, OF BIG PRAIRIE, AS-
SIGN ORS TO HENRY B. HERSHBERGER AND CHARLES C. DAVEY, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN CORN-HUSKERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 117,011, dated July 11, 1871.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, J 0ST STENGEL, of Croton, and CHARLES C. DAvEv, of Big Prairie, in the county of Newaygo and State of Michigan,
- have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corn-Huskers; and we do hereby declare that the following` is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of refrence marked thereon which form a part of this specication.
-The nature of our invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a corn-husker, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which our invention appertains to make and use the same, we will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l -is a perspective view of the cornhusker, and Fig. 2 is an enlarged bottom view of the knife or cutter.
A represents a block of wood or other suitable material, curved, as shown, so as to fit the palm of the hand when partially closed, and the outer surface thereof' is, at the outer edge, provided with two depressions for the first two fingers of the hand. Along the upper edge of the block A is a projecting flange, c, through which is a slot. A similar slot is made in the lower edge of the block, and in these two slots is secured arubber band, B, to pass over the iirst two fingers. A rubber loop, C, is also secured at the inner end of the block to pass the thumb through. D represents the knife or cutter, made of a steel plate, substantially in the form shown in Fig. 2, and serrated along the cutting-edge on the under side from 4 to 7. The rear end of this cutter is rounded, as shown, while the front end forms the point b. The cutter D is pivoted on the upper edge of the block by a screw through its rear end, and it is adjusted in any desired position to suit the operator by means of a screw, c, passing Athrough an oblique or curved slot, d, in the cutter, near the front end, said screw passing into the block.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The cutter D, constructed, as described, with point b, the cutting-edge serrated on the under side, and with the slot d for the purpose of adjustment on the block A, substantially as herein set forth.
2. The combination of the block A, band B, loop C, and adjustable cutter D, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own invention we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
' JOST STENGEL.
CHARLES C. DAVEY. Witnesses:
