To all whom it may com'crn Be it known that I, ii'uoiis'r (l. Biscuorr, a citizen of the United States. residing at Chico, in the county of Butte, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ilydrocarbon-Bm"ners: and I do declare the followii'lg to be a full, clear, and exact. description of the same. reference being had to the accompanying drawings. and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this application. This invention relates to improvements in liquid fuel burners and particularly to a hvdrocarbon burner adapted for using distillate and similar fuel oils, the object of the invention being to produce a novel retort for gasifying fuel in combination with anew arrangement of storage retorts and burners.
A further object of the invention is to produce a simple and inexpensive device and yet one which will be exceedingly eiiective for the purposes for which it is designed.
These objects, I accomplish by means of such structure and relative arrangement of parts as will fully appear by a perusal of the following specification and claim.
In the drawings similar characters of reference'indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
Figure 1 is plete burner,-for cook stoves, etc. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on a line XX of Fig. 1. Fig. s1 is a sectional view taken on a line YY of Fig. 1.
Referring now more particularly to the characters of reference on the drawings, my invention embodies primarily a starting 01' dripping pan 1. Disposed across this dripping pan 1 are suitable supporting brackets 2. Mounted on the brackets 2 at each end of the pan 1 is a pair of storage gas receptacles, those atone end being designated by the numerals 3 and 1, and those at the other end being designated by the numerals 5 and 6.
The numeral 7 designates the gasifying retort which is composed of an integral member divided into four chambers, 8, 9, 10 and 11 respectively, the member 7 being cut away along a portion of its length to form spaces 12 between the said four chambers. In practice the retort 7 is set above the pan 1 and to one side thereof. Each of Specification of Letters Patent.

the chambers 8, 9, 10 and 11 respectively'has an independent fuel inlet pipe designated in the drawings as 13, 14, 15 and 16 respectively, each of said inlet pipes having a control valve 13, 14?, 15 and 16 respectively whereby the admission of the fuel into any one of the chambers of the retort may be controlled for a purpose as will appear.
As will be noted, the inlet pipes just described communicate with one end of their respective chambers. Thus the fuel is admitted through the pipe 14 into one end of the chamber 9 and passes through said retort where it is gasified with the heat applied against it in a manner as Willap'pear, which gas passes out the other end of said chamber 9 through a pipe 17 which communicates with a storage gas receptacle 5 where I the gas can accumulate in a quantity and be used therefrom through a nozzle '18 which throws theflame against a spreader plate/19 clamped to the pipe 16 above the nozzle 18.
The fuel admitted'through the pipe 13 into the chamber 8 is likewise gasified in the said. chamber 8. It then passes out through a pipe 20 connected with the. other end of the chamber 8 which pipe 20 leads to the storage receptacle 6. A vertical outlet pipe 21 leads upwardly from the end of the receptacle 6 and is provided with an elhow 22 at its upper end connected into which is a discharge nozzle 23 directed in such a manner as to throw the flame of the ignited gas passing therethrough directly against the retort 7 and more particularly directly into the spaces 12 between the various chembers of said retort, the edges 12 of said spaces 12, being flared outwardly as shown in Figs. 1 and 3 so as to aid in directing the flames into the spaces 12 and at the same time give a greater heating surface for the various chambers.
As will be noted the discharge nozzle 18 forms a central burner while the eflect of filler 25 so as to aciilas a filter for the gas passing therethroug 4 to segregate. the carbon from the gas, and the members 21 and 22 are likewise filled with this asbestos filler as shown clearly in Fig. 4.
As is shown in the drawings, each complete burner consists of a duplication of structure on each end and therefore the fuel enters through a pipe into the chamber 10 at one end passes through said chamber where it is gasified, which gas passes out the other end through a pipe 27 and thence into the storage receptacle 3, which it passes out through a discharge nozzle 28 located under the spreader 29 clamped as at 30 to the pipe 13. The fuel passing through the pipe 16, enters the chamber at 11 at one end, passes through said chamber where it is gasified, the gas passing out a pipe 31 at the other end of the chamber 11, which pipe 31 connects with the storage receptacle From this receptacle 4 a vertical discharge pipe 32 extends upwardly and is provided with an elbow having a discharge nozzle 3s constructed similarly to the nozzle 23 and disposed in a similar manner to discharge against the retort 7 all for the purpose previously described in connection with the nozzle 23. Said nozzle 3 and its connections are likewise filled with the filtering substance to removethe carbon from the gas. Each of the chambers of the retort 7 and each of the storage receptacles is provided with a removable plug at each end as shown by the numeral 35, these plugs to be removed for the purpose of cleaning out the various chambers and retorts.
From the description here given'it will be seen that the retort 7 will receive the benefit of all the heatderived from the combustion of the gases. and at the same time all the pipe connections will be subject to the direct heat of the flames which will tend '1 0 highly gasiiy the fuel and at the same time leave the flames as spread by the spreader mei'nbers 19 and 29 free to pla directly against the top of the stove, while the flames from the other discharge members and, 34: will pass through the-spaces 12 in the retort 7 and thence heat the balance of the stove. One of the main and essential features of my improved burner is that of having the gasifying retort and the storage receptacle separate and spaced one above the other respectively so that practically nothing except clean gas free from carbon deposits will be carried by the storage receptacle and at the same time the storage receptacle provides a pressure equalizing chamber for its jet.
From the foregoing description it will be readily seen that I have produced such a device as substantially fulfills the object of the invention as set forth herein. 1 M lV'hile this specification sets forth in det ail the present and preferred construction of the device, still in practice such deviations from such detail may be reso ted to as do not form a departure from the spirit of. the invention as defined by the appended claim. Having thus described my invention what 1 claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A device of the character described comprising the combination of a plurality of storage receptacles, a gasifying retort disposed above and to one side of said storage receptacles, said gasifying retort being divided into a number of chambers equal to the number of said storage receptacles, an independent fuel supply pipe communicating with each chan'ibcr, a discharge pipe leading from each chamber to one of said storage receptacles, each storage receptacle hav ng an independent discharge nozzle, a portion of said discharge nozzles extending vertically and the balance extending vertically and then at right angles to throw the discharge directly against-said gasifying retort, as described.
