To all whom it m (by concern:
Be it known that I, CARL A. JOHNSON, a subject of the King of Sweden, residing at the city of Jamestown, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas-Burners, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
The invention relates to burners for liquid fuel, and the object of the improvement is to provide a simple, convenient and eflicient burner for oils, particularly petroleum, in which a fluid is so cont-rolled that it is easily heated and turned to gas and the ignition of the gas provides the heat for the continuous vaporizing of the oil; and the invention consists in the combination and arrangement of the parts as described in this specification and the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a top plan view of the burner, showing the position of the connected pipes in dotted lines. Figs. 2 and 3 are side elevations of the burner, showing the arrangement of the connected pipes. Fig. 4 is a sectional view at line X X in Fig. 3, showing the arrangement of the generating and distributing chambers within the burner and the connective passages. Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view of the burner at line Y Y in Fig. 4; and Fig. 6 is a sectional view of the burner at line Z Z in Fig. 1 at right angles to the view shown in Fig. 5, showing the construction and arrangement of the different parts of the burner.
Like numerals of reference refer to corresponding parts in the several views.
The numeral 10 designates the supply pipe which has thereon the fuel cup 11 for heating and starting the burner. The upper end of the pipe 10 is connected to the V or U-shaped pipe 12 at its lowest point. The upper ends of the V or U-shaped pipe 12 are connected through'suitable openings to the opposite sides of the generating chamber 13 of the burner top 14. The burner top 14 has the circular partition 15 therein with passages 16 therethrough for the vapor from the generating chamber 13 to pass through. The top 14 is preferably made of cast metal with the circular sides, the upper edges of which are turned inward Specification of Letters Patent.

slightly as shown at 17. The circular partition 15 is slightly higher than the under side of the turned edge 17. A central standard or stud 18 is provided having a tapped hole for a screw. A sheet metal disk 20 is sprung beneath the outer edge 17 and the spring of the metal holds the disk 20 firmly against the top of the standard 18 and partition 15, the screw 19 firmly holding all the parts in place and forming a vapor tight joint between the top 20 and the turned edge 17. A. second V or U-shaped pipe 21 which is smaller than the V or U- shaped pipe 12 is connected to the top 14 within the distributing chamber 22 around the standard 18 and within the partition 15. If the oil is not thoroughly vaporized in the generation chamber 13, this will be accomplished in the chamber 22. The nozzle or orifice 23 for the gas is inserted in the pipe 21 on its upper side within the V or U-shaped pipe 21. Said V or U-shaped pipe 21 extends down to the exact distance which will produce the hottest flame around the top 14 to thereby generate the gas in the quickest manner and produce a burner of the greatest power.
In order to confine and direct the flames of the burning gas directly upon the top 14 a cylindrical sheet metal band 24 is attached to the outer sides of the V-shaped pipe 12 and extends up nearly to a level with the turned edge 17. The upper portion of band 24 preferably flaring out slightly to produce a flaring flame. The band 24 confines the flames upon the top 14 and also directs them upward upon the receptacle or article to be heated.
In using the burner a portion of the oil is placed in the cup 11 and ignited, thereby heating all parts of the burner. The oil is then turned onto the burner through the supply pipe 10 and the generating of the gas is started by the heated metal and the flame from the oil cup 11 so that the gas may be ignited at the nozzle 28 and thereafter keeps a continuous generation of gas from the oil which passes up the two sides of the pipe 12 to the generating chamber 13 where the gas is generated and passes through the passages 16 into the distributing chamber 22, thence down through the arms of the pipe 21 to the nozzle 23, thereby producing a simple and convenient burner which is easy of ignition and may be easily cleaned should the chambers or passages become foul in any .Way.
I claim as neW 1. In a liquid fuel burner, a supply pipe having a branching upper end, a burner connected to the upper ends of said branching supply pipe having a circular generating chamber around its outer portion and a central distributing chamber connected to said generating chamber, a second branching pipe connected to said distributing chamber Within the branching upper end of said supply pipe, and a burner nozzle Within said second branching pipe beneath said burner. 2. In a liquid fuel burner, a metal top having an outer generating chamber and an inner distributing chamber and connective passages therebetween, a V-shaped pipe connected to the opposite sides of said generating chamber and to the supply pipe, a second V-shaped pipe connected to the opposite sides of said distributing chamber, a gas nozzle in the upper side and Within said sec ond V-shaped pipe and at a spaced distance beneath said top, and a metal shield around said burner at a spaced distance therefrom and supported thereon, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. In a liquid fuel burner, a cast metal top having a circular partition therewithin to form an outer generating chamber and an inner distributing chamber and passages therebetween, a central standard Within said distributing chamber, a sheet metal disk engaging beneath the outer rim of said top and held at the center by a screw in said standard to close said chambers, a V-shaped pipe connected to the opposite sides of said generating chamber, a supply pipe connected to said V-shaped pipe, a fuel cup on said supply pipe beneath said burner, a shield attached to said V-s'haped pipe on its outer sides and extending up a spaced distance around said burner, a second V-shaped pipe connected to'the opposite sides of said distributing chamber and extending down therefrom Within the first V-shaped pipe,
and a gas nozzle Within said second V- shaped pipe on its upper side, substantially F as and for the purpose speclfied.
