which the following isa specification.
The present invention relates to a door check, and has for one of its objects to proof the invention is better understood, the
same consists in the combination, arrangement and construction of parts hereinafter fully described,pointed out in the appended claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings,.it being understood that many changes may be made in the size and proportion of the several parts and detalls of construction within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
One of the many possible embodiments of the invention isfillustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of a portion of a door and door frame to which a door check constructed in accordance with the present invention isapplied, the parts being in position to hold the door closed; Fig. 2 is a section taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1;

Generally speaking, the invention relates to that type of door checks which comprise a link carried by the door jamb,- in combina- 29, that forms, as it were, a continuation of the opening 25, and extends a suitable distance beyond the outer face of the front plate 27, as clearly shown in Fig. 8 of the drawings. l/Vithin the lock casing is dis- 7 posed a sliding bolt 30, made of two sections 31 and 32, which are guided intheir movements by ledges 33 formed within the lock casing. The sections-of the bolt are connected by a lug 3 1, preferably, made integral with the section 31 and-projecting into a slot 35in the section 32. Owing to this arrangement, the section 31 of the bolt can be retracted without causing a movement of the section 32 thereof. However, if thelatter is retracted in a manner herein after described, the section 31 will be caused to move therewith. The purpose of this ar rangement will be described hereinafter. The section 31 of the bolt is under the action of springs 36 which are coiled upon stationary pins .37, and bear against the rear ledges 33 and an enlargement 38 upon the section 31 of the sliding bolt. To the door jamb is secured a base plate 56, the latter being disposed Within a suitably shaped mortise .in said jamb, and has pivoted thereto at 57 a link 58,'provided at its free end with a head 59. A longitudinal slot 60 is formed in the link, and through this slot is adapted to extend the hookshaped lug 39.
The operation of this device is-as follows: In use the sliding bolt is retracted by means of the lug 39, which will permit the head 59 of the link 58 to be passed through the apertures 29 and 26 in the projection 28 and the front plate 27, respectively. After this the lug 39 is released, and the door fully closed, by which operation the lug is inserted into the slot 60in the link, and the head 59 of the link caused to abut against the rear end-wall of the lock casing. The shoulder 39 of the lug 39 overlaps thus, the link58.
If now the catch 54 is turned so that it contacts with the shoulder of the bolt section 31, the sliding bolt is held permanently retracted and the door securely locked. As long as the catch is in this position, it is imthe door by use of a key from the outside. From the inside, obviously, the door can be easily opened by swinging the catch into the position shown in fulllines in Fig. 7 of the drawings, and

The front portion of the boltsection 31 overlies then partly the aperture 26 in the front plate of the lock casing. When the parts are in these positions, the link head 59 cannot pass through the apertures 26 and 29. The door can now be opened to a limited extent, that is to say until the head of the link comes into contact with the front portion of the bolt section 31.
If it is intended topermit the door to be opened by means of a key, the catch is swung to its position shown in full lines in Fig. 7 of the drawings. By turning the spindle 12 by a key in one or the other direction, .its arms 47 will engage with one or the other shoulder/l8, of the section 32 of the sliding bolt and retract bothbolt sections. The bolt is then held in retracted position and the door forced inward, whereby the link 58 will disengage itself from the lug 39 and slide through the apertures 29 and 26.
It is to be observed that, while herein the lock casing has been described as carried by the door and the link by thedoor jamb, the 7 jamb, of a base plate fastened to one of said-members, a link pivoted to said plate having a head upon its free end, a casing attached to the other one of said members having an outwardly extending projection, said projection, being provided with an aperture in alinement with and forming a continnation of an aperture in the front plate of sald casing, a sliding bolt within said casing made of two sections,- the front section of said bolt obstructing in its projected position the aperture in the front plate of said casing, said front section being adapted to slide independently of the rear section of the bolt but the retracting of the latter withdrawing also said front section, the head of said link being adapted to pass through said apertures when the locking bolt is retracted,
means upon said rear section for manually actuating said sliding bolt, means engaging said rear section adapted to be actuated by a key for retracting said bolt from outside, and a catch for holding said'sliding bolt in its retracted position.

The combination with a door and door jamb, of a base plate fastened to one of said members, a slotted link pivoted to said plate having a head upon its free end, a casing attached to the other one of said members having an outwardly extending projection, said projection being provided with an aperture in alinement with and forming a continuation of an aperture in the front plate of said casing, a sliding bolt within said casing obstructing in its projected position the aperture in the front plate of said casing, the head of said link being adapted to pass through said apertures when the locking bolt is retracted, a lug carried by said bolt projecting through a slot in the front plate of said casing, said lug being adapted to be seated in the slot in said link and serving also as the means by which the sliding bolt can be manually retracted, and a catch for holding said sliding bolt in its retracted position.
4. The combination with a door and door jamb, of a base plate fastened to one of said members, a slotted link pivoted to said plate having a head upon its free end, a casing attached to the other one of said members having an outwardly extending projection, said projection being provided with an aperture in alinement with and forming a continuation of an aperture in the front plate of said casing, a sliding bolt within said casing obstructing in its projected position the aperture in the front plate of said casing, the head of said link being adapted to pass through said apertures when the sliding bolt is retracted, and a lug carried by said bolt projecting through a slot in the front plate of said casing, said lug being adapted to be seated in the slot in said link and serving also as the means by which the sliding bolt can be manually retracted.
5. The combination with alock casing havlng an aperture, a sliding bolt wlthln said casing made of two sections, the front section of said bolt obstructing in its projected position the aperture in said casing, said front section being adapted to slide independently of the rear section of the bolt but the retracting of the latter withdrawing also said front section, means upon said rear section for manually actuating said sliding bolt, and means engaging said rear section adapted to be actuated by a key for retracting said bolt from outside.
6. The combination with a lock casing having an aperture, a sliding bolt within said casing made of two sections, the front section of said bolt obstructing in its projected position the aperture in said casing, said front section being adapted to slide independently of the rear section of the bolt but the retracting of the latter withdrawing also said front section, and means upon said rear section for manually actuating said sliding bolt.
