Application filed June 28, i915. Serial No. 3G,729.
To f/Z "NF7/,017i 'it 1110.3/ concern it known that l, .osirri B. Homin', a ."iliyen oi the *initcd States, residing at iroolilvn, in the county ol2 Kings and Siate oi New York, have inveuteifl a certain new and useful improvement in Portable Heat- Devices, of which the following L ,t fiiication.
The invention relates to portable heaters of' the type which comprises a folding stand, a cup supported thereby, and a fuel-holder received in said stand below saidcup.
The. invention consists in the construction of the stand, and of the adjustable supporting ring `for the cup, as more particularly hereinafter set forth.
In the aceon'xpanying drawings-Figure l is an elevation of my portable heater. Fior. is a 'plan viei'vv of the stand with the cup removed. Fig. 3 is a detail View in section on the line 3, 3 of Fig. l. Fig. 4 is a top view of the cup, showing the stand, supportingring, and iuel receptacle packed therein.
Fig. 5 is a bottom view of the stand, but
exhibiting a inodilied construction. Fig. 6
is a, perspective View of the supporting ring` A`o 'from a single piece ci Wire.
zunilar i'iunihers and letters of reference indicate like parts.
'he 'principal parts of my heater are the cup the suppi'irting ring B therefor, the folding stand C, and the cylindrical fuel holder D. ri'he cup .fi with its pivoted han dle l and cover is of well known construction. rlie fuel holder D is the usual can containing so-ealled solidiied aleoholnow commonly sold on the market.
'i :e stand C' is constructed in the following manner: 4i is a metal plate. 5, 6, 7 are supporting legs stamped from sheet metal and Aforming ay tripod. A shown in Q. one ot the legs, as 5. may be rigidly secured to plate si in any suitaliie way, as, 'for example, by a lug i) on ',"rroiection S which is inserted in a hole in plate 1i and has its Yirotruding ends lia'ii'onaered .iown or upset, so that the lug forms a rivet joining the leg rigidly to the plate. The logs il and 7 have similar inward projections if), il, on cach of wl'iich is an ear i2, 13. 'Flic ear on 'pi'(.,ii':etioi'1 1C is turn-ed in 'the opposite di rertion to the ear i on prfdectiou il, shown in )Rigi i5, i nd sa' the ola* (En i' y 'e pi voted il i . iat when the legs 6, 7 are in open position, as shown in Figs. l and Q, said legs will meet said stop-s. 7 toward the fined Ly swinging the G,
:3, said legs may he folded shown in Fig. ir. rlhe dimensions of i are to lie such that when so folded to-gcil'ie they may be packed in the cupe..
ln order to cheapen the manufacture of the stand, may adopt the modified form shown in Fig. 5. Here the leg is provided with an ar/ 16, pivoted to the plate Ll, and all the ears on the several legs are turned in the same direction. This makes all three legs precisely alike, interchangeable and ca* pable of being stamped out by the saine die.
In the upper end ot' each leg is anotch forming a shoulder l?. Each of these shoui.- ders is received in a notch-1'7" formed in the lower edg'c of the supporting ring l The ring B is a hand of metal having at one end a slot 18, into which enters a tongue l5), formed near the opposite end o'f said ring, said tongue being bent over, as shown in Fig. l. By reason of the free sliding movement of the tongue 19 in the slot 18, the ring may be reduced in diameter so as to be pac {"d in the cup A, shown in Fig. 4, the resiiiency of the ring then holding it closel against the cup Wall. Then the ring is i. moved from the cup and seated upon the legs, as shown in Fig. l, it expands suiiiciently to permit the cup to enter it, while the bottoni of the cup rests upon 'the shoulders l?. yflic cup is, therefore, tightly held by the ring, which also serves as a lateral support for the legs, with which it engages; so that the ring serves the double purpose'i as a-stay for the legs and as a means of preventing disi'ilaccmcnt of the cup.
instead of making the ring in the form of a metal hand, as described, may malte it of spring wire, as re'irescnicd in Fig. 6, the criinps Q() in said wire then taking the place of the notches and engaging in like ma' with the shoulders on the legs. The ends the wire ring simply overlz'ip.
'The 'l'uel can l is reeeiied lietii'een the vertical inner edges of the legs, as shown in llig. 1, and rests upon the 'plate 4. liilhea all three legs are pivoted tojthc plate 4, the can 'in .v rest upon the pivot heads. and so he eveniiy supported, The size of the can preferably to he such :is to permit its lieing packed in the cup together with the stand and supporting ring.
I claim 1. A portable heating device of the type set forth, comprising a cup, a tripod 4having its legs pivotally connected for movement in a common horizontal plane, said legs having shoulders at their upper ends, and a. spring ring having its ends slidably connected; the said ring being variable in diameter to it Within said cup or to receive said cup when in engagement with said legs.
2. A portable heating device of the type set forth, comprising a cup, a stand having a support, a plurality .of legs foldable one upon the other and'connected to said support, and an adjustable `supporting ring hav ing notches engaging the upper extremities of said legs when in open position: the said ring being variable in diameter to it Within and`shoulders at their upper ends, and a spring ring having its ends free and slidable upon one another, and having notches in its edge constructed to receive and rest upon said shoulders: the said ring being adapted to lhold said cup.
In testimony whereof I have atlixed my signature 1n presence of tWo Witnesses.
