To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. MAHoNnY, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Amenia, in the county of Dutchess and State of New York, have 1nvented a certain new and useful Device for Casting Borders, Slugs, Leads, and the like, of which the following is a specification, the same being a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to line casting or matrix setting apparatus such as are ordinarily known as linotype machines, and in particular to an improvement in the v1se employed in the same, whereby. the latter 1s adapted to serve as a matrix slide block and to contain a matrix slide.
It has been the custom in machines of this general character to assemble the matrlces between the jaws of the vise, which are constructed and arranged to register w1th the mouth of the mold, in order to cast lines of type, and to use in connection therewith supplemental apparatus comprising an independent type casting machine, as a linetype made without the assembling and distributing mechanism thereof, for the purpose of casting borders, leads, rules and slugs. the use of my invention, however, the line casting machine itself, in complete form, may be adapted, to perform all these functions, in addition to the casting of the line, and it may thus not only be utilized for the casting, as separate operations, of type line faces and for the object of the provision of a lead and slug matrix, but also for other purposes, as for example, by the employment of my permanent slide block located in the vise, the casting of dash lines at the end of paragraphs or articles may be donew1thout having to insert them by hand-conjointly with the use of the apparatus as a matrix setting device.
A. machine of the class namedequipped with my invention is therefore not only more economical and convenient than those heretofore used, but it is also more rapid, easier to operate and also more eflicient 1n practical use.
With these objects and other purposes in view, the invention consists in the construction, arrangement and operation of parts hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings which accompany and K trative of one embodiment of the same, Figure 1 represents a front elevation of a device, constructed according to my invention; Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same; Fig. 2 is a View in detail of my key; Fig. 3 is an elevation of a slide block in which my invention is embodied; Fig. 3 is an end view of the same; Fig. 4 is a plan view and Fig. 5 an elevation of another slide block made according to my invention; and Fig. 5 is an end view of the latter.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts in all the views.
Referring particularly to the drawings, A denotes the left hand half of a vise having a wedge shaped or tapered longitudinally disposed slot or groove a formed in the face of the same and preferably terminating in a rectangular end portion a, serving as a stop. The body of the matrix slide, as B, is ordinarily made with tapered edges to register with, and to enter, the slot a, and preferably has at its innerend a rectangular shoulder 1) to engage and register and cooperate with the rectangular part or stop a. The slide B is preferably rigidly held Within the slot at by means of a wedge shaped plate or key I) which is ordinarily engaged with a recess formed in the end of the vise, and is made with an orifice through which the screw E, having a knurled head, is entered, which screw engages-a threaded orifice in the vise.
A look nut F, located between the plate D and the head of the screw E, serves to hold the parts securely together. In order to remove one slide B and substitute another one, the screw E and nut F are loosened, whereupon the plate or key D will swing around and hang down on the screw, there. by passing away from the mouth of the slot (1, on account of the smallness of the diameter of the upper portion thereof, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2. The larger faces of the slides 'B may be provided, as at (1 with characters of any description, or with a suitable design for border slugs, etc., which design will register with the mouth of the mold in the usual manner when the slugs are cast, on which occasions the jaws of the vise are closed.
In instances where it is desired to' cast low shoulder dashes, low slugs and leads, a matrix slide C, having a stop C may be used with the vise A, in connection with a low faced mold G. The matrix slide C also preferably has an extension projecting therefrom which will enter the mouth of the mold, and it is ordinarily formed with an elongated portion C to overlap the other half of the closed vise, thus serving to prevent any squirting of the metal therebetween during casting operations.
By the use of the structure disclosed herein, on account of the matrix slide being-inserted at the outer end or face of the vise jaw and being securely held in a locked position, without danger of displacement from jars or blows incident to the operation of the machine, no open spaces or cracks will be formed in which the molten metal could run, as all of the parts are assembled so closely together as to present a closed surface at the junction of the vise jaw and the matrix slide, the body of the slide C being flush with the edge portion or meeting face of the jaw. In casting low shoulder dashes, low slugs, etc'., the use of the matrix slide C has an especial advantage inasmuch as the extension C projects from the side face of the vise in an outward direction and registers with the face of the mold, the contracted part of the body and the slide lying under the projection C being designated in the drawings by the reference character C The projecting face portion C of the slide C is extended laterally, as at C still farther so as to overlap the sides and joint of the closed jaws of the vise when in casting position, the said extension C serving both to overlap, and also for the purpose of being supported by, the other or inner jaw A, and also to close the interstice between the two jaws which are locked up tight in the casting operation, whereby there is no chance of the molten metal flowing out at that point.
-I wish it to be understood that I do not desire to be limited to the exact details of construction shown and described, for obvious modifications will occur to persons skilled in the art.
at the end distant from the vise jaw, and contracted adjacent to the jaw, and a matrix slide to register with the said groove and having a shoulder to engage the said contracted portion to form a closure at the inner end of the jaw flush with the face of the same, in combination with means to close the outer end of the groove and to hold the said slide in operative relation.
2. In a device of the class described, a vise jaw having an undercut groove located in the same and running longitudinally thereof to receive a matrix block and contracted adjacent to the jaw thereof to form a rectangular recess, and a matrix slide to register with the undercut portion of the groove and having means comprising a rectangular end portion to engage the said contracted portion to form a closure for, and flush with, the inner end of the jaw.
3. In a device of the class described, a vise having a groove located in the same and running longitudinally thereof to re ceive a matrix block, and a matrix slide to register with the said groove, in combination with means to detachably lock the said slide in the vise comprising a screw to engage the vise, a key adapted to swing on the screw, and a nut to hold the key in operative position.
4:- In a device of the class described, a vise jaw having an undercut groove located in the same running longitudinally thereof to receive a matrix block and being contracted adjacent to the jaw meeting face to form a recess, and a matrix slide to register with the said groove, the said slide having means to close the recess, and a face portion narrower than the body thereof projecting outwardly from the side face of the jaw, the said projecting part being extended laterally to overlap the side face of the other and opposing vise jaw, when in a closed relation.
