Specification of Letters Patent.

It on whom it may concern Be it 'known that I, CLARENCE E. KoHL- MANN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Fresno, county of Fresno, and State, of California, have invented a new and useful Devlce for Fasten- Electric-Light Bulbs to a Socket, of
which the following is a specification.
' It is known that heretofore sockets for electric light bulbs have been constructed so I the bulbs can be screwed therein, and which have catches arranged to prevent the bulbs from being readily unscrewed but these prior auxiliary attachment which can readily be attached on an ordinary screw bulb socket now in general use which auxiliary device will permit the bulb to be screwed in the regular socket, and when therein such auxiliary device will keep the bulb from being unscrewed unless a key of special design is used to unlock the catch therein, that such auxiliary device can be easlly removed by theperson having the key, and that itcan be cheaply constructed.
In the drawing which accompanies this specification, Figure 1 shows the auxiliary attachment fastened to an ordinary screw lamp socket, with the electric light bulb fas tened therein. Fig. 2 is a part sectional view of the auxiliarydevice through line 2 on Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the devic'through sectional line at shown in Fig. 2. Fig.4 is a key for unlocking said auxiliary device.

'Theopening in wall 4: through which handle 9 extends is ofsuflicient size to permit the collar E to be moved around member D within defined limits;

a F is a catch which consistsof a roller 10, a wire 11 and a spring 12. \Vire 11 has roller 10 attached to one end and is slidingly pivoted at the other end to a point on collar E so that such wire 11 can slide within open: ing 6 when collar E is moved. The relation of recess land collar E is such that collar E can be turned in one direction sufiiciently to draw roller 10 to the larger end of the recess 5, 6, 7 or 8. i. i
12 is shown in the drawing to be a circular compression spring and encircles wire 11 and engages shoulder 13 in the recess 6.
The relation of recess 6, roller 10,-spring- 12; wire 11 and collar is such that when collar E is moved in one direction roller 10 will be drawn into the deeper end of recess 6, and between the inside and outside walls of member D and when collar E is turned in the other direction a segment of roller 10 extends slightly beyond the limits of the inner wall of member D; Rollers 1Q are normally protruding beyond the inside wall of member D as the spring 13 presses such balls toward the smaller end of recesses 5. 6, 7 or 8. l
G is a catch for locking collar E.- It consists of a slide' 26 and an engaging'recess 25 in the outer wall of collar E. By means of spring 27 slide 26, is normally held in engagement with recess 25 and by means of a key,'slide 26 canbe released from such engagement and collar E can be moved. To attach this auxiliary lock to the lamp socket L I have attached a collar K to box B; This collar is constructed to'encircle the lower end of socket L and by means of aset screw 30 it is clamped thereto To further secure such auxiliary lock I have attached a strap preferably of metalito one sideof the box; pass it over the'top of socket Land between the wires, and through anopening H on -.the' opposite sideof the box. Strap H is provided with a plurality ofholes 33, and

It'will be noted that when this device is attached to socket L, a lamp fitting such socket will pass through hole C and can be screwed into the socket as the rollers 10 will readily retreat into the larger end of recesses 5,6, 7, and 8, but in attempting to'unscrew the bulb rollers 10 will be forced toward the smaller end of such recess and thereby cramp and lock the bulb to box B. a
I claim as my invention and desire Letters Patent upon:
1. The combination of an inclosed box having a circular hole therein,'a ring member within and attached to such box withthe hole in such member registering with the hole in such box, having elongated'recesses in the inner walls of such ring with the depth at one end greater thanthe depth I at the other end and a hole through such toward thesmaller end of such recess a section thereof extends beyond'the inner wall of such ring, a collar normally fr'eeto rotate around such ringmember, a wire pivoted to 1 the inner wallof such ring of uniformly increasing depth, the depth at the deepest end being not less than the diameter of such I rollers, and thewidth of such recess being the the roller at one end andslidingly pivoted to the collar at the other'end, means for limiting the rotation of such collar means for-locking such collar so it cannot rotate,
means for connecting such box to an electric light socket, all substantially as described.
2. In combination, an electric light socket,

auxiliary member consisting of an inclosed box, a ring within. such box and attached thereto such ring having an inside diameter to permit free access of the screw portion of such bulb, a hole throughthe top and bottom of such box registering with the hole in thering, acollar constructed to fitaround the outside of the lower portion of such socket and attached to such box so the hole in the ring will register with the screw hole in such socket, means for attaching such collar, to the socketa plurality of rollers, a plurality of elongated recesses in the inner wall of such ring of uniformly increasing depth, the depth at the deepest end being not less than the diameter of such rollers, and the width of such recess being! the length of such roller, a collar normally free to rotate around said ring, holes from the larger ends of such recesses through the outside walls of such ring, wires slidingly fitted Within such holes, slidingly pivoted at one end to suchcollar, and pivoted at the other 'end to such rollers, means for holding such rollers normally in a position so an arc thereof is outside of the inside Wall of such ring, means for locking such collar to such box consisting of an indent in the outside Wall of such collar, a, sliding member normally'held in engagement with such indent, a keyhole through such box, and an independent key constructed to enter such keyhole and release such sliding member from such recess and means for moving such collar in a position to hold such rollers in the deepest portion of such recesses, all substantially as described.
