To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, HARRY A. S LLs and LAFAYETTE SILLS, citizens of the United States, residing at Montpelier, in the county of Blackford, State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Ironing-Board, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention appertains to irpning boards and aims to provide novel and improved means for supporting an ironing board from the edge of a table top or other suitable support.

It is the object of the invention to provide an ironing board provided with unique means for gripping the edge of a. table top, or other support, and operated by a leg pivoted to the board, so that the board may be effectively applied to and supported from the table.

It is also within the scope of the invention to provide an ironing board having the improved features above noted, and which at the same time is comparatively simple and inexpensive in construction as well as being convenient, practical and efficient in use.

With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.

The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device as applied to a table. Fig. 2 is a bottom view of the device.

In carrying out this invention, the ironing board 1 which is of usual construction, is provided at its larger or butt end with a cleat or pad 2 secured across the bottom thereof to seat upon the edge portion of the table top T or other similar support.

A pair of approximately U-shaped frames 3, formed from bars or sheet metal, are secured to the bottom of the board 1 adjacent the larger or butt end thereof, so that the frames 3 depend from the board, the ends of the frames 3 having outturned or angularly extending ears 4 secured in any suitable manner to the bottom of the board.

The frames 3 are disposed longitudinally of the board intermediate the side edges thereof.

its ends between those ends of the frame nearest the butt end of the board or the cleat 2, a rivet or other pivot element 6 being engaged through the frames 3 and lever 5. The lever 5 has a short arm or jaw 7 disposed below and cooperating with the cleat 2 and butt end of the board for clamping or gripping the edge portion of the table top, said edge portion being disposed between the cleat,'and arm or aw 7 The lever 5 has a relatively long arm 8 projecting in the other direction within the frames 3 and terminating short of the opposite ends of the frames.

A leg 9 projecting away from the butt end of the board to a point below the smaller end or tip of the board, is pivoted between the frames 3 at those ends of the frames remote from the pivot 6 of the lever 5. The leg 9 is pivoted to the frames 3 by means of a removable pin or pivot element 10, which may be removed to allow the leg 9 to be brought flatly against the bottom of the board 1. The leg 9 has a. relatively short arm 11 projecting beyond the pivot 10 within the frames 3, and a pair of links 12 pivotally connect the ends of the arms 8 and 11, whereby when the leg 9 is swung relative to the board 1, the arm or jaw 7 will be swung by a considerable leverage.

In applying the board 1 to the table or other support, the butt end of the board is placed upon the edge portion of the table with the arm or jaw 7 therebelow, the smaller end or tip of the board being raised with the lower end of the leg 9 resting upon the floor. Then, when the smaller end of the board is allowed to move downwardly by gravity, the frames 3 will depress the pivot 10 of the leg 9, and the arm 11 moving downwardly will pull the links 12 likewise. This will swing the long arm 8 of the lever 5 downwardly so that the short arm of jaw 7 is moved upwardly forcibly toward the butt end of the board for tightly gripping the table or support. This will serve to hold the board 1 substantially in place, so that the ironing may be done conveniently.

The present device enables the board to be applied to tables of different heights with equal success and propriety. When the device is not in use, the leg 9 may be swung against the board 1 and if preferred, the pin or element 10 may be removed for allowing the 7 leg 9 to rest flatly against the board.

Having thus described the invention, What is claimed as neW is 1. In a device of the character described, a board, a depending frame secured thereto, a lever pivoted to the frame and having a short arm cooperable With the board for gripping a support, said lever having a long arm, a leg pivoted to the frame and having a short arm projecting from its pivot, said short arm of the leg being op'e'ratively connected to said long arm.

2. In a device of the character described, a board, a lever pivoted thereto and having an arm cooperable With the board to grip a support, said lever having a second arm, a leg pivotally connected to the board and having an arm projecting beyond its pivot, and a link connecting said arm of the leg and the second mentioned arm of said lever.

3. In a device of the character described, a board, a frame secured to and depending from said board, a lever pivoted to said frame and having a short arm cooperable With said board for gripping the support, said lever having a long arm, a leg pivoted to said frame and having a short arm projecting beyond its pivot, and a link connecting said short arm of the leg and the long arm of the lever.

4. In a device of the character described, aboard, a pair of approximately U-shapecl frames terminally secured to said board, and depending therefrom, and a lever and leg pivoted between opposite portions of said frames, the lever having an arm cooperating with the board for gripping a support, and "said lever and leg having cooperating arms projecting Within said frames.

5. In a deviceof the character described, a board, a pair of approximately U-shaped frames terminally secured to and depending from said board, a lever and a leg pivoted between opposite portions of said frames, the lever having a short arm cooperating With the board for gripping a support and having a long arm projecting Within the frames, the leg having a short arm projecting Within the frames, and links connecting said arm of the leg and the long arm of said lever.
