.and Stateof Ohio, have invented certain -Anew and useful Improvements in Grinding- Machines; and I do hereby declare thatvthey following is a full, clear, and exact description thereot'l My invention relates to that class of grinding machines especially adapted for grinding engine cylinders and in which a grinding member is simultaneously rotated and revolved around the axis of the cylinder in contact witlrthe' wall and fed longil tudinally thereof. v
One object of the invention is to provide simple and efficient means for eecting these and rotating the grinding member withoutl moving it longitudinally.
Anotherf object of the invention is to provide a structure wherein the grinding wheel spindle and its supporting and actuating parts are moved longitudinally as a unit whereby the rigidity of the spindle is maintained throughout its travel along the wallr of the cylinder, and chattering of the grinding wheel is entirely eliminated.

Journaled inthe housing 1 and projecting through both the housing and baseis a cylindrical sleeve 6 having an annular rack 7 formed on itsouter periphery substantially throughout `its entire length. This sleeve 6 has a longitudinal cylindrical bore 8 formed eccentrically therein ,and in said bore is mounted' a bearingbar or tube y9 adaptedvto be rotatedy in the'bore for the purpose of adjustment and )locked therein sleeve 6 and' engage annularV grooves 11 formed in the periphery of the bearing bar. A spindle 12 extends through the bearing tube 9 and is journaled therein eccentric to the axis of the tube in ball bearings 13 suitably Xed in yeach end of the tube. The tube is closed by plates 14 screwed onto the ends of the tube. The ends of the spindle are reduced to 'form shoulders which abut against the housing of the ball-bearings so that longitudinal movement of the spindle relatively to the bearing tube is prevented.
The sleeve 6 is raised and lowered.` in the housing 1 by means of agear 15 projecting through the side of the housing and engaging the annular rack 7. Said gear is journaled in an arm 16 formed on thehousing, and meshes with a worm" 17 fixed on a horizontal` shaft' 18 journaled in a bearing 19 formed' in the upwardly turned end of the arm 16. On the shaft 18 is rotatably mounted a worm gear 20 having a clutch face 21 on onel side adapted'to be engaged by a clutch face22 formed on the side of a. clutch member 23 which is connected to said shaft by a feather 24 to permitaxial movement of the member thereon. For the purpose of rotating the shaft 18 by hand to bring the sleeve into operative position, said shaft has a squared end portion 25 for the reception-of a crank 26, (Fig. 2) When the, machine is in operation,the shaft is driven from an electric motor and is connected by the clutch member 23 to the worm gear 20, the` latter being driven `by a worm 27 on oneY end of a shaft-28. Rotation of the sleeve 6, (and -by 1t a revolution of thetube 9 and spindle 12) is im parted fromvthe shaft 34 by means of a worm 41,k iixed on the latter between its ends, meshingv with a large horizontal worm gear 42, which surrounds the sleeve 6 and is so connected to the latter as to permit longitudinal or axial movement of the sleeve. The connection between the gear 42 and sleeve 6 consists of a key or featherv 46 on the interior of the hub 43 taking into a keyway 47 formed through the teethl 7 longitudinally of the sleeve.
