The-invention relates'to grinding apparatus, more particularly to a grinding tool for the of an internal cylindrical surface.
.lt'has let its object a tool of this characwhich maybe readily attachable to a 'spindle, for example, for operation on a lathe. of usual construction; or, which may he employed as a unit provided with its own driving means for direct attachment to the object to he ground.
The invention has for its object, furthermore, to enable the tool to he readily iusted to the grinding of internal cylindrical surfaces of various diameters.

The spindle may be rotated in the usual manner by a suitable motor or the like (not shown). A. shaft 4 passes through the said spindle and is mounted in suitable bearings therein and in the -lace plate 1, and is provided with a driving wheel 5. The latter may be connected with the driving mecha: nism provided for spindle 2;, or, may he rotated by suitable means (not shown) independently of the said spindle.
To the face plate l is secured a casing 6 having a cover 7 which may be integral therewith; or, the casing 6 may he made integral with the :iace plate 1 and the cover '7 made removable, if desired, the whole constituting a suitable housing for the transuussion mechanism between the driving shaft 4: and a driven shaft 13. Gear wheel ll meshes with a gear wheel 12 fixed to the inner end of the driven shaft 13, md which shalt passes through an arcuate slot l2 of the cover 7., The said gear wheel, shaft and quill may thus he swung about the intermediate shaft l5 as an axis to afiord thereby a planetary movement of the said shaft 13 and its grinder llabout the intermediate shait 15,.
A locking bolt 16 is arranged to pass through a second arcuate slot 1? of cover 7; and'loy means of its head 18 and a nut 19, is adapted to secure the carrier 8 to the cover 7 in any position selected and resulting from the planetary movement aforesaid,
/ 'lhe grinding wheel, through the said planetary motion, may thus be adjusted for grinding the internal surfaces of hollow cylinders of various diameters, the degree of adjustment depending upon the length of the planetary radii, degree of planetary positiouangle between a line through the axis of the intermediate shaft 15 and the axis of thedriv-ing shaft 4: and a line, through the I axes of the shafts l5 and 13, and upon the diameter of the grinding wheel 14. The grinding wheel may,therefore, he used substantially to its full capacity in that as it wears down the shaft 13 may be planetarily swung compensate for its diminished diameter. The degree of the planetary posi tion is arranged to be adjusted by means of a nut 20 working on a threaded rod 21 secured to the cover 'lythe said out being held between downwardly extending lingers $22 of the carrier plate 8. It is understood, oi course, thatspindle 2 rotates the entire housins and with it the quill 9; and that the cylinder or similar object to be ground is to he till fedrelatively to the said grinding wheel 14 V by means (not shown) generally provided on a lathe in connection with its feed screw (not shown).
' In Fig. 4, the grinder is shown as a com- -plete unit, provided with suitable driving mechanism, and is adapted to receive the object to be ground. To. this end, the spindle 2 is arranged to be held in a hub A concentrically to the internal cylindrical surface of the object which is "suitably supported in arms or clamps R extending from the said hub. Spindle 2 is provided-with a thread matching that of the hub A and carries a worm wheel N meshing with a worm M, the latter being on a shaft L driven through gears K. and J and the 'latter of which is mounted upon shaft I driven through bevel gears F and H. Gear wheel F is mounted upon the shaft D of a drivin motor B, said shaft D driving also a beve gear wheelE in mesh with a bevel gear wheel G' secured to the driving shaft 4 and which passes through the spindle 2. The

In grinding apparatusz-a driving shaft in fixed position, and means to rotate the same; an intermediate shaft relatively fixed with respect'to said driving shaft; a driven shaft, and a grinding wheel secured thereon; and transmission mechanism intermediate of said driving and driven shafts and affording a planetary movement of the latter about the said intermediate shaft.
