MACHINE FOR MAKING BOLTS AND THE LIKE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Jan. 18, 19146.
Application filed September 25, 1911. Serial'No. 651,016. l
` and the like, of which the followingis a specification, the principle of thel invention being herein explained and the best mode in which I havey contemplated "applying that principle so as to distinguish it from other inventions.V
The present improvements relating as indicated to machines for making bolts and the like, have regard more particularly to the upsetting of the end of the bar or rod constituting the stock or body of the bolt, in order to form a head thereon.
The object of the invention is to provide a mechanism of this sort wherein the tendency to form fins, or, in other words, for the metal to escape from between the gripping dies and heading tool, is substantially entirely eliminated, thus rendering it possible to quickly and by a single operation to form a complete and satisfactory head. n
To the accomplishment of these and related ends the invention, then, consists of the means hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The annexed drawings and the following l description set forth in detail certain mechanism embodying the invention, such disclosed means constituting, however, but one of various mechanical formsin which the principle of the invention may be used.A
ln said annexed drawings :-`Figure 1 is a plan view of the portion of a forging or upsetting machine wherein the present improvements are incorporated; Fig.` 2 is a central, vertical sectionk of such' machine taken on the line 2-2, Fig. l; Figs. 3 and 4 are transverse sections of the samerespectively taken on the lines 3-3 and 4-4, Fig. 2; while Figs. 5` and 6 are corresponding horizontal sectional views of said machine respectively showing the parts in operative positions different from eachother andffrom that shown in Fig. 2.
Only so much of the general frame 2 of the machine is illustratedl in the foregoing figures as is deemed necessary in order to shown in retracted position in Figs. 1 and 2,
in partially advanced positionin Fig. 5, and yin fully advanced position in Fig,` 6. The detailed construction ofv this header slide will next be set forth.
'Secured to the forward `end of the header slide by a suitable clamp colla-r 4 and setbolt 5, is an extension 6, preferably cylin` drical inform, that is of reduced diameter at its outer end and furthermore formed with an annular recess just back of such end so as to provide an under-cut head 7. This extension G lies within a recess in the header slide that extends to the front end thereof and is bridged at an intermediate point by `of two separable parts bolted together, and
is formed with anl enlargement 12 at its forward end that forms a holder adapted to receive a Vforming die 13, such die being secured therein by means of a setV bolt 14 and being thus readily exchangeable with others of different size bore. The bore-in such die, it will be understood, is of the form and size which it is desired to give to the bolt head in a transverse plane. ported inthe sleeve 11 an upsetting or heading tool 15, the forward end of the latter extending into the bore of this forming die 13, while its rear end has a recessed or undercut head` 16 similar tothe head 7 atthe forward end of the header extension.
