To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, EDMUND B. Pownns, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Anticreeping Devices for Railway-Rails, of which the following is a specification. I
The invention relates to that class of anticreeping devices in which the rail is held to a tie-plate by the engagement of a roller in an angular space provided between the baseflange of the rail and an adjacent angular face on a lug formed on the tie-plate, and the object of the invention is to providereliable and economical means for holding the roller against vertical movement and consequent escape from such angular space.
The invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement by which the above objects are attained, tobe hereinafter described.
The accompanying'drawings form a part of this specificationand show an approved form of the invention. 1
Figure 1 is a plan view showing a portion of a rail supported upon and in engagement with a tie-plate constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a section taken transversely of the rail, on the line 22 in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a top view of the roller on a larger scale, and Fig. 4 is a corresponding side elevation.

A is the head of the rail and A A the base-flanges supported on a tie-plate B se-- cured to the tie, not shown, by spikes D or other suitable fastening means. On the plane upper face of the tie-plate at one end is an abutment B against which lies the outer flange A of the rail and on the opposite end is a lug B having its face next adjacent to the flan e i 2 vertical and inclined angularly to the cage of the flange, and preferably inclined in opposite directions from the center of the lug to form an obtuse angle as indicated in dotted lines at Z2 Z1 in Fig. 1. In the angular space thus provided is received a rotatable member or vertically arranged roller E, preferably cylindrical, and toothed or corrugated peripherally in the axial direction as at E the better to engage the edge of and adapted the flange A and adjacent angular face 6 to be forced by the endwise movement or creep of the rail into the gradually narrowing portion of the angular space until it reaches a position at which further movement in that direction is impossible and thus holds the rail against further creep relatively to the tie-plate. The double angularity of the face of the lug prevents release by a retrograde movement of the rail and insures permanent engagement.
To prevent vertical movement of the roller E a flange or lip B is provided on the lug B overhanging the angular space and overlapping upon the upper face of the roller. The depth of the rabbet thus provided or the vertical distance between the upper face of the tie-plate and under face of the lip B is enough greater than the height of the roller to permit the latter to move freely therein, and the lip overhangs sufiiciently to hold the roller against vertical displacement.
In applying the roller the edge of the outer flange A of the rail is engaged against the Patented an.18, 1916..
abutment B with the base of the rail in an inclined position, the roller E is then inserted beneath the lip B and at or near the center of the obtuse angle formed by the faces 6 b of the lug B the rail is then turned down into full contact with the tie-plate, with the edge of the inner flange A against the exposed periphery of the roller, and the spikes driven. The roller is preferably of such diameter as to require considerable force to be exerted in thus placing the rail, so that the corrugations E on the roller will slightly indent or bite into both the edge of the baseflange A and face 6 thus insuring the en saidplate having an angular face adjacent to such rail, a cylindrical flangeless roller in the angular space between said angular face and rail and engaging the base-flange of the rail,
and a lip on said lug constructed to overhang sald angular space and roller and prevent vertical movement of the latter.
2. In a device of the character set forth, a
tie-plate adapted to support a rail, a lug on said plate having tvvocangular faces adjacent 1 faces and rail and engaging the base-flange of the rail, and a lip on said lug constructed to overhang said angular'spac'e and roller and prevent vertical movement of the latter.
