Description

ABRAM M. LORYEA, OF EAST PORTLAND, OREGON.

Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented a new and Improved Medical Compound; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exactdescription thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a new compound for the treatment of rheumatism, in which the essential ingredient is the unk-weed, which I supposeto be Thaspium cordatmn, of Oregomwhich I propose to denominate The Unk-weed Remedy, which consists of the following ingredients mixed in about the proportions stated: Tincture of unk-weed, two and one-half ounces, avoirdupois; stomach-hitters, one ounce the compound tincture of Peruvian bark, of the United States Dispensatory, one-half ounce the hypophospliate of potassa, one scruple; the compound powder of ipecacuanha, one-half dram; essence of wintergreen, .twenty-fiw e drops; distilled Water, four ounces. To be shaken Well. Dose,atable-spoonful three or four times a day.
The tincture of unk-weed, botauically known as Thaspz'mn cordatum, employed in the abow e compound, is made by powderin g one-half pound of the dried unk-weed roots, stems, leaves, &c., and percolating it in a displacer with dilute aloohol until two pints of tincture have been obtained; and the following is the formula for the stomach-hitters used in the aforesaid compound: Oolumba rad, contus., gentian rad., oontus, aurant. oort., cardamomii se1n., angelica se1n., each one ounce; uva passae, ten ounces; cocous cacti,
proof spirit, four pints macerate fourteen days.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The unk-weed remedy, consisting of the above compound, substantially as specified.
2, The combination of the unk-wced, hypophosphate of potassa, and the compound tincture of cinohona, substantially as specified.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 7th day of December, 1870.
A. M. LORYEA.
