The invention has for its object to provide a spike of improved and simplified construction embodying means for reliably anchoring the spike against removal from the tie or other object into which it is driven.
Another object is the provision of an inn proved railway spike including a tapered shank and a spiral shoulder extending from adjacent the end thereof to a point adjacent the opposite ends, each of the convolntion's of the shoulder being of substantially rectangular formation and constituting anchormg means designed to reliably secure the Y spike against removal.
Another object is the provision of a spike including a shank rectangular in cross scctien and having two of the four faces there of tapered t0 define a cutting edge at one end thereof to facilitate setting of the spike, a pair of oppositely directed shoulders being formed upon the substantially parallel side faces of the shank edgeto further insure against the removal of the spike.
With these and other objects in view, the
invention consists'in the. novel construction,

The front and rear faces 10 and side faces 11 of the shank are disposed in substantially parallel relation throughout the major portion of their length, head (5 are tapered relatively wide cutting edge 12 at the end of the shankopposite the head 6.
Adjacent their lower extremities the front and rear faces 10 ofthe shank are,. for1ncd with laterally projecting shoulders 13, and the portions l{ of the faces 10 intermediate the shoulders 13 and the cutting edge 12 are tapered.
The side-faces of the spike shank are formed with a substantially spiral shoulder 15 extending-at right angles to said side faces from 13 to a point adjacent the head (i.
