Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented aan. ii, raie.
Application filed Gctoeer 15, 1915. Serial No. 55,995.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that l, Howells V. BRUMLEY, a citizen of the United States residing at Plandome, in the county of Nassau and State of New York. have invented new and useful Improvements in l\TurSing-`\lipples7 of which the following is a speciiication.
This invention relates essentially to that kind ot elastic nursing nipples which is adapted for attachment to the neck of a babys milk bottle.
The object or". the invention is to provide the nipple with a stem or top portion so shaped that the wall ot the nipple is prevented from collapsing. The invention is designed to obviate the adhesion of the walls, and consequent break down oi the nipple, caused by the compression ci the stem while the liquid is being sucked through.
The invention comprehends a nipple which is inexpensive, non-collapsible, can
be readily cleaned, and has no sharp cor ers for the lodgment of particles of milk or other injurious unsanitary matter. By reason ot the peculiar tapered triangular ormation of the stem the nipple can be conveniently turned inside out in order to facilitate cleaning and removal of any foreign matter loc ged on the inner surface of the nipple.
The novel features of the invention are more fully described in the following specilication and claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure l represents a side elevation et a nipple embodying this invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical central section of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the saine on a larger scale. Fig. t is a horizontal section taken along the line y y or Fig. l on a larger scale.
In this drawing the letter a designates a cylindrical tubular base adapted for insertion over the neck of any ordinary nursing bottle. The lower end of the base is provided with a flange Z2 the inner portion of which is oi. somewhat smaller diameter than the inner surface of the tubular base member in order to give tight closure when the nipple is fitted to the neck of a bottle.
The upper portion or' the tubular base has a shoulder c from which projects a tubular stem cl having a hemispherical top e forming the apex of the nipple. At the top of the hemispherical member is located a hole ,t for the liquid to pass through. The stem d as shown is angular with three llat sides extending from the shoulder to the top. rlhe sides are inclined with the smaller diameter at the vertices where the hemispherical top is joined to the sides, and the largest diameter at the shoulder c located on the base. lhe convergent angles of the triangular walls are joined together by curved segmental walls g projecting from the shoulder to the top of the nipple, thus avoiding any angles and eliminating any crevices for the lodgment of dirt.
lt will be seen that the tubular elastic stem forms a triangular pyramidic cone, with a domed apex, so that when the article is in use and the walls are compressed creating a suction in the nipple the walls will form diverging angles at their inner sur- 1faces and sticking together of the walls will be practically avoided.
I claim:
l. A nursing nipple comprising a base adapted for insertion on the neck of a bottle,
and an angular tubular stem projecting from the base.
2. A nursing nipple comprising a base adapted tor insertion on the neck of a bottle, and a tapered angular tubular stem'projecting from the base.
3. A nursing nipple comprising a cylindrical flanged base adapted for insertion on the neckr of a bottle, and a tapered angular tubular stem projecting from the base.
et. A nursing nipple comprising a cylindrical shouldered and flanged base adapted for insertion on the neck ot' a bottle, and a tapered angular stem having a hemispherical apex.
A nursing nipple comprising a cylindrical shouldered and flanged base adapted for insertion on the neck of a bottle, and a triangular tapered stem projecting from the base, said stem having a hemispherical apex.
6. A nursing nipple comprising a cylindrical flanged and shouldered base adapted to lit on the neck of a bottle, a triangular conical stem projecting from the base, curved walls joining the convergent angles, said stem having a hemispherical apex.
7. A nursing nipple comprising a cylindricnl tubular base having a flanged lower n testimony whereof I have hereunto set portlon and a shouldered top to ft on the my hand m the presence of two subscrlbneck of a bottle, a trlangular tapered stem mg Witnesses.
projecting from the shoulder, the angles of HUARD V. BRUMLEY. 5 the triangle being joined together by seg- Witnessesz mental walls, and a hemsphercal member CHRISTIAN H. ALIISTAEDT,
surmountng the stem. HAZEL V. REIDENBACH.
