CHAPELLE. of Beverly, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for lVorking an Upper on a Last, of which the following is a speciready disclosed in the above patent.
The object of this invention is to provide a machine for working an upper on a last which will be rapid in operation and capable of producing more satisfactory work than that produced by those at present in use,- The various features employed to the accomplishment of this object will be apparent to one skilled in the art to which the invention relates from the following description and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved machine; Fig. 2 is a plan of the upper part of the machine shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a detail view of the end of the toeengaging stop; Fig. l is a sectional detail view showing particularly the means for adjustinr the toe-engaging stop; Fig. 5 is av sectional detail view of the device for pressing the last against its support; Fig. 6 is a detail view showing the means for ad: just-ing the time operation of the mechanism for pulling the upper lengthwise of the last; Fig. 7 is a central longitudinal section of the upper part of the machine shown in Fig. fly-Fig. 8 is a section on the line 8-8. of Fig. 7; Fig. 9 is a sectional detail illustrating the manner in which the upper is pulled lengthwise of the last; Fig. 10 is a detail of the portion of the upperpulling device which will be hereinafter described; and, Fig. 11 is a detail view of the stop for limitingthe lengthwise movement of the last, which will be hereinafter described.
The machine illustrated in the drawings is of a lasting machine of the type commonly known as bed lasters .In malast, and more parchines of this general type it is customary to employ wipers to wipe the upper over the bottom of the last: The wipers 1 shown particularly in Fig. 2 (these wipers are adapted to be positioned at the toe shoe "whereby the upper may be simultaneusly wiped over the bottom of the last at the sides of the toe and at the toe-end) are illustrated asbeing similar to the wipers shown in the patent to Stirckler, No. 477,788 dated June 28, 1892. In the present invention, a last presser is provided as is later described. The upper working devices are carfied on a head 2 pivoted at 3 on a column at in order that the angle of the head may be adiusted to conform to the desires of various operators. Adjusting devices 5 are provided by which the head may be turned about its pivot.
. A last-receiving spindle 6 'is pivotally mounted at 7 on a slide 8. The slide is mounted in ways in "the head 2 and normally urged toward the toe-end (the right in Fig. 2) of the head by a spring 9. Stops 10 and 11 are provided to limit the sliding movement of the spindle carrying slide. The spindle is made in the form of a bell crank having a projecting arm 12 which is normally elevated by a spring 13, therebyforcing the spindle about its pivotal point 7, toward the toe-end'of the head. An adjustable stop 14 is provided to permit the limiting of its movement in this direction. The
operator places the work into the machine preferably after the assembling of the upper to the heel-end of the last by suitable fastenings and prior to the insertion of additional fastenings to hold the upper in lasted condition, as the entire upper, including the heel portion may be lasted by the operator during the time the work is in the machine. i
I want .it well understood that the operator may last the upper. after the final of the actuation of the toe-support and during the" time the work is in the machine, by any presently known hand method of lasting, not patented, that he may choose to adopt.
It is apparent from an inspection of Fig. 7 that adjustment of the stop 14: will vary the vertical position of the spindle 6 with respect to the other parts of the machine. In the present invention, the toe-support performs thefunction of pullingthe upper lengthwise of, the last. The toe-support also moves the last, as the toe-support on the arc of a circle and as its movement toward the toe progresses, the.
upward movement of. the toe-support accordingly progresses toward the last' and under the influence of that upward movement of the toe-support toward the last the last is moved. In operating a machine of the character described it has been found advantageous to first engage and overstrain the vamp of the upper by the toe-support and to release the treadle 22, by which thereafterrthe toe-support, to some extent,-
by pressure upon the slide 25 may be moved and thereby the toe-support may be released and may be moved rearwardly under the influence of jthe reactionary strain'of the vamp thereagainst. After releasing some of the strain upon the vamp, as above explained, the sides of the vamp may then be pulled over the bottom of the last and fastenings may be applied to hold the vamp in lasted cond1-' tion at the sides'of the last, during the time the vamp is under engagement of the toesupport. In its broadest aspect, this overstraining movement upon the vamp by the toe support is to positively strain and smooth out the vamp lengthwise of the last, which lengthwise straining movement is conducive to best results. In some cases,
however, it may be advantageous to pull the vamp over the bottom of the lastat the shank, or at, or near the ball of the last and toapply fastenings at those points to hold the vam pin lasted condition and thereafter, to pull the vamp over the bottom of the last at, or near the tip-seam of the vamp and to apply'fastenings to hold that portion of the vamp in lasted condition. The vamp then i is to be preferably pulled at the ball of the last and is to be fastened in lasted condition prior to releasing the toe-support and thereby, of apart of the strain upon the vamp and thereafter, the vamp is to be pulled prelerably at the tip-seam and is to befastened in lasted condition after releasing the toe-supportf and thereby of a partof the strain upon the vamp. I want it well understood that the sides of the vamp may be pulled and fastened at other points instead -of at the-points above specified, without dethe upper 'on the toe-support, an elastic pad 36 is mounted on the upper" end of a Y- shaped member 37; Thepad is secured to the member by screws and also by corrugations 37* formed on the end of the member as shown particularly in Fig. 10. The member 37 is adjustably secured to a bell crank 38 which is pivoted at 39 on the head 2. A spring 40 surrounding the pivot stud 39 tends to hold the toe-support toward the rear of the last as is shown in Fig. 7. The other arm of the bell crank 38 engages a stud 41 mounted on the head 2 and provided with nuts 42 which are adapted to limit the movement of the bell crank in eitherdirection.
The toe-support is moved about its pivot 39 toward the toe of the shoe by engaging a part of the moving slide 25. A. rod 43 is provided to contact with the bell crank.
This rod may be adjusted with relation to the slide 25 so as to vary the time of movement of the bell crank by loosening nuts 46' (see Fig.6) on a threaded stud 47. The stud L7 is mounted in a block 44 which carries the rod 43'. The block &4 is mounted for a lengthwise adjustment in a way 45.

' The movement of the toe-support may be retarded or the toe-support may be moved intermittently during the time of the pulling movement upon the upper by treadle 22 by which the action of the slide 25 may be controlled by the operator.
Mechanism is provided to determine the amount of movement imparted to the toesupport 15. 'As the toe-support pulls the upper, this limits the pulling movement. This mechanism comprises a rod 50 mounted in an ear 51 depending from the slide 25. A set-screw 52 holds the rod in position. The rod passes through the opening in the head 2 and is provided with collars 53 and 54. The collar 54 is adapted to limit the movement of the slide 25 away from the last, and the collar 53 is adapted to limit the movement of the slide toward the last.
After the slide 25 has moved toward the last until the collar 53 prevents further movement, which will also limit the pull on the upper, toward the toe, the operator uses the last-presser (shown in Fig. 5) .to press the last downwardly against the toe-sup ort. This last presser is especially in- .te'ndedfor McKayshoes, as generally, wipers are not used on McKay shoes.
This last presser is then used for compressing the work against the toe-support-after the pulling movement upon the upper, and thereby overcome the slippingback of the upper upon the toe-support during the application offastenings at the sidesvto hold the upper in lasted condition. In some cases, however, according to the,nature of the work operated upon, the spring 13 may hold the work against the toe-support with suflicient force so the last presser will be unnecessary during the application of fastenings. This last presser is not absolutely necessary withwelt shoes or any other kind of shoes requiring a wiping operation at the toe, as then the wipers may be moved in operative position and may contact with the work and hold the work against the toesupport during the time the fastenings are being applied at the sides. The wipers may be moved in operative position prior to the pulling movement upon the upper and may stop the work being moved by the toesupport and, of course, the pulling move ment upon the upper.

A machine for working an upper on a a last, having, in combination, last supporting means adapted to be positioned at the rear part of the last, so arranged that the last may be thereby engaged independently of the upper on the last, upper pullingmeans adapted to be positioned approximately at the center of thetop of the forepart of the last, back of the toe, so arranged that the upper may be thereby engagedat one side only, actuating means for said upper pulling means and heel engaging means, so. arranged that the upper may be thereby held toward the last, substantially as described.

A machine for working an upper on a last, having, in combination, upper pulling means adapted to be positioned approximately at the center of thetop of the forepart of the last, back of the toe, last moving means adapted to be positioned relatively to the last, so arranged that the last may be thereby moved lengthwise of the machine to cause said upper pulling means to pull the upper lengthwise of'the last,
under the influence of the movement of the last by said last moving meansga lever positioned relatively to said last moving means, connections positioned relatively to said last moving means and to said lever, so arranged that the movement of said last moving means may be thereby controlled and heel engaging means adapted to be positioned relatively to the last and-so arranged that the upper may be thereby held toward the last.

A machine for working an upper on a last, having, in combination, last supporting means adapted to be positioned at the rear part of the last, so arranged that the last may be thereby engaged independently of the upper on the last, upper pulling means adapted to be positioned approximately at the center of the top of the forepart of the last, back of the toe, a last pin to support the last and actuating means to actuate said last 4 pin lengthwise of the machine to move the last toward said upper pulling means and heel-engaging means adapted to be positioned relatively to the last and so arranged that the upper may be thereby held toward the last.

A machine for working an upper on a last, having, in combination, last supporting meansadapted to be positioned at the rear part of the last, so arranged that the last may be thereby engaged independently of the upper on the last, upper pulling means adapted to be positioned approximately at the center of the top of the forepart of the last, back of the toe, yielding actuating means vo actuate said upper pulling means lengthwise of the last, stopping means positioned relatively to said upper pulling means, so arranged that said upper pulling means may be thereby stopped from movement toward the heel, after the pulling operation upon the upper toward the toe by said upper pulling means and heel engaging means adapted to be positioned relatively to the last and so arranged that the upper may be thereby held toward the last.

A machine for working an upper on a last, having, in combination, last supporting means adapted to be positioned at the rear part of the last, so arranged that the last may be thereby engaged independently of theupper on the last, upper pulling means adapted to be positioned approximately at the center of the top of the forepart of the last, back of the toe, actuating means to actuate said upper pulling means lengthwise of the last, toward the toe, said upper pulling means being arranged for movement toward the heel independently of said actu- 74.
