GEORGE W. LEWIS, OF DANSVILLE, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO HLMSELF AND JOHN VHYLAND, OF SAME PLAGE.
IMPROVEMENT IN PUNCHING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 116,726, dated July 4, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. LEwrs, of Dansville, in the county of Livingston and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Machines for Punching Metal, of which the following is a speciiication:
This invention consists in combining, with the frame, an improved arrangement ofparts, as hereinatter described.
In the drawing the ligure represents a perspective view of my improved machine.
A represents the frame or block, which may be bolted or otherwise attached to any suitable support. B represents the lever, pivoted to the frame at a. C is a connecting-bar or clevis, connecting the lever with an arm, D. This arm is also connected with the frame by a clevis, E. This allows a free action of all the parts. F is the punch-shaft, connected with arm D by means of jointed clevis G. This shaftJ passes down through a bearing, b, of the frame, and has inserted in its lower end the punch H, which may be secured by a set-screw, c, or in any desired manner. The punch thus gets great purchase or leverage, and is easily operated. I represents the punch-block, which consists simply of a separate piece of steel or other hard meta-l, having a central hole, d, into which the punch passes, after having passed through the metal which is being punched. This punch-block has lian ges f f, which are clamped down and held in position upon the bed of the frame by a clamp-frame, K. This clamp-frame consists of a socket or bow, g g, which embraces the Vpunch-block and bears upon its flanges, and a vertical loop or eye, h h, which embraces the bed A. It is held to the bed by means of a hand-screw, 'a'. This arrangement of the clamp and punch-block allows any desired adjustment upon the bed to suit the position of the punch, and also allows the replacing of the punch-block by one of a larger or smaller size, as the necessities of the case may require. L represents a gauge-plate, which stands back of the punch-block, and a little higher in position. It is adjustable forward or backward by means of slots lc k, formed in projections Z l, through which pass headed screw-bolts m m,
tightened by nuts n n. By this means any ninnber of pieces of metal may be punched in exactly the same place, as the gauge serves as a guide to the position of the bars being punched. M represents an adjustable holder, which is in the forni of a bow, with the upper ends pivoted to the fra-me, as shown at p p. Its lower or bow end comes opposite the punch, and at such a distance above the punch-block as will allow the insertion of the article to be punched between.

The article striking the bottom of the holder is prevented from rising, and the punch readily draws out. In forcing thc punch down the holder is swung back, as indicated in dotted lines, which allows the operator a free sight of his work.
The arrangement ofthe several features above described constitutes the novelty of my invention.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The pivoted holder M, formed with the opening r, in combination with the punch F and punch-block I, as and for the purpose herein set forth.
2. The punch-block I, formed with the flanges f, in combination with the clamp-frame K and the bed A', substantially as described.
3. The pivoted holder M, punch F, punchblock I, gauge-plate L, and bed A', combined and operating as set forth.
4. The pivoted holder M, punch F, punchblock I, bed A', and clamp-frame K, combined and operating substantially as set forth.
5. The combination of the pivoted `holder M,
punch F, levers B D, connecting-links O E, punchblock I, clamp K, bed A', and gauge-plate L, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
