Description

UNITE STATES EPHRAIM S. HOLLOVVAY, OF OOLUMBIANA, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT lN PRESSING AND STUFFING-MACHINES.
- Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 116,709, dated July 4, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EPHEAIM S. HoLLowAY, of Columbiana, in the county of Columbiana and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stuffing and Pressing-h/Iachines for Butchers and Household Work; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, olea-r, and exact description thereof, referencebeinghad to the accompanying' drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the con! struction and arrangement of a gate, guide, screw, follower, and operating-gear, arranged and operating with relation. to each other as hereinafter described.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe more fully its construction and operation.
In the accompanying drawing', which forms part of my specification, Figure l an end elevation of my improvement in stuiing and pressing-machines for butchers and household work; Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same, cut through at line y of Fig. 1.
In the accompanying drawing, A represents the base or frame, to which are attached guides B for the gate A. To the cross-bar o of the guides 'B is secured a nut, h, in which works a screw, F, the upper end of which is pivoted in the end piece t of the gate A, in the sides of which are pivoted the axes of the wheels C and E, which mesh into the wheel D on the upper end of the screw F, the lower end of which is provided' with a follower, g. In the base A is itted a bottom piece, n, for the receiving-vessel lc, which is provided with a spout, m. The bottom piece n is provided with slides s, which are fitted in corresponding grooves in the base A, clearly shown in Fig. 1. The receiving-vessel k may be pro vided with a vessel, l, whichis placed within the vessel lc. This vessel is used for pressing berries and other fruit, and maybeused for pressing lard. The sides ofthe vessel t are provided with a large numb er of small openings, as represented in Fig. 2.
When the press is arranged as shown in the accompanying drawing, and is to be used for pressing berries, they are put in a bag or within the folds of a cloth, and placed in the vessel l the operator turns the cranks J which revolve the wh eels O and E, which will revolve the wheel l), and thereby the screw F, which, by turning I in the nut h, will draw down the gate A and mechanism connected to it, and force down the follower g upon the berries in vessel I, and their .juice or liquor will ow out through the openings in the sides of the vessel into -he vessel k and out through the spout m into a suit able vessel. For stuing sausageaneat the vessel L is not required. The vessel is secured to the detached bottom piece for convenience of manipulating the vessel. The gate A and fol lower g are raised up with great speed by turning the crank of wheel C, the small wheel E being used for gaining power. The arrangement of wheels will be readily understood, and also their use.
The gate A, guides B, operating-gear O, I), and E, in combination with screw F and follower g, constructed, arranged, and operating with relation to each other, substantially as herein described, and for the purpose set forth.
E. S. HOLLOW/TAY.
