TABLE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented; Jan, 4, 1%16.
Application filed January 25, 1915. Serial No. 4,285.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, OMAR MODANIEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sedalia, in the county of Pettis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tables, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in tables, and an object of the inven tion is to provide a device of this general character having novel and improved means whereby the same is readily portable and when not in use may be so compacted as to occupy a minimum of space. 1
Furthermore, it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character having novel and improved means whereby the supporting member or leaf may be adjusted as desired relative to the surface upon which it is mounted. V
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my-improved table whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwisemore convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will .be carefully defined in the appended claim.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a table constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention; Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view illustrating the connection between the table and the supporting members therefor; and Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view, partly in section and partly in elevation, illustrating in detail the operative connection between certain of the members comprised in the supporting mechanism.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, 1 denotes the supporting member or leaf having hingedly secured to the longitudinal margins thereof, the extension leaves 2 which may be readily folded over the member or leaf 1 when desired.
Pivotally secured, as at 3, at substantially the axial center of the leaf or member 1 is a rod 4 adapted to telescopingly engage the elongated tubular member 5, the relative adjustments of the rod 1 and member 5 beingmaintained in a conventional manner under the influence of a clamping screw 6 disposed through the upper extremity of the member 5 and adapted to coact with the rod l; Slidably engaged with the member 5 is a sleeve 7 having pivotally secured, thereto the supporting legs 8, while the lower extremity of the member 5 has fixedly secured thereto a collar 9 to which is pivotally engaged the bracing links 10, which in turn are pivotally engaged, as at 11, with the legs 8 at a predetermined point intermediate the lengths thereof. The movement of the sleeve 7 independently ofthe member 5 is under control of a conventional clamping member 12 threaded through the sleeve 7 and coacting, in a well known way, with the member 5. As is believed to be self-evident, the legs 8 and the member 5 may be readily compacted to occupy a minimum of space upon release of the sleeve 7, and such legs may be readily separated into supporting position under the influence of the collar 7.
Pivotally engaged with each of the bracing links 10 intermediate the length thereof, as at 1 1, is an elongated rod 15 in telescopic engagement with the tubular member 16 pivotally engaged, as at 17, with the leaf or member 1, an operative connection between the rod 15 and member 16 being maintained under influence of the conventional clamping member 18, herein disclosed as suitably directed through the lower extremity of the member 16 and adapted to coact with the rod 15. I
As is believed to be self-evident, the telescopic coaction between the rods 15 and the tubular member 16 permits a ready and convenient adjustment of the member or leaf 1 relative to the surface on which the device is positioned and especially to arrange said member or leaf 1 in a horizontal or level position.
I also find it of advantage in practice to have in swivel engagement with'each of the rods 15 the ring member 19 through which the legs 8 are directed, whereby it will be perceived that upon movement of the sleeve 7 to fold the legs- 8, the rods 15 will be also adjusted into compact position relative to the member 5, and vice versa.
While I have shown the member 16 as pivotally engaged with the leaf or member 1, it is to be understood that said member 16 may be free of connection therewith as the device will operate with equal facility by having the leaf or member 1 simply in contact with the members 16.
From the foregoing description, it is heught to be obvious that a table contructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inez'pensive nature and is particularly Well use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled, and it will also be obvious that my intention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise ar rangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my in- YQIltlOIl in practice.
I claim:
A device of the character described comprising a leaf, an elongated member operatively engaged with said leaf at substantially the aXial center thereof, a sleeve slidably mounted upon the elongated meml' er, locking means carried by the sleeve for maintaining the same against movement independently of the elongated member, legs operatively engaged with the sleeve, brace links operatively engaged with the legs and with the outer extremity of the elongated member, additional elongated members operatively engaged with the bracing linlrs and with the leaf, and rings in swivel connection with the last named elongated mem bers and through which the legs are dir cted.
In testimony whereof I hereunto allix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
