- Application led April 6, 1912,-vSeria1No. 688,857. Renewed `.Tune 1, 1915. Serial No. 31,637. f
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, BAsIL MAGOR, a subj ect'of the King of Great Britain, andl a resident of the borough of'Manhattan of the city of New York, in th'e'county and tate of NewrYork, have invented an Improvement in LoggingCars, of whichthe following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
The inventionl relatesmore particularly to improvements in multiple-bunk logging' cars, the object being to unite the bunks and their connecting or reachl members into a simple and eflicient frame construction.
In the drawings where a logging car is shown embodying the invention, Figure l is a plan view of the car, Fig. 2 is a trans.
verse sectional view of theframe, withone of the trucks indicated by dotted lines,v the the drawing Vbelongs to that type of logging car where the loading is done by employing va loading car which, travels upon a track pro'- vided upon the logging cars, whereby one logging car may be loaded from the adjacent logging car. The track referred to may be seen at a in the accompanying drawings, and extends the full length of the car. The
frame of the car has three reach members,l one of which is the center-sill b, preferably an I-beam, which terminates at points interfmediate the ends and which is continued to the ends by draft-sills c. The other two reach members are the side-sillsd, preferv ably I-beams, which, with the end-sills e,
form a rectangular frame. Y
.The draft-channels c, at either en d, are securely fastened, one 'on each side, to the center-sill which they overlap, `(Fig. 2).` Y by intermediate pieces f; and across the' intersection of these parts, the end or main bunks of the car are passed vby laying a pair of bunk-forming plates g, L, oneY above and the other below, transverselyacross the f' three reaches and providing binding plates or braces z' on the sides of the bunks'toaround the reaches.
Patented Jan; 4,1916. z l
lunite the top'and bottomv plates together ,".rThe top platev l1, of the bunks is preferably A V a straight channel-iron laid with its channel inverted ig. 4L), and thebottom: plate is also preferably ,2l Channel, curved, if desired, to pass underneath, thecenter-sill and otherwisestrengthen the'bunk as a whole. A :short strip 7c may be laid along the bearing surface'of the bunk to preventthe logs from slipping longitudinally when in transit; and
suitable stakes, denoted --infthe preseiit` instance by Z, maybe providedas usual, at
versely embracing the center-sill and 4side' reaches to which they are secured .(Fig. 3). The intermediate bunks are also preferably provided with strips and stanchions Z to assist inA keeping lthe logs in place duringV transit. It will be understood, of course,
vthat the mechanism for controlling the stanchions, as well as other detail mechanism, is omitted from the present drawingsy as not necessary to an understandingof the present invention.
The presentV construction, with the sidev reaches passing, as they do, through the bunks, has the advantage that the so-called bunks are both transverse braces for the frame and log-supporting means. VIn addition, if desired, therefmay be provided a num; ber of relatively light transverse and diagonal braces By providing ra pair oftimber beams n, along the inner sidesof vthe sidev ,reaches d, a floor 0 may be laid over as much A 9.5
of the car as is desired 'by depositing plankside of Fig. l). c 4 I claim asfmy invention:
l'. The combination to form a logging car, of a Vframe including a pair of'side. sills, a
plurality offbunks each having a top mem-v ber and a b'ottoinmember laid across the tops and bottomsfrespectively vof the side' sills so as to embracethe same and eXtendf y Y v -ing p upon the said beams '/z, (see right hand sills, and means provided at eaoh end of the center and side sills and united to the frame, Y
the said top and bottom plates extending substantially beyond the side sills kon each side, and the top plates providing asupport above the level of the frame to receive logs, side plates to unitetheextending end portions of the top and bottom plates of the bunks, and stanehions pivoted at -tliese end portions toretainthe logs.
3. The combination to form a logging oar, of a frame including` a pair orn side sills, a plurality of bunks each having a top mem- Cropesof this patent may be obtained for ber and a bottom member laid across the ps and bottoms respectively of the side sills so as to embrace the same and eXtend- 'ingV beyond the side sills, the said top members providinga support above the level of the frame to receive logs, a pair oi rails supported on the frame directly above the respective side sills, means to unite the top and bottom members of the bunks both Within and beyond the side sills, and stanchions at the ends-0f the bunks to retain the logs.
In testimony Whereoil have signed my naine to this speciication, in the presence of tvvo subscribing Witnesses.
