Be it lnoWn that'I, HOMER YoHo, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing `at Lore City, It. I?. D. 2, in the county of Guernsey and State of (lhio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Stove-Lid Iiifters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to stove lid lifters; and it has for its primary object the provision of a device of this character which may be quickly adjusted to the lids or disconnected therefronias the occasion may demand and which may be so constructed as to positively prevent the falling of the lid as it is lifted from one place to another.
`W ith the above and other objects in View, the invention consists of certain novel fea'- tures ofconstruction, combination and arrangement of parts, as Will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawingsr-Figure 1 is a section through a portion of the lid, showing the application of the invention thereto; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through a portion of the device; Fig. 3 is a section on line 3 3 of Fig. 2; and Fig. l is a side view of the device, showing a slightly modified form thereof.
T he lifter comprises a handle 1 provided with a grip 2 and longitudinally curved substantially superposed portions or branches 3 and el, which are connected With each other by a guide lug 5 having a passage 6 therein for a purpose to be hereinafter explained. The branch 4 of the handle is provided with a shank 7 having a lug 8, the latter having a passage 9 therein of a rectangular form in transverse section as shown in Fig. 3. The shank is provided with a foot piece or hook 10, which is curved so as to accommodate itself in the recess 11 of the lid 12 and to terminally engage beneath the shoulder 13 of the recess. The said foot piece or hook 10 has an integral offset 14;, which is adaptu ed to engage against the upper surface of the lid at a point adjacent to the recess 11 and to thereby permit the device to be connected with the lid with the maximum security.
In order to positively prevent the lid from falling from the hook, I provide a locking member in the form of a rod 15 having a portion extended into the space between the branches 3 and l of the handle and provided vvith a circular finger grip 16, which is located at such point in advance of the STOVE-LID LIFTER.

V Application filed. March 2.4L, 1914. Serial No. 825,842.
grip 2 that when the latter is grasped by the hand one of the fingers of the hand may be engaged in the grip 1G. The rod is freely slidable in the passage 6 of the lug 5 and at a point in advance of the said lug the rod is provided with a rectangular extension 17, which is slidable in the corresponding passage 9 of the lug S. The extension is provided with a substantially rectangular lug 18, which is normally projected over the free extremity of the hook or foot 10. The extension 17 carries a stop pin 19V and encircling the rod 15 between the stop pin and the lug 5 is a spring 20 and under the action of the latter the said part 18 of the extension 17 is adapted to advance in the direction of the free end of the said hook or foot. The handle l of the lifter may be formed of a single casting, and in practice the grip 2 may be provided with a coiled section 21 which, incident to its formation, is adapted to permit the grip of the handle to remain in a cold condition.
In using the lifter, the grip 2 of the handle is grasped in one hand of the operator and one of the lingers of the hand is extended through the grip 1G of the sliding locking rod 15. Pressure in the direction of the grip 2 is then applied to the grip l, so as to retract the locking end of the rod 15. In other Words, this movement which will be imparted to the rod 15 under the application of the mentioned pull or pressure against the grip 16 will cause the lug 18 to be positioned at a point remote from the free end of the hook or foot 10, andthereby permit the latter to be properly extended into the receiving recess 11 of the lid. After this operation, the grip 16 is released from the linger of the operator and then under the action of the spring of the sliding rod, the latter Will be moved to its normal position and the part 1S Will be projected over the shoulder 13, as clearly seen upon reference to F ig. 1. The shoulder lll of the shank 7 vvill be brought to bear against the upper surface of the lid and the lifter is then connected with the lid in such manner that it will be positively prevented from being casually separated therefrom during the operation of lifting the lids.
In the modied form of the invention shown in Fig. il, the branches 22 and 23 of the handle are connected by a rod 24 and the latter is provided with a grip 25.
On reference to the preferred embodiment of the i-nventionit is preferred to state that;v
the free end of the portion 1 8 of the en! tension 17 is beveled, as at 26,-so that When5- the lifter assumes the angle necessary to its proper connection Wlth the lid, the 'said surface 26 will be freely Vdisposed over the adjacent surface of the lid. It is also pretothshank, a Xed hook at the other end 20 of and arranged obliquely to the shank and spaced guideson the same side of the shank .with the handle, one of said guides being connected to the handle, a locking rod arranged substantially parallel with the shank and slidably mounted for longitudinal movement in the guides so that the outer end of said locking rod may be engaged with or disengaged from the fixed hook and a spring acting to normally move the locking 30 rod to engaged position.
' In testimony whereof I affix my signature 1n presence of two Witnesses.
