GEORGE FISCI-IBUPP, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
BECLININGCHAIRI.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 2%, 1915.
Application filed April 30, 1914. Serial No. 835,370.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Gnonon FISCHRUPP, a citizen of the United States of America. and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reclining- Chairs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of reclining chairs in which the seat and back are pivotally connected to the chair frame, and operatively connected to each other, so that an adjustment of the chair back will effect a corresponding adjustment of the chair seat. And the present improvement has for its object to provide a simple and eflicient structural formation and arrangement of the intermediate connecting mechanism between the seat, back and frame of a chair, whereby the seat and back are connected together in a balanced manner, so as to retain any required adjustment which may be imparted to the parts by the occupant without the requirement of any separate holding or locking means, all as will hereinafter more fully appear.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1, is a sectional elevation of a reclining chair having the present improvement applied. Fig. is a detail elevation partly in section of the intermediate connecting mechanism, and illustrating the normally upright position of the chair back in full lines, and a rearwardly inclined position of the same in dotted lines. Fig. 3, is a detail perspective view of the intermediate connecting mechanism, in a partly detached condition.
Similar reference numerals indicate like parts in the several views.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the stationary chair frame; 2 the chair seat, and 3 the chair back, said parts being of any usual and ordinary form of construction.
4 are a pair of pivot brackets secured to the side members of the chair frame 1, at points midway between the front and rear of said side members.
5 are a companion pair of pivot brackets secured to said side members near the rear end of the same. The said brackets 4 and 5 may be of any ordinary construction and are preferably formed with open sided pivot slots 6 and 7, as shown, to permit of a ready insertion and removal therefrom of the pivot studs of the intermediate mechanism hereinafter described.
8 is the pivotally arranged seat carrying member of the intermediate mechanism above referred to, and which preferably comprises a pair of side bars connected together by transverse front and rear rails 9 into a frame of a rectangular form, as shown. The rear ends of said side bars extend to the rear of the transverse rear rail aforesaid, and are provided with laterally extending and headed pivot studs 10 adapted to engage the rear brackets 5 aforesaid, and form the pivotal connection of the seat carrying member 8 to the chair frame 1.
11 are vertical pivot standards fixed on the seat carrying member 8, a distance in front of the pivot studs 10, above described, with their upper ends pivotally connected to angle brackets 12 attached to the underside of the chair back 3, and which in the present construction constitute the sole means of supporting the chair back in proper position.
The angle brackets 12, above referred to, are formed with depending webs 13 which extend longitudinally and have their forward portions pivotally connected to the aforesaid pivot standards 11, while their rear portions are pivotally connected to the push and pull bars or links 17, hereinafter described.
14 is a pivotally arranged intermediate connecting member between the seat carrying member 8 aforesaid and the chair back 3, and which preferably comprises a pair of side bars connected together by a transverse rear rail 14 into the form of a U- shaped frame as shown. At its midlength said connecting member 14 is provided with laterally extending and headed studs 15, adapted to engage the forward brackets 4, aforesaid, to form the pivotal connection of said connecting member 14 with the chair frame 1. At its forward end said connecting member 14 is pivotally and slidingly connected to the seat carrying member 8 by pivot stud and elongated slot connections 16, while near its rear end said connecting member 14 is pivotally attached to the lower ends of the pull and push bars or links 17, above referred to, and which form the intermediate connections between the lower part of the chair back 3, and said connecting member 14.
18 are a pair of channel bars secured at their front ends to the transverse front rails of the seat carrying member 8, before described, Said channel bars 14 provide a slideway for an ordinary extensible foot rest, such as is usually employed in reclining chairs of the present type.
19 is a hinged flap disposed at the front of the chair frame 1 and adapted to nor mally close the opening through which the foot rest above referred to, is drawn out for practical use.
20 is a spring tending to draw the front of the seat carrying frame toward its normal depressed position.
21 is a spring tending to draw the seat back 3 toward its normally upright position.
Having thus fully described my said invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a chair of the type described, the combination with the chair frame, seat and back, of a seat carrying member pivoted at its rear end to the chair frame and to the lower part of the chair back at a point for Ward of the pivotal connection to the chair frame, and an intermediate member pivoted to the chair frame midway its length and operatively connected at its front end to the seat carrying frame and at its rear end to the lower end of the chair back, substantially as set forth.
2. In a chair of the type described, the combination with the chair frame, seat and back, of a seat carrying member pivoted at its rear end to the chair frame and to the lower part of the chair back at a point forward of the pivotal connection to the chair frame, and an intermediate member pivoted to the chair frame midway its length and operatively connected at its front end to the seat carrying frame and at its rear end to the lower end of the chair back by intermediate links, substantially as set forth.
3. In a chair of the type described, the combination with the chair frame, seat and back, of a seat carrying member pivoted at its rear end to the chair frame and to the lower part of the chair back at a point forward of the pivotal connection to the chair frame, and an intermediate member pivoted to the chair frame midway its length and operatively connected at its front end to the seat carrying frame by lateral stud and elongated slot connections and at its rear end to the lower end of the chair back, substantially as set forth.
4. In a chair of the type described, the combination with the chair frame, seat and back, of a seat carrying member pivoted at its rear end to the chair frame and to the lower part of the chair back at a point forward of the pivotal connection to the chair frame, and an intermediate member pivoted to the chair frame midway its length and operatively connected at its front end to the seat carrying frame by lateral stud and. elongated slot connections and at its rear end to the lower end of the chair back by intermediate links. substantially as set forth.
Signed at Chicago, Illinois, this 25th day of April, 1914.
