UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RAYMOND H. ()LLEY, OF SYRACUSE, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO CROUSE-HINDS COMPANY, OF SYRACUSE, NEW YORK, A CORIORATION OF NEW YORK.
BINDING DEVICE FOR PANEL-BOARDS.
Application filed November 30, 1914.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RAYMOND H. OLLEY,
' of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Binding Device for Panel-Boards. of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to panel boards and has for its object a terminal construction or binding device therefor, which is particularly simple and economical in manufacture and highly eflicient and durable in use; and the invention consists in. the
combinations and constructions hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In describgng this invention, reference 18 had tothe accompanying drawings in which like characters designate corresponding parts in all. the views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of this ter mina'l or binding device for panel boards,
the contiguous portions of the panel board being also shown; Fig. 2 is a vertical sectionalview of parts seen in Fig. 1. Figs. 3, 4c and 5 are perspective views of the sleeves of insulation formin part of this binding device. Figs. 6 and% are modified forms of the intermediate sleeve.
1 designates the base of the panel board, which for convenience is considered as in horizontal position.
2 is one of the conducting bars of the panel board.
' The terminal or binding device comprises a post including a support, a plurality of spacing rings 3 arranged one above the other on the support and adapted to receive a connecting member, as 4, between them, a sleeve 5 of insulation inclosing the lowermost spacing ring 3, an intermediate sleeve 6' inclosing the intermediate spacing rings,
' .that is, all the spacing rings except the v lowermost 3 and the topmo. 3 and a third of 'the post includes, said screw 8, a second screw 9 extending through the base of the panel board from the underside thereof,
andthieading into said lowermost ring 3,
I and a block or sleeve 10 upon which the sleeve '5'and ring 3 rest, the screw 9 extending axially through the sleeve 10.
Specification of Letters Patent.

of is offset from the base and lies in a dew pression 11 in the upper end of the block 11, and the lowermost ring 3 contacts with the end 11 of the bar 2.
Suitable set screws 12, 13, hold the screws 8, 9, from turning relatively to the lowermost spacing ring 3 and usually the sleeve 5 is provided with a work hole 14: through which the set screw 12 is readily accessible for the purpose of removing the screw 8 and parts mounted. thereon.
The sleeve 5 terminates short'of the upper end face'of the lowermost sleeve 3; the top sleeve 7 is formed with a cutout 15 in its lower edge exposing the edge of the lowerend face of the topmost spacing ring 3*; and the intermediate sleeve 6 terminates short of the upper end of the second spacing ring 3 from the top and is formed with a transverse slot or slots 16 arranged to expose the edges of the'abutting end faces of the intermediate rings 3 which are in closed by said sleeve 6. The intermediate sleeve 6 is also formed with a cutout 17 in its lower face arranged to expose the edge of the lower end face of the spacing ring contiguous to the lowermost ring 3. GW- ing to the slots 16 and the cutouts 15 and 17, the edges of the abutting end faces of the rings are exposed so that they are accessihle to the connecting member 4 which is insertible between any two of the spacing rings. The intermediate sleeve may have one or more slots therein, as shown in Figs.
4, 6 and 7.
The spacing rings 3 are limited in their separating movement to a distance equal to the width or thickness of the connecting member 4:, by means of a nut 18 screwing on the upper end of the screw 8 against the uppermost spacing ring 3", the nut having an insulating handle or knob fixed thereto, and the outward movement of the nut is limited by a suitable bur or head 20 on the screw 8.
The sleeves 6 and 7 are connected together sothat the turningof the top sleeve 7 is transmitted to the sleeve 6, and as here shown, the intermediate sleeve 6 is formed with a mortise 21 at it upper end opposite to the side in which the slots 16 are formed:
and the topmost sleeve 7 is formed with atenon 523 beingcomplenr 1 M of the li'l'tQllIlECllfiilE is a brace member oronn pane board striiict said membe l 1 a suitable opening through which. 'LllG sleeve 4 extends, and the sleeve being provided with head or flange lapping the upper face of the-brace by'means of wl'iloh. head he sleeves G, '7 may be turned to bring the l6 and spaces the sleeves so that they face a of mate: he e on one side of the post, or anoth r s' on the oppo site side ol the post.
This terminal or binding device is particularly, applicable for use in metering panel boards having meter bars rranged one above the other, as wil be understood by those skilled in the art, and the trans-- verse slots 16 and spaces between the sleeves 5, a le 6, 7, are alined with the meter bars,
In operation, the connecting member engaged with one meter bar and can be in sorted through the alined slot 16,01" space between the sleeves 5, or (3, '7, and between two of the spacing rings providing no other coni'iecting member is inserted between two other. of the spacingmeans.
'lhis binding device is particularly advantageous in that it is economical in construction, as itdoes not require as expensive tools or dies to manufacture the same as the binding devices in which the intermediate sleeves are composed of several parts.
