Specification of Letters atent.
Application filed Gctober 31, 1214. Serial No. 869,509.
tion is to afford access to the fixture and its accessories without the removal of the surrounding globe or parts carried thereby so that an attendant can readily eect repairs, renewals and adjustments without interference from wind or storm and without being required to descend from the lamp.
Other objects of the inventionV will appear from the following description which will be made in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part hereof and in which"- Figure 1 is a side view of a lamp or light embodying features of the invention and showing parts broken away. Fig. 2, is a side view taken at right angles to Fig. 1 and showing a part of the lamp illustrated in Fig. 1 with the detachable bowl section removed. Fig. 3, is a sectional view taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4C, is a perspective view showing a part of the bowl.
In the drawings 1 is the socket which is customarily mounted on top of a suitable post and through which the riser pipe 2 passes. 8, are screws for centering the riser pipe. 4 is the fixture which includes in the present instance, mantles 5 and a gas valve 6. 7 is a globeand it carries a ventilator 8 which may be variously ornamented, although the ornaments are omitted in the drawings. Generally speaking these parts are well understood and are commonly employed in certain types or styles of so-called street lamps or lights.
There is a sectional bowl of which one section 9 is provided with a globe ring 10 and with a supporting base 11 and with a torch opening 12 having a suitable pivotal cover 13. The globe 7 is carried by the globe ring 10 and the supporting base is shown as mounted on the socket 1 and secured in place by means of screws 111, thus the globe ring and the cover 13 are carried by and constitute in effect a permanent part of the socket 1. The detachable section 15 is pro' vided with a guide base 16 and with marginal guide flanges 17, adapted to enter the bowl section 9. rEhe detachable bowl section 15 can be applied to the rest of the described structure so as to form a complete bowl and can be removed therefrom without disturbing the globe 7, the parts which it carries and any other parts of the lamp or light. There are catches for connecting and disconnecting the globe sections. As shown the hook elements 1S are secured to the bowl section 15 and the abutment elements 19 are secured to the bowl section 9. Q0 is a pin radially movable through the bowl section 9 and adapted to operate upon a prolongation 21 of one of the hook elements 19, The detachable bowl section 15 can be placed upon the socket with its guide base 16 on top thereof and then pushed toward the bowl section 9, with the result that the catches 1S and 19 automatically engage and so hold the parts firmly to place with the marginal flanges 17 inside of the bowl section 9. The detachable bowl section can be readily removed by pushing the pin 20 which releases one of the catches with the result that the other is freed.
21 is a tether connection between the detachable bowl section 15 and the rest of the structure. lt is shown to consist of a chain having its respective ends connected with an eye 22 fast to the bowl section 15 and an eye 23 fast to the socket.
2st are air holes at the base of the bowl.
lt is evident that the parts, when assembled, are held to place and present a neat and attractive appearance and by the described combination it is possible for the attendant, who is usually upon a ladder, to push the pin 2O and so detach the removable bowl section 15 which can be permitted to remain at the end of its tether 21. Thus the hands of the attendant are free and by putting his hands through the opening left by he removal of the bowl section 15 he can make any renewals, repairs or adjustments necessary in respect to the fixture. This he can do` while the globe is in place and even though there be wind or storm. To illustrate the advantage of the described mode of operation there may be contrasted with it what would happen if it were necessary for the attendant to remove the globe and its ventilator. The attendant would have to go up the ladder, remove the globe and ventilator and carry them down to the ground. I-Ie would then have to go up the ladder and make the repairs, adjustments or renewals required by the fixture while the latter was exposed to wind and storm. In the case of mantles, their renewals under such circumstances is extremely diflicult. The attendant would then have to come down the ladder, get the globe, carry it up the ladder and put it in place; meanwhile the mantles would be exposed to the wind or storm.
It may be remarked that the door 13 is carried by the fixed globe section, so that the attendant in opening it with his torch in no way tends to disturb the detachable bowl section.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art to'whieh my invention relates that modiications may be made in details of construction and arrangement, hence the invention is not limited as to those matters or in any way further than the prior state of the art and the appended claims may require.
W'hat I claim is:
l. In a lamp the combination of a socket, a fixture mounted thereon, a bowl section rigidly mounted on the socket and provided with a globe support, a globe on the support,
a removable bowl section provided with a guide plate adapted to seat on top of the f.,
catches from the outside, and a tether connection for the removable bowl section, whereby the opening in the lixed bowl seotion may be entirely clear of the removable section.
2. In a lamp the combination of a socket, a fixture mounted thereon, a bowl section iixedly mounted on the socket and provided with a globe support, a globe on the support, a removable bowl section detachable as a whole from the other bowl Section, and a tether connection for the removable bowl section, whereby the opening in the fixed bowl section ymay be entirely clear of the removable section, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
