SHARPENING DEVICE.
To all whom it may concern Be it known'that we, EDWARD A. CHRIS- Torn and EDWARD T. Montana, citizens of the United States, residing at Chica o, in the county of Cook and State of Il inois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement'in Sharpening Devices, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
Our invention relates to means for sharpening knives, scissors, etc., and has for 1ts object the provision of a household article which may readily be used by an inexperienced person and which operates effectively to secure the desired results.
Our invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view thereof, showing the application of a knife thereto; Fig. 2 is an end elevational view thereof; Fig. 3 is an elevational view of the other side; Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on the plane of the line 4-4 of Fig. 1 and looklng in the direction indicated by the arrows; and Fig. 5 is a detail view of a sprlng device which we shall refer to.
The abrasive parts of the sharpener of our invention comprise two elements in the shape of wheels 6 and 7 of emery, carborundum, or some other abrasive material. The inner face of the wheel 7 is dished, as illustrated in Fig. 4, and the inner face of the wheel 6 fits in and cooperates with this dished face ofthe wheel 7, as clearly shown in Fig. 4. The inner face of the wheel 7 is also beveled outwardly at 8, so as to form a V-sha ed groove 9 between the two members. he two wheels 6 and 7 are mounted upon a screwshaft 10, the wheel 6 directly and the wheel 7 through the intervention of an eyelet 11, which secures a ratchet-wheel 12 to the outer face thereof. The screwshaft is mounted in the two limbs of the U-shaped handle 13, and a nut 14 en ages the outer end of the screw so as to 0 amp the arrangement together. A cup springwasher 15 which, as illustrated in Fig. 5, is provided with radial slots 16, is slip ed over the screw 10 between the outer ace of thewheel 6 and the adjacent limb of the handle 13, as illustrated in the drawings, in order to maintain the proper bearing contact between the two abrasive elements. It will be evident that the wheel 7 may turn in the direction of the arrow X (Fig. l), but not in the o posite direction. The blade of a knife is orced down into the groove 9 and it will be seen that there will always be a tension forcing the two faces of the groove together against the sides of the knife-blade. The knife is inserted between the two limbs of the U- sha ed handle from the left (Fi 1) and it wil be seen that in moving the linife to the right the wheel 7 will be moved therewith, the wheel 6 also moving therewith by reason of its engagement witi the knife and with the wheel 7. We may say here that if the two wheels are not separated by the knifeblade the connection between the two is similar to that of a cone clutch. When they are separated there is still a connection, by way of the knife-blade on one side and direct on the other. In drawing the knife in the opposite direction, however, the wheels remain stationary and the proper abrasive effect of the wheels upon the knifeblade is secured. The sharpenin of the knife is thus secured by setting t e knife in the groove 9, pressing downwardly thereon to the proper extent, and moving the bladde forwardly and back as rapidly as desire We provide in the U-shaped handle 13 two sets of slots 19, 19 and 20, 20. Each set is adapted for the reception of a scissorsblade, in the manner illustrated in dotted lines in Fig. 3, the blade to be sharpened by moving it back and forth in the iiding slots so that its face may rub against the surface of the wheels 6 and 7. It will be clear that with such an engagement the scissors will be hollow-ground and that either of the sets of slots will be equally efiicient to this end. In this way the structure may be used for the double purpose of grinding by means of the groove between the two wheels, and also by means of the periphery of the wheels, without in any way adding to the complexity of the structure. It will appear, furthermore, that the structure which we provide is one of simple design and a minimum number of' arts, it being a parent that the metallic parts may all lie readily constructed by punch-press eratlon, except for the bolt which is emp eyed and which i's'standard.
We claim:
1. "In a knife sharpener, a handle, a rota table grinding element, having a peripheral cnttim oove therein and adapted to be rotate y the reciprocatingapplication thereto of the article to be sharpened, and means for permitting-movem n f a d ement in, one direction, but preventing movement in the o posite direction.
2. In a kni e sharpener, a handle, a pair of rotary grinding wheels having a cutting roove therehetween, said rindmg wheels eing adapted to he rotate by the reciprocating application thereto of the article to be sharpened, and means for permitting movement of said grinding whee s inone direction but preventing movement in the opposite direction.
3. In a knife sharpener, a handle, a rotary grinding wheel having a dished center and a beveled edge on one face. another grind- 26 ing wheel'having a face fitting into said dished center, and means for permitting movement of said grinding wheels in one direction but preventing movement in the opposite direction.
