ARE. SF MOLDING: STEEL OAS'EITNGS.
Rio Drawing.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Lucas 0. DAVIS a citizen of the United States, and resident of Hinsdale, in the county ofDupage and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Art of Molding Steel Castings, of Which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the art of casting and has particular reference to a novel method of hardening or modifying the face of steel castings.
I am aware that it is a common practice after a mold has been formed to apply a coating or wash to the face thereof, such coating or Wash consisting of a carbon-containing mineral, sand and a binder. This practice has been followed inmoldlng steel castings but the resulting product, while having the required hardened exterior, is
unsightly and altogether too rough for ordinary use. This condition arose from the combustion of the carbon element thus giving o'li a gas which in its escape prevented the metal from lying naturally against the face of the mold.
I have conceived of a method of casting whereby I am enabled to secure the desired results as to exterior hardness and at the same time produce a casting which is smooth and sightly. A satisfactory substance is found to be a mixture of a carbonaceous material such as 80% form-manganese, silica moiding sand and linseed oil, the elements being combined in substantially the follouw ing proportions: lbs. term-manganese, lb. molding sand, g, pint linseed oil. These materials when thoroughly mixed form a plastic'substance which I apply to.
the pattern. in the mold; this is covered with the ordinary backing sand and the entire,

mold is then rammed with sand in the al manner after which tin.- pattern is drawn and the mold dried as in ordinary dry sand mold practice. After the metal is cast in a mold, such as described, the carbons. ceous material i probably ignited as heretofore but the use of the silica. molding sand serves to create voidsor interstices for the escape of the gases with the result that the face of the casting"is smooth.
The exact proportions set forth are not requisite and may be varied to a. certain ere tent in order to carry out the method here disclosed.
It Will be understood that the linseed oil acts solely as a binder and that only such quantity need be used as is necessary to bind the particles of sand and carbonaceous material together and retain the imprint of the pattern after the rcinoya mold.
I claim: I 1. The method of preparing molds Wl'llfihconsists in the form of a compound con hereof from the taining carbonaceous material, molding sand.
c'rrecfion in' Letters Patent No 1,265,651.
I It is hereby certified that in Lettem Patent N 0. l,165,651,gra11 tod December 28, 1515, ilpon th'copplicafion of James G. Davis, of Hinsdalc, Illinois, for an impfovo- 'ment in The Art; of Molding Steel Castings, an verror appears in the printed spcification requiring correction as follows: Claim 1 line 2, (line 65 of pagc,) for the word form recdforming; and that the said iletiers Patent chould be read with this correction thereinlhat the some may conform to tho record of the case in'the Patent Oifice.
Signed and sealed this 18th day of January, A1 D., 1916.
