' SANITARY sHAvINo-BRUSH- To all 'whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, PHILIP J. DE LEEUW, a citizen of the United States, and-a resident of New York, borough ofBrooklyn, county of Kings, and lState of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improve- -Brushes, of which the followingl is a full, clear, and exact specification. I
-This invention relates to a class of de# vices adapted for use when a person is being shaved.' y
"In accordance withpresent practice it is customary to apply lather uponthe face when a person is bein shaved bythe use of la. brush made of air, and in barber shops,- or li-ke public places the saine piece of soap and the same brush are used for lathering various persons. It is well known that both the'soap and brushes of this class are susceptible ofretaining the germs of disease, and by the useof these articles in this man'- ner it is practically impossible to maintain perfectsanitary conditions wherebyinfections diseases may be prevented lfrom being transmitted from one yersonv to another. My invention has or its object to overcome these objections by providing a shaving brush of a form designed to be dispensed with after being used for lathering shaved, and wherein 'ls` employeda. pad, or dauber havin a cov'- ermg, or ,casing of intersticed-v ieXib e material, such as antiseptic gauze, or cheese cloth, or similar woven fabric. Interiorly of the covering is a filling of sponge, or other like absorbing material which is charged with powdered soap so that when the pad is immersed in Water the sponge will take-up a required quantity for'con-y verting the soap t'o a latherwhichis-applied to the person by manipulating the pad in a similar manner to usin anpordinary shaving brush, thereby ena ling persons to be shaved in barber shops, and like' 'public infected with disease.
A further 'object' o f the invention is to provide a sanitary simple and inexpensiveconstruction as will warrant being ldestroyed after once used,
and whichl is of a form adaptedto be' conveniently utilized 'Apractical embodiment ofthe invention is represented inthe accompanying drawing Specification of Letters Patent.
invention. Fig. 2 is a section, partly-in sponge are i employed in the the powdered soap 4 ciency thereof as will be required for shavdanger of being shavingbrush of such a Patented Dec.' 28, 1915.

forming a part of this speciiication in which slmllar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, the said inventlon being more fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out inthe appended claims.
In the drawing,
Figure 1 is an elevation of one form (if shaving brush embodying my detail, taken vertically throughl the brush, and Fig. 3 is a, section, partly in detail, of a slightly different form'of the lathering pad of the brush.
The. shaving brush has a pad, or dauber 1 0 whlch may be of any suitable shape and slze to adapt it to serve for distributing lather upon theface of a person in a manner similar to brush. The pad, or dauber l0 is composed of a covering, creasing 11 of intersticed iexible material, such as cheese cloth, antiseptic gauze, or like woven fabric adapted to permit water, or a lather made of soap and water to freely pass therethrough, and s aid casing is formed so as to be substantially pear-shaped, having an annular iange 12 projecting' upwardly from the top portion thereof.
Interiorly of the flexible casing 11 yis a or a single piece of spon e, as 14 Fi 3 may be used instead. Whegn small piecegs of casing 11 they are loosely arranged therein, and interspersed between the pieces of the sponge is a suitable quantityof powdered soap, as 15, any well-known, or preferred make the use of an ordinary shaving adapted to producea lather when mingled with water. When a single piece of sponge is used in the casing 11 I' prefer pocket, as 16, in the upper part thereof, and in said pocket is placed a desired quantity of preferably 'only a su'iing one person. v
In order. to permit this form of shaving brush to be employed in a manner slmllar to `us1ng the usual brush of this class as well as permitting-it to be used with equal eilito provide a c1ency,:1nserted in the annular Hange 12 of thecasm handle 1 may be formed in a plain, or fanciful shape, and may^ be made ofv-wood, or `a yroll of cardboard, or paper, or any 11 isone end of a handle 17 .The
B the use of I `or the like around the annular ange 12'the l flexible pad yso lclaim as 'new and desire or dauber .will be secured against removal from the handle 17, thereby preventin the pad from bein re-charged with pow ered soap, and compe ling its further use to be dispensed with. y. In practice the brush is designed for immersing the pad 10 in water so that the filling will absorb a required quantity thereof which will be thoroughly'mingled with the powdered soap in the pad when applied to a persons face -by the brush being manipulated ina manner similar to using an ordinary shaving brush. A lather of proper consistency will then be produced so that the process of, shaving tually completed with facility without risking the danger of being infected with disease. vIn the foregoing description, I have embodied the vpreferred form of my invention, but I do not wish to be understood asl limiting myself, thereto, as I am aware that modifications may ybe made therein without departing from the principle, or sa'cricingl any of the advantages of this invention, self the right to make such changes as Having thus described my invention, I
to Vsecure by Letbrush o'f the character dewithin said casing resilient bulb symmetrically arranged on the person may be eecairly fall 'within the scope of the appended claims.
lcular cross section, a fabric casing secured to said handle, a fillingA of pieces of sponge a diameter larger than the 'diameter of.v the inner end of said handle, said pieces of sponge being capable .of slight movement with relation to each other, and a charge of soap within said casing, the soap being interspersed between. the' pieces of sponge.
2. A shaving brush of the character described, comprlsing a substantially straight stiff handle, a casing of gauze secured to one end of said handle to orrn a bag, a`iller of resilient pieces of absorbent material entirelv filling said bag to form an absorbelit t e end of saidhandle and having an over-all diameter larger than the diameter of the said handle and capable of sustaining pres;
-sure brought against said handle tending to flatten the bulb, andfparticles of powdered soap interspersed between saidpieces of ab 'sorbent material.
3. A sanitary shaving vbrush comprising in combination a handle2 a fabric caslng permanently secured to sald handle, a spongy filling for said lcas'ng, and soapy material associated with said filling in only suicient q'uantityfor a single shave.
This specification signed and witnessed this twenty secondday of July, A. D. 1913. PHILIPJ.l DE LEEUW.
