2 SHEETS-SHEET 2 l/VVETOR George 5. TiHofso WIT/V5885 1 i a l w ommg 0 m and they are "Specification Letters Patent.
A GnonenlSffTmpo'rson, a citizen of 'the United States, anda resident. of Tiffin, county of Seneca State-of Ohio, have invented anew and improved Table, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. v My invention relates parti cularly to tables capable of being tilted, and to beturned, and is especially intended for the use of clerks, accountants, and -others requiring a large number of papers or books convenient-of access.
: Be itkn t rovide an improved means to tiltably sup port the table and positively hold it at the desired angle, and to provide for the convenient vertical adjustment of the table, as well as for revolving the table or securing it against turning movement.
The invention will be particularly explained in the specific description following. Reference is had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specificatlon,
in which similar characters of reference 1ndicate corresponding parts in all the views,
and in which: I
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a table embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a fragmentary vertical section on the line 2-2 Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a partial side elevation at right angles to Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a fragmentary side view with parts in section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3; and Fig. 5 is a detail horizon tal section on the line 5-5, Fig. 1.
In constructing a practical embodiment of my invention in accordance with the illustrated example, a column 10 is provided and is hollow, or at least hollow at its upper portion. Pivotally supported in the upper end of the column 10 is a socket 11. Means for pivotally supporting the socket 11 may consist of adjustable screws 12 extending into the column 10 near the top, and constituting at their inner ends oppositely disposed pivot centers for the socket. The pivot screws may be adjusted or removed, held in adjusted position by lock nuts 13.
A table is provided which may consistof a single top 14 or a plurality of tops, one above the other, there being shown in the present example a main table top 14 and a second smaller table top 15 supported above. the first table top by a spindle 16. The top 14 is supported on a standard 17 which is epped' the. tiltable socket 1 1, to tilt with The standard 17 is adjustable vertically in the socket and is adapted to be turned therein. for revolving thetable. The
the. latter.
lower end of the spindle 17 rests on the upper end of a vertical screw 18 which extendsthrough the bottom of the socket 11, hand wheel 17 for convenient access to.
and is providedwith a turning it. To afford the handle wheel 19 a side door 20 is provided in the column 10.
In order to tilt the socket 11 and thetable a supported therein. actuating means are pro-'- The prime ob ect of the 1nvent1on11s. 130....
vided,.for which purpose a bracket 21 on the column 10 is formed with bearings 22 in which a horizontal screw 23 is mounted to turn, the screw being provided with a hand wheel 24, or the like, for turning the.
same. A nut 25 is adapted to travel on the screw 23 in response to the turning of the 'latter, and a link 26 extends obliquely from screw 23 may be turned to the right or leftto cause the nut to travel on the screw, in response to which movement the link 26 Patented Dec. 21,1915.
will rock the socket 11 on its pivots, thereby tilting the table standard 17 and the table top or tops at an angle, or disposing the table top or tops in a level position. Moreover, the described actuating devices serve to firmly sustain the table in the adjusted position.
The table top and its standard may be revolved, the upper end of the screw 18 constituting a center bearing therefor, but I provide means to hold the table against turning, unless it is desired. The means to hold the table against turning comprises a split collar 28 supported on the upper end of the socket-11 and embracing the standard 17. At the split are formed one of which is threaded to receive the forwardly threaded end of a clamp spindle 30, the spindle extending freely through the other of said lugs and being shouldered at the outside of the latter lug. The spindle 30 has a hand wheel 31 or the like for turning the spindle. The spindle 30 turns in a bearing formed by a vertical lug 32 integral with the socket 11.
A rigid collar or enlargement33 on the of the collar 28 ears 29 ters hollow column,
spindle is disposed adjacent to the lug 32. The turning of the spindle serves to tighten orloosen the collar 28 on the standard 17 whereby to prevent the turning of the latter; in'the revolving of the table or to hold the same against turning. i 4
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let- Patent, is: V 1. An article of furniture comprising a a socket extendinginto the upper. end of the column and-tiltable there- -1n,'m eans-for tilting'the socket and holdingscrew turnable in it in adjusted position, a table having a standard turnable in the socket and verticallyadju'stable therein, and an adjustable the bottom of the socket, the upper end of the screw forming a center bearing for the lower end'of the table standard. a
Copies of this patent iinay be obtained for 2. An article of furniture'comprising a column, a socket pivotally supportedin the upper end of the standard to be tilted therein and formed with a lateral arm, a table having a, standard fitting said socket, a
- bracket onthe column at the exterior below the lateral arm of the socket, a transverse" screw revolubly'supported on the bracket, av
nut mounted to travel on said screw, and an obliquely disposed link pivotally connected at its lower end withthe said nuta'nd pivotally'connected at its upper end with the-- lateral arm ofthe socket.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in thepresence' of two subscribing witnesses.
